Is the PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) losing it's prestige? Charisma? | | | | I started to watch the PBA during the 1992 Governor's Cup Semifinals. During that conference, Swift was leading everybody and Tony Harris was their import. I think the PBA fans during the late 80's and the 90's really know who Harris is and what he's done in the PBA. He's rewritten and set new records in terms of scoring. Well, anyway, I've been a San Miguel Beer fan since 1993 until now. I watch PBA games on television every game date even if it's not y favorite team playing. The PBA was really so great during those times. Because I got so hooked to the PBA, I regularly bought magazines. I just found out that the excitement of the PBA way back in it's conception and during the 80's are more intense. It seems that every game date is a fiesta celebration for the fans. I am trying to compare the PBA now and the PBA before and I think though the players now are already a lot better than before, it somehow have lost it's glitter and pride. One thing that I've been thinking is that there are a lot of other avenues of fun and entertainment these days. Before, the PBA has been one of the major source of entertainment. Another thing that I'm thinking is that the PBA have become too commercialized. It seems that SMC (San Miguel Corporation) is monopolizing the PBA. Let's just all try to take a look at San Miguel Beer's roster for the last couple of conferences, even their third string of players are potential starters for other teams. Third is that the new generation aren't that hooked to local basketball anymore. The younger generation patronize the NBA more than the PBA. The level of spirit of the fans when teams like Crispa, Toyota, Ginebra, and San Miguel are way too high compared to the excitement of the fans these days, even the Ginebra fans now aren't as lively as before. Many say that the influx of Filipino-foreigners have caused the decrease of interest but I think it's not the case. Let's imagine the PBA now without Mark Cagiuoa, Jayjay Helterbrand, Kelly Williams, and the rest of the Fil-foreigners, it would be so boring and bland type of basketball, the kind of basketball that we somehow see during local inter-town tournaments. The PBA really needs some overhauling to do in order to bring back the glory days that it used to be. The UAAP and NCAA are way too better than the PBA in terms of fan base. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

| | I think of a lot of factors why many people doesn't troop to the playing venues as they used to. Some of the factors are the one's you have mentioned. Another that I can add is the economic situation in our country. Because of inflation, economic crisis, retrenchment, and other things, people need to prioritize their basic need before entertainment. I think it is true in many sports events and not only in basketball. But I agree with you that there may be something lacking in which, when improved might bring back the crowd that troop to the game venue when their teams are playing. | | | | | | | | | | | | March Madness Tickets Find Tickets for March Madness yellowpages.com | add comment | | | |

| | A lot of factors should be considered why it seems that the PBA is losing it's charisma. During the glory days of the Crispa-Toyota rivalry, fans were more passionate about the sport, come rain or shine, fans will still watch. Another factor would be the excitment level of the fans. Pure-homegrown talents like Robert Jaworski, Mon Fernandez, Bogs Adornado up to the time of Samboy Lim, Allan Caidic, Alvin PAtrimonio, etc certainly made watching the PBA very exciting to watch... But now it is a different story, although there are still a lot of talented and exciting players now, one difference nowadays is that we can watch the NBA almost everyday and sometimes at the same time with the PBA... That way I see it, the PBA board must come up with more exciting promos and marketing strategies that would generate interest once again... Also, impose stricter disciplinary measures among all the teams because attacking a fan is not good for image building. | | | | | | | | | | Rubber Basketballs Rubber & Composite basketballs for inddor & outdoor use. | | The interest of Filipino fans started dipping when the Fil Shams entered the league. Most of the rosters are Fil Americans so the Filipinos lost the connection with players. Those days, PBA had the Captain, Big J, the Triggerman, The Skywalker, who Filipinos can relate to. PBA should start balancing teams, since most of the good players are under San Miguel Corp teams and Talk and Text which I heard will enter a second team also owned by Manny Pangilinan. | | | | | | | | | | basketball hoop Find basketball hoop Online.
