Is genetically modified food(GM food) safe to eat? |
|
Have you heared of genetically modified foods(GM food)? When genetically modified foods appeared several years ago, I remember that most people in my country were interested in GM food, but now, more and more people have been actively protesting against GM foods for various reasons.
Now, when buying some foods, most people tend to check the label first to make sure it's not the GM foods. It seems that lots of people are concerned about GM food. It is obvious that GM food has its supporters. But until we know for sure, I'd like to be on the safe side.
So, what is your opinion on the GM foods? Is it good for our health? Would you eat GM food?

3. Baluyadav (1364) | 2 months ago | Hi,friend,GM food is no way concerned with health point. Those words are all baseless. There is difference between organic and inorganic food in influencing health as pesticides traces may in food in inorganic food.In the initials days we faced protest against introduction of Hybrid varieties..then B.T.[Bacillus Turengenesis]cotton,B.T. Brinjal.[egg plant] Now the term is G.M. food.Actually Genetically modified food means- 1]We can get all vitamins..proteins..what ever human body need,we can incorporate/identify pest and disease resistant genes and incorporate in G.M. food crops by genetic engineering method. So no worry and i am strong supporter of G.M food that is based on present need of the world. It is my duty to respond this as i am a scientist in Genetics and Plant breeding and now my main research work is on evolving high yield hybrids in Chilly crop. Have a nice time.

No food replace natural foods. If we try to have the genetically modified food it is like the harmful chemicals we are intaking.

5. carmelbg (415) | 2 months ago | I have heard of genetically modified food and I remember when it came out people were very dubious about it. I know that there hasn't been extensive testing on this, there is also a concern that these foods promote anti-biotic resistance as this is part of the GM process. I don't think I would eat it (who knows if I have already) the long term effects haven't been tested enough. I prefer organic and natural foods but I do not know if everything is labelled correctly. For all I know some foods I have consumed could be GM foods or derived from GM ingredients. I would avoid these foods until they have been tested further.

| 6. mynot1 (27) | 2 months ago | Well you eat genetically modified food everyday.. even carrots are genetically modified they use to be white in color and they are suppose to be good for you. So I guess it depends on what exactly you are going to eat... some food would be ok and some food not. Food like soy beans for soy milk would be great if they could genetically modify it and take out the estrogen so that little boys who have to drink it because they are lactose intolerant would not grow a little 'chest' like a girl come puberty time. There's good and bad in everything!

7. peavey (3870) | 2 months ago | Most people don't understand what genetically modified foods are, so they don't realize the health problems they can cause. When our bodies digest a carrot (whether white or orange or purple) it recognizes it as a carrot. When the genes of that carrot are modified in a laboratory, it becomes something different. Genes of animals are spliced into it and so it becomes something never seen or anticipated in nature. Our bodies are confused by it as they should be.
Since GM foods have come on the scene, food allergies have risen alarmingly, digestive health problems are of concern and world food farming and storage are at risk.
This corporation has created sterile seed so that farmers must buy new seed each year. That means that seed can't be saved so if a very bad growing year happens, our food supply is threatened.
Besides all of that, a huge corporation is claiming ownership of these foods. When plants grow, they require fertilization to produce food, and if the field of a farmer next to a GM field is organic or whatever, the GM food genes get into it, making it worthless to its market.
There are many, many problems with GM food. I wish people would do some research before making up their minds about it.

8. aixshaonline (292) | 2 months ago | I remember when I was in high school (around 8 years ago), our Economics teacher was a staunch advocate of the anti-GMO (genetically modified organisms) campaign. She would tell us how unsafe it would be for humans to eat such.
As what my teacher used to tell us, "GM is unfit for human consumption". I do believe this. It may be the solution to world hunger, but the long-term effects of having such modifications in the food are yet to be known. It may contain all of the needed nutrients by the body, but is the structure perfect enough? Would it really cause more good than harm? If there are deleterious effects because of eating them, what would the world do? So, no, I will not take the chance of eating GM food. I'd still go for natural, organic, and non-modified food.

9. michaeldadona (3787) | 2 months ago | When we do talking about any type of processed food, the first part or section to look is its expiry date. Next imperative point is the label of content which is a must view, read, focus, select, and decide. Absolutely, knowledge in food health nutrition is much needed for our decision making because what we eat it's the thing to be our blood. About GM type of food as you highlighted, so far I can accept whatever product produced by KFC and my next prime selection is it's organic related type of food.

10. mipen2006 (2456) | 2 months ago | Hi getbrowser, this debate will go on for a long time yet, and there are many who believe GM foods are the way of the future, but many also have the opposite view. As far as I'm concerned, if it's not broke, why fix it. I'm happy with what I've been eating, so why change!
