What is the history behind Alexander the Great's lost tomb? here it goes
" After Alexander the Great died, in 322 BCE, one of his generals claimed Egypt his own and manage to acquire the conqueror's body. The general was Ptolemy I, and after he hijacked Alexander's funeral cortege, he entombed the body at Memphis, in Egypt." nice huh, well the search for Alexander's the great became on of the world's great archeological quest, and reminds one to this day. Not a trace of this has ever been found, they thought they did find the tomb but it was somebody else.

Ok Geek pay attention, you how I told you; "that the general was Ptolemy I, and after he hijacked Alexander's funeral cortege, his successor, Ptolemy II, brought the corpse from Memphis to Alexandria. The next Ptolemy in 215, built the Soma, a grand mausoleum where he entombed his forefathers, his mother, and Alexander the Great. The Soma became one of the most renowned and respected shrines in the Acient world. Roman Empires like Julius Caesar, Octavian Severus and Caracalla treated the shrine as a place of veneration, and the soma stood for centuries, within a sacred precinct at the heart of the Greek cities.

derick212121 (18)  3 years ago

so what is the big deal, his body is in the Greek cities.

cassie2121 (26)  3 years ago

Well Geek, it does not end there, yet at the end of the fourth century, when the Christian emperor Theodosius outlawed paganism, the Soma and the body of Alexander the Great disappeared.

derick212121 (18)  3 years ago

wait I think I remember something, didn't they say that there is a connection between Venice and Alexander the Great?

cassie2121 (26)  3 years ago

now you are thinking geek.
Yes some say there is. Alexander the Great's mummified remains disappeared in the fourth century CE. Only an ancient, mummified corpse is known to have appear in Alexandria at the end of the fourth century CE. Those remains were the corpse of St. Mark the Evangelist, founder of Christianity in Alexandria, martyred there in the first century after Christ. The body of St. Mark had been missing for more than 200 hundred years, but it suddenly reappeared and was elaborated in a shrine (similar to the Soma) and worshiped by Christians for the next 300 years.
In 828 CE two Venetian merchants smuggled the richly perfumed mummy of St. Mark past Alexandria port officials and brought to Venice. For centuries it lay in the Basilica of St. Mark.

but geek keep in mind that all of this can be the worst cases of mistaken identity , some historians claim that those remains found in the tomb of St. Mark are in fact the remains of the famous warlord in history.

cassie2121 (26)  3 years ago

Geek, yeah we should start packing, and look for the warlord, hey let's do it after college graduation, I have the chronological summary of expeditions of Alexander the Great, maybe your geek mind can help us figure out what are we missing.
