Being born in the year 1965, you get to experience a lot of things in the last 40 years or so. The first man on the moon, the assasinations of Martin Luther King, Woodstock, etc. Even the emergence of Beatlemania. The only thing still around today is the music: Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Janis Joplin. Though they have passed on as people, their words and music will live on for a long time to come. That's is why the oldies are so important to me, it never goes out of style. Even radio stations of today are still playing them. People still remember most hits, and can even remember the lyrics verbatim. Simple things you can still pass on from generation to generation. Is there a particular oldies tune that still has your toes tapping. Is there a favorite band from that era which you may still have an lp floating around your house somewhere? Feel free to open your time capsule, and let the fun begin.

I have an electic taste in music. I was born in the 80s but I do listen to the artists that you've listed. In fact, I even listen to Ray Charles, Sinatra, Tony Bennett and other oldies.

I love music so there are a lot of songs that make me go tappin'. Personally, I sort of like the old music compared with what we have today. I find today's music to be forgettable because they usually sound alike. Back in the older days, the music sounded more "raw".

I know what you mean. Usually if a current artist is touring, I simply ignore it. Yet, when I hear if a motown artist, or a band with great vocal harmonies (Simon & Garfunkle, Frankie Valli, etc) perform, I am right in there with them. Thanks for your commentthumbup

I feel as you do and I have thought of this alot over the last few years. I was born in the early 50's and was a teenager when Beatlemania started. I remember hearing about Charles Manson and The Family. I went to see Easy Rider when it FIRST came out. I panhandled for the money to go see Alice's Restaurant. I went to the Blues Festival up in the northern portion of my state because that was the closest facsimile to Woodstock. I went to Love Ins at the park. I have so many memories of going over to friend's houses and listening to the new Stones album or the new Doors album. I remember my first concert and my first acid trip and the first of so many other things that I experienced first hand and as it was happening in the world. Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and The Doors were my favorite preformers back then and I recall how I felt when they passed. Light My Fire, Ball and Chain, and Star Spangled Banner were ones I cranked up on the old stereo at Mom's house when she left for alittle while and I was able to turn it up. I remember Summer wasn't Summer without hearing The Hollies, Setting On The Dock Of The Bay by Otis Reding and anything by The Beach Boys. And listening to Wolfman Jack howl on the radio in the wee early hours of the morning at my girlfriend's house. And Mamas and The Papas on television and Laugh-In and Mod Squad and so many others. I still have Her Majesties .......? mysterious album by The Stones, and some others I don't even recall which ones because I haven't looked in the box for probably close to ten years or more. I feel so fortunate to have lived through that marvelous time while it was happening.

I totally forgot about wolfman Jack. He even had his own radio shows in the 70's and 80's before he died. Ah, at least we still have the music. Thanks for your response celticthumbup

I wasn't alive in the 60's, but my parents and older siblings passed on their love of the older music to me. I, in turn, am passing it on to my children. It is funny, though, because my siblings lived through this era, but their children do not like that sort of music. I learned to like it from my siblings, yet my children embrace that music. Perhaps it is because it is more about the memories and the time spent together listening to the music than being alive during that era.

I was talking about songs from Dr. Hook on another discussion recently. Now, I have found a CD of Jim Croce's greatest hits, and I am really in the mood to listen to them. They bring back wonderful memories. Thanks. thumbup

I like the lyrics of a good folk singer like Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot, John Denver, etc. Where most of the younger generation took that for granted. When music truly meant something. Thanks for your response purple

Geminikid, you have mentioned some really good singer/songwriters here. I like all of the ones that you have said. I really like Billy Joel, too. He has stood the test of time, because he has been around for decades and each generation still responds to his music. These are the type of musicians that we need to keep their music alive.

Oh my gosh, so many good tunes, and memories....I still love to listen to The Doors, Janis, Jimi, The Guess Who, The Mamas & the Papas, The Beatles, The Yardbirds, Iron Butterfly, WAR, The Animals, Country Joe & The Fish, The Kinks, Melanie, Sony & Cher and so many more. And the shows I remember while growing up....Dark Shadows, Gilligan's Island, Dr. Who, Saturday Night Special, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, Laugh In, My Favorite Martian - the list goes on, and on.

Getting back to the music, both my hubby and I passed on our love of that musical era to our daughter; who is now passing it on to her son. Matter of fact, my family and I went to the 40th anniversary Woodstock festival this past summer. We met so many great people, listened to fantastic music and have a wonderful time. Just more great memories to add to the ever growing list.:o)

Woodstock, huh? That must of been a once in a lifetime deal. I think they recently made a comedic movie about that, and it was directed by Ang Lee. So, you see, those decades people thought were lost, are making a comeback in a big wayhappy

donnamc (16)   ranked 60 out of 70 in oldies  3 weeks ago

There's a time for...:o) It does seem as though almost everything makes a comeback, in one way or another.

Going to this years Woodstock festival was incredible...definitely a great memory. I haven't seen the Ang Lee movie yet (Taking Woodstock), but I'd like to.

Hi! I was born in the 80's but I agree that oldies still rocks! I remember my parents playing Beatles music during my childhood. And you're right, their music lives on for a long time! Music artists nowadays even make their own version of those songs but I still prefer listening to the original ones.=)

myLot reputation of 96/100. geminikid (1071)   ranked 4 out of 70 in oldies  3 weeks ago

Sounds like you are a very cultured person. Most people born in te 80's turn up their nose at anything good. They would prefer listening to current works, instead of what is better for them. To me, rap and heavy metal is not even music. Thanks for your commenthappy
