Have you ever misinterpreted, the meaning of a chance of rain?

I used to think that a chance of rain meant how much rain. But it kind of means this too. But I discovered as time progressed, that it means how long it will rain during the day. Like for example, if the weather forecaster says that it is going to be a chance of rain of 95%. It means that it will rain for most of that day. As I learned about the weather, I found what a chance of rain really meant. Did you ever get the chance of rain mixed up?

I thought the chance of rain just meant that it may or may not rain. LOL So, like if there was a 95 percent chance of rain, you could pretty much bet that it was going to rain that day. But if there was only a 30 percent chance of rain, then it probably wouldn't.
However, now that you say that, it does make since. Because when there is a 30 percent chance of rain, it is usually sunny part of the day and just a little bit of the day is it cloudy or maybe rainy.
Hmmm, thanks for pointing this out to me Cream and have a wonderful night!

i think the meaning is the chance or possibility of having rain on that day maybe 95% and only 5% not raining. aybe the forecaster see the thick clouds and suggested this possibility. If only thin clouds appear i their satellite, maayb ethe chance will be less like 20% , I guess.

I didn't even know what it means. What i know about it since before reading your post is that the probability that it will going to rain. Anyway, why do they use such term to forecast the weather. It would only confuse a lot of individual like me who is still unaware of that kind of term.

hi cream no I pretty much understood what that term meant but when the weather forecaster said two weeks ago a sixty per cent chance of rain, it sprinkled for ten minutes and did not even lay the dust down on the streets . guess he got something mixed up
somewhere. It has been over a year and our rainfall was a whole inch and a half for a whole year here In Ca. it is tinder dry.So far this fall we have not had the horrible wild fires we had earlier but I do hope it continues not to have them. most of them were set by arsonists. I cannot understand why they do that, dont they care how much destruction they cause , even deaths these last fires?

I never really knew what it meant, I thought if it says 20% chance of rain, that it meant we might get a little rain and we might not. I thought that if it says 50% chance, that meant it was going to rain for sure..haha.
