Little lost kitten and irresponsible owner |
|
On Thursday, when I was walking home from school with my daughter, we cut across the college car park to get home more quickly. In the car park we saw a small kitten with no collar, sniffing around the bins and drinking from a muddy puddle. We stopped to pet him, and then went on our way - followed by the kitten, who decided my 4 year old would make a great playmate! I couldn't just shut the door in his face after he had followed us all the way to our house, so I let him in, fed him, and kept him overnight (it was cold, there were fireworks, and I didn't know if he would find his way home - or even if he had a home to go to).
The next morning I called round the animal charities and vets to see if he had been reported missing, but he hadn't. I took him to the vet to check for a microchip, though I suspected there wouldn't be one as he hadn't got a collar and hadn't been neutered. No microchip, and he's only around 5 months. Really, he shouldn't be out. He obviously hasn't had his injections, isn't even registered with a vet. Still, I put up posters on Friday in case the owner was looking, and on Saturday evening, I received a phone call from a young woman who said he was hers. She was very abrupt with me, just "you found a kitten, yeah? He's mine, where do you live, I want to pick him up".
I gave her the address, she drove round, but sent her father to the door and didn't even get out to check it was the right kitten - she wouldn't have been able to see from where she was parked. Her father called over "is this it?" and she nodded without looking. Then the father walked back to the car with the kitten, put him in the back - no cat carrier - and they drove away without even a thankyou! Well, I thought that was very rude as I'd been feeding him for more than 48 hours and keeping him safe, and I was a bit worried as I'm not sure he will be taken good care of, but he isn't mine, so I had to let it go. But this evening, another lady who lives nearby called me to ask if I'd returned the kitten - then told me she had seen him wandering around in the cold at midnight last night.
It worries me that this kitten doesn't seem to have a very caring owner... and now I'm wondering if she really was the owner at all.

caragh2608 (1017) | 4 weeks ago | My cats were unusually accepting of him and Diego even ran out and watched the car go when he saw them taking the kitten. If he somehow finds his way back here, I don't feel inclined to report him next time, I'll just adopt him!

caragh2608 (1017) | 4 weeks ago | I've made a deal with my daughter. If we see him on the way to or from school, still with no collar and still not castrated, we won't discourage him from following us again, and if he does, next time we will keep him. She's hoping we find him again!

3. jugsjugs (3192) | 4 weeks ago | Well i would also be worried about the kitten as well.I think maybe the person who came to collect the cat is one of those people who do not want the kitten and yet do not want anyone else to have the kitten as well. You could put posters up asking who the owner is of the kitten as well as see if you spot the kitten out and about.

caragh2608 (1017) | 4 weeks ago | If I see him again I might hold onto him and make the owner come find him again - I can get her details that way and report her to the RSPCA if I feel its appropriate

jugsjugs (3192) | 4 weeks ago | I have 6 cats one that is 20 and i had children out here the other night trying to take her, thankfully i saw them and told them to put her down,if they had taken her she would never had found her way home. She looks like a kitten as well as sometime times have those mad moments so perhaps they thought that she was a lost kitten.I also have a black cat who has recently been castrated and he came in the other night with a collar on which none of my cats wear a collar.I can see why some cats do get lost with people taking them,so perhaps she was not the owner to begin with and the cat was trying to find its proper owner.Oh yes i did take the collar off my cat.My friend also lost her cat and saw it in a womans window wearing a pink collar she soon got that back as it came home with no collar.

4. LadyMarissa (2691) | 4 weeks ago | I DESPISE PEOPLE LIKE THAT!!! There's not much you can do. Since your neighbor has seen that poor baby again, I do believe I'd walk home the same way again...keeping my eyes open for him. If I found him once again, I'd pick him up & take him home with me & NOT report him as found again. My daughter would have a loving playmate!!! My thinking....he may have slipped out once, but I doubt if he'd do it twice. From what you're saying, she's NOT much of an owner!!! I hope you find him & give him a good home!!!

5. dracoserpintenes (254) | 4 weeks ago | i have had experiences finding cats on the side of the road at a young age but both of them were in such bad shape that i just took them in and made sure that they lived as the owners obviously didn't care if there had ever been any. they were both really people friendly so i think there had. but if that woman hadn't come to the door i would never have let her have him until i spoke to her in person and i definitely agree if you find him again don't give him back she obviously doesn't give a rats patootie for the cute little fuzzball. my cats run around outside without collars but we live out in the woods so they don't venture out to the road because the yard is big enough for them to live in and enjoy life.

6. dorannmwin (1948) | 4 weeks ago | That is so sad for the little kitten. We've always been pet lovers and pet owners, but none of our dogs are microchipped. They stay inside all the time so I really didn't see the point in them. We've also been the family that will let a stray into our yard while we try to find the owner. Whenever we've done this, if people call us to say it is their dog, we will ask them to describe the dog so that it doesn't end up in the wrong hands. I can't say that I've always been a big cat lover, but we are considering adding one to our family as soon as we find the right cat for us.

7. sweetgirl_k1 (3146) | 4 weeks ago | It doesn't sound like she was the owner of that kitten. She probably just wanted a free kitten and thought that was the easy way to get one. I hope the kitten that lady saw last night was not the same kitten that you had released to those people. If so, that is really sad. Have you walked back through there again to see if you could see it anywhere?

8. weasel81 (1168) | 4 weeks ago | it's times like this when you feel sorry for animals, when people think their cute while their young and then dump them later on. we've made feral cats pets over the yrs, my cat even lives at my mums cause she'll get killed if she lived with me, cause of the boss's dogs (one will chase to kill)

10. earth2jacq (906) | 4 weeks ago | Firstly I would say that you have such a kind heart to nourish and let the kitten in your home even if it is not yours.
Last year I also adopted a stray kitten. It was crying in the grass and I was worried that a snake might come and eat it. So I decided to take the kitten home (by the way she likes hotdogs). No one claimed her though I have informed our community about the lost kitten and that the owner can pick her up in my place but alas no owner came. I am happy to have adopted that kitten unfortunately she got lost again and I couldn't find her.
For the kitten you found I hope that next time you come across it I hope you could find it in your heart to keep it for keeps as the owner just let the kitten stray and seems to not realize that her kitten was lost again. I could just imagine how she treats the kitten in her home. Maybe the reason why the kitten keeps running away is because she is an abused kitty and is trying to look for a loving home.
