|  The candy cane came about when a candy maker wanted to invent a candy to pay tributre to Christ. He used a hard candy because Chrsit was the rock of ages, and it was shaped into a J for Jesus, or a shepard's staff.The white represents the purity of Christ, and the red for the blood of Christ.

| | There are a couple of reliable sources online that give info on the origins of the candy cane. The most reliable source, snopes.com refutes the claim made by the lady at your church.
