Daughter going vegan

United States

Hi my daughter is 22. She's been a vegetarian for 2 years, but she is trying to go vegan now. It's probably better for her anyway cause dairy makes/made her sick, but there are a few things she's trying to figure out how to do - she wants to still eat sandwiches, but most breads have dairy in them. Is there any vegan breads she can try or a way she can make vegan bread and what about vegan buns for veggie burgers? Thank you.

Hi, I don't know if you have these brands in the US but I'm pretty sure Helga's is vegan and the Baker's Delight stores' bread is vegan too. Have a look in health food shops also. Have you considered making your own? It might be a pain in the butt however it would save you a packet load. Search the internet for vegan bread in your area. There will be a store somewhere that sells it, at the very least an online store.

I too am a vegetarian. Although I make mistakes sometimes I still consider my diet change a tremendous step. I would always get sick from eating dairy products as well. I gave up all Dairy products for good! There is a bread that is better than most breads called Old Timey Bread which is very good. I would suggest getting the wheat kind though. It does not contain any Dairy at all. I hope your dairy continues to be well and make more good decisions.

No matter which bread she choses it should be 100% whole wheat. The following web site has a list of vegan breads as well as other foods. http://www.peta.org/accidentallyVegan/VeganShoppingQS-BakedGoods.asp?Category=Baked%20Goods

I am a vegan and I used to be a vegetarian. I have a book that is sold by the Vegan Society in the UK. It only lists food sold in the UK. I can see which breeds sold in the UK are vegan. I can check ingredients on packets. Some packets say 'suitable for vegetarians and vegans' on them. I think it is wise to take a supplement for Vitamin B12 and Iron. I send away for vitamin pills from the USA which are vegan. Good luck to your daughter.

There are lots of vegan support sites that offer recipes for just about everything. There are also vegan cook books that can help her. I would suggest she consult her physician so that he/she can advise her on any possible supplement needs are particular areas she needs to be careful with. A vegan support group could be a good guide to help her make the change.
