thats right,,Never!!! Well, I'm back folks,,some of you may remember me from my post last week, I am a cookie failure..Well, guess what..its true..Today, I tried for the last time to make a basic sugar cookie and after reading many recipes decided to go with Paula, the southern bells Signature cookie. "This is it,,This is the recipe thats going to work for me..How simple it sounds" So...this morning at 530am by the way, I hesitantly get out my faithful kitchen aid, 200lbs of butter and 99lbs of 10X sugar and off I go..Things went beautifully,,creamed the sugar and butter nicely, mixed the dry ingredients, no problem, added the wet and dry together and formed it into dough or what looked like dough to me..She said to place it in frig for min. of 3 hours but overnite is best, so obediently chilled for 8 hours. So,,I had put it off long enough, out of fear of course, so finally opened the frig and took out the dough..My first clue at failure was that what went into the frig seemingly light, came out so heavy that I almost dropped it on the floor..Ought Oh, I thought, but brushed it off, refusing to believe that something might be wrong...I removed the dough from the wrap, clunked it down on my no stick board, covered the board with 10X sugar as well as my rolling pin and attempted to roll it out. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH,,,it wont roll out..its sticking to the board, to the pin, to my hands,,Oh God,,No..This isnt happening I kept repeating over and over..My dogs are now wagging their tails, sitting at end of island waiting, knowing, the little buggers...No matter what I did, it would not roll, I ended up using one of my very expensive boning knifes to peel the dough off the pin and then tried to form it into what would look something like a cookie..No dice. It looked like something nursery school children did at day care..maybe not even that good. I ended up having to make drop cookies out of them which really pissed me off because I had intended to do cut outs. I bought the cutest little reindeer and snowmen and Santa cookie cutters at Wallmart on Saturday, which will be returned the next time I go there as they never left their package. No, I'm not saving them for next year because there will never be baking in this house again. I think that after all the attempts I have made this year, and God knows that I tried, one failure after the next tells me that I am just not a baker. Last night I made a to die for beef wellington, I, over the weekend, made baked stuffed Maine lobster that my guests said was 5 star restaurant quality but I can not bake a simple cookie. Its just out of my element and I dont know why. Jim offered, for Christmas, to pay for me to go back to school and take the pastries and cake decorating 9 week course, and grateful as I am for the offer I declined. If you have it, you have it. I have the ability to cook but I do not have the ability to bake..Its just not in me for some reason. Oh yeah. in addition to a bunch of, I forgot to mention this part, tastless, drop cookies, I am stuck with gallons of buttercream that I intended to frost and decorate my rolled out ha ha, cookies. If anyone needs some buttercream..let me know,,I'll air express it to you..so my good friends..Thats it,,Thats all she wrote and I am officially done..I'm putting my rolling pin in the Goodwill bag and my pastry bag I will use to clean my dogs ears with saline soution when its time.. and they, the dogs win again,,they love the cookies and are just thrilled that they didn't work..I swear to you, like I've told you before, everytime I pull out my kitchen aid, they come running, like bats out of hell to my side..because,,,they know,,they know their Mother is a complete failure and all they have to do now is wait...its coming...yummie yum yum...slurp slurp...

With sugar cookies or any kid of dough you have to roll out I noticed it is best to put flour on the rolling pin. This works much easier. It is also a good idea to let the dough sit for half an hour before you use it. I think you should take the class because baking is fun. I will add you as a friend and give you a recipe for fudge. It is really simple. Take care and best of luck to you.

Hi randy,,When I was in cooking school, I opted not to take the pastries and cake decorating part of the curriculum as I didn't think I had any interest in it and as a result spent less than 2 weeks touching the art. During those two weeks, however, we were told it was much better to dust rolling place and pin with confection sugar rather than flour. They said that flour only added unwanted weight and could even change your end result both in taste and texture. That is the reason I used 10X sugar. Thanks for the offer for the fudge recipe. I would like that and will definately try it. Maybe I'll be better at candy making than baking!! Look forward to hearing from you and Merry Christmas to you and yours..

If you love baking do it no matter what. I believe that if you love something and it's a good thing do it for the love of it, and someday for the love of it, you will get the results you want. have fun.

Hi vanila..I dont know if I really love it but I do want to be able to do it. I mean I'm a graduate of cooking school and I can't bake a cookie. Baking ans cooking are two entirely different things and it just baffles me that I can cook so well and can't bake. I am going to back off it for a while and maybe I'll try again later..For now however, my rolling pin is on a time out and will probably be there for quite a while!! Thanks for your encouragement...J

Hi sulsisels! I can't bake perfectly too but I won't be quitting. For every failure I make, I try harder the next time. As they said, practice makes perfect. It doesn't mean that if you don't have the talent to bake, then you can't. I don't have that talent either but quitting is not in my option. I think you can do it, it just requires more time and practice. Please don't give up. Happy mylotting! ^_^

Hi sachii, Thanks for your words of encouragement but I just dont think I'm going to move forward with it. I am a chef, not a baker and there is a huge difference between them. I dont get the satisfaction out of it, (maybe because I've had such bad luck getting something to turn out good enough to serve!) like I do cooking. I really think I'm going to leave it to the experts like Betty Crocker and Sara Lee etc when the need arises and let it go with that. I'm not a quitter usually, but I'm so discouraged right now that I'm quiting! Maybe in a few months I'll get the urge to try again, but i wouldn't bet on it!! Thanks for your post and Mery Christmas to you.

Baking is not as easy as some of the ladies I know make it look. I give them a lot of credit because that is one thing that takes talent.

How right you are washingtonmark. I was in denial about it, I swear! I thought, Come on, this is silly, anyone can bake a cookie...WRONG!! Just like there is a knack in cooking, there definately is one in baking. I so have a new found admiration for bakers. Its hard, real hard, and I'm not even sure that pratice would improve my ability as I really do believe that you either have it or you dont and unfortunately, I dont..Thanks for your post and Merry Christmas to you and yours..
