What is the best way to respond to rude people? email this discussion to a friend?

It is interesting to know that different persom would act differently even under the same exact situation.

I was checking in at the airport and since I registered for a self-checkin option where I just needed to go to the kiosk and get my borading pass printed at the machine. However, none of the machine worked and there was no one from the airline there to help.

So, frustratedly, I marched to the counter and queued up for my boarding pass like anybodoy else that morning. It was about 6am and therefore, the I was rather sleepy and now the mood was laready spoilt due to the non-functional machines.

Finally my turn came and I told the girl at the counter that none of the self checkin machine was working. All I expected from her was a simple apology and a simple respond that she would get someone to take a look at those machines or any other stories that she could come up with...

However, what came out from her was this:

"That is not my problem. This is the check in ocunter and what is your booking number?"

That's when I reached my boiling point. I told her that I do not care whether she cares or not since I am the customer and I am making a complain about the services provided by your airline. I also told her that she as an individual is of no importance to me but she as a representative of the airline should behave in a way that would not being seen as damaging in anyway to the reputation of the company...

I knew she heard me loud and clear as she dare not look at me after that...

How would you react under such situation? Somebody even told me that deserved a spit on her face for giving out such answer to a customer.

I can imagine, Beruang. I live n Indonesia, and that kind of thing is not something unusual for me. You can find the same experiences almost every day encountered by lots of people. The Customer Service representatives in many companies in this country is not well trained and rude and that's the way it is. Trust me, you're not alone.

I am pretty sure that if you're not in a bad mood you're not going to blow up like that. And, I think I know what airlines you're talking about. Though, what you did was right, you're just asking for what you're deserved to have, but it would only wasting your breath because they would never change their attitude towards other customers. After you heard my story, I believe you would feel so much better, Beruang.

Months ago, me and my partner were going home from working and we needed to put our money to our account so we can do the transaction tomorrow. It was late at night and the money we would like to store at the cash storing machine was about five millions IDR. When it was processed, suddenly the system go off and the money stuck in the machine. We called the 24 hours customer service.

They said that they couldn't help us, but we need to wait until tomorrow and that they couldn't tell us whether our money was safe or not, so I asked him, the customer service frustratedly, "So, Sir, we can not leave our money here, what do you think? Do I need to call police officer? Because it seems you couldn't help us here..."

And he answered, "Go ahead and call the cops. So what do you want now? You want me to make the report for technician to get there by tomorrow or not?" with a very arrogant and annoying voices.

So I told him, "OF COURSE YOU SHOULD. That's your job and I was filing a report and don't you dare to talk to me like that. What's your name?" Well, that was a threatening question, asking name of the rude customer service would make her/him think twice of being rude, maybe because they think we know someone and can make them in a big trouble.

"I am so sorry, Miss, but I was just asking and..." well I cut his words and again, asking for his name. That was when he suddenly had an answer for my question, "When our machine is shut down, miss, there're no chance someone could take the money out, and all the transaction is registered so you don't have to be worry. I am so sorry for the inconvenience."

Thanks for sharing your story Kaludine. I am sure that you know which airline that I am talking about since they also operate in Indonesia. LOL! I like what you did to that person and glad that it worked for you. you have taught him a good lesson. I supposed your money was safe ya... Anyway, thanks again and have a nice day.

Yes, the money was safe and we can claimed it three days after the incident, thanks for asking. LOL. Well, I just want to go back to your main question, what you're going to do if a customer service is being rude is by asking their name and demand the manager to serve you. I learned this from my aunt, the professional complainer, and after seeing her did this many times, I know this would work better than burst out in anger to this helpless people.

By the way, I have tried this many times, and it worked in almost every situation. In a restaurant to a rude waiter, in a shop to a rude cashier, and I think if you're in this kind of situation, you can do this. "What's your name? I need to talk to your supervisor." That's the magic sentence to show who's the boss. Good luck and, you're welcome:)

I know how you feel, since I live in Indonesia and such situation is not something rare.. lol....
And as our friend explained earlier, some time shouting back could help solving the problem but after sometime when think it over I find out that we just waste our energy and emotion where mostly drawn the problem deeper in some case.

I try to solve such condition with a manner, but if its take to long..then I think it could hit my nerves.

Save you breath, energy and emotion on anything else.
