If you were to be a tree.. which tree would you choose and why?  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097) 3 years ago

This is no rocket science ,'pass or fail', kind of project. I thought about it suddenly and had to jump here to ask you all.

A tree is an glorious and awesome structure. Our planet cannot survive without trees that supply us so much oxygen..
So.. therefore.. should you need to become a tree.. what'll it be!!

AND of course you will tell us exactly why.. right?wink

I think I would be a Chestnut tree, as they have been scarce and are now making a comeback. They make beautiful shade, produce an edible crop, and when cut down the wood is a hard wood that is very excellent.

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

Gosh, Gerty!! What a wonderful perfect first response!! My goodness! You have all the avenues covered, don't you?
Another thing I thing of too when I see a chestnut tree in full bloom.. how gorgeous and magestic..just oozing greatness. yes ma'am!!

Can I be one of those bonsai trees which the Japanese(or others, for that matter) meticulously trim? I'm not that small or short but I would like all the attention! Some would even say they are a thing of beauty. At least if I couldn't be beautiful as a human being, then there is hope being a tree.
And I sometimes see them inside homes, so I don't mind moving around instead of just being stuck in one place. ninja

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

so.. a bouncing bonsai!! aah bouce,, I will name my adopted bonsaid (ficus benjamina) 'Bounce'.. is that okej with you?.. I rescued it along with other equally fine things when I helped a older couple move and they left some things for the scrap heap for me to look after. The little bonsai immediately went into my sitting room with a drink of water and a new pot!

You are quite nice looking too with tiny new shoots coming finally and you sit quite near a window beside an orchid about to bloom.. so you choose your company well!
Any other special requests??

myLot reputation of 99/100. bounce58 (8404)  3 years ago

You see?! Just by being a bonsai, I can even change humans(owners, not that a tree needs owners!).
In terms of special requests, nothing special, just that I may see the sun once in a while! thumbup

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

You will see the morning sunrise until it is overhead eahc day that the sun shines here in Sweden and you will get a necessary dose of carbon dioxide also that you need because I talk to all my plants at least once everyday!! Welcome to Sweden, bounce!!

myLot reputation of 99/100. bounce58 (8404)  3 years ago

Thanks! But seriously, my father in law just retired from a Swedish company. So maybe when the economy gets a little better, it maybe one of the places I could really get to, physically I mean.
The fact that a couple of my favorite hockey players are Swedes does not even factor in the discussion. thumbup

i can't decide because there are a lot of trees i like. however here i am going to go for one of those small blue conifers because they match my avatar.

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

So when I think of a blue spruces and junipers.. YOU shall spring or 'HOP' to mind!! Nice choice, I love these evergreens with their miracle 'needles' and ability to shed them every three years, but only the ones that are three years old so the tree never looks bare....and just renews every year. A smart bunny to make sure you have protective cover to blend in with.. heard but not seen lol

Hi fjaril, my favourite trees were always flowering cherry trees but I don't think I'd be one of them, too frothy and fluffy and invariably pinkish. As I've gone Greek I suppose I'd better be an olive tree. I think they are quite lovely to look at and produce amazing oil, I'm not so sure about having most of my limbs severed every year with a sharp saw though.

Come on, you have to reveal what you are too.thumbup

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

Such a practical choice, thea..a tree that is indeed beautiful yet must also be productive! I would think being a goddess and having seen statues armless with even bits of cheek and nose gone would not stir you so much , were you a tree... but I see we have found a tender spot... have we??

myLot reputation of 96/100. thea09 (5382)  3 years ago

I should have just been an orange tree like Sandra.lol

And you Fjaril avoided the question, what tree are you?

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

no, I did write it in the next box, didn't I? cry I would be the ancient dinasaur time ginkgo bilopa!! I am already growing one as well!thumbup

Hi fjaril! You ask great questions, but you never answer them yourself? What kind of tree would you be, and why? Just curious...my nature you know. Curiosity killed the cat, and satisfaction brought him back...

If I were a tree, I'd choose a sugar maple. I'd be so sweet that once a year people would gather my sap to make sugars and syrups to add something special to their lives. My seeds when they are released float to the ground like whirley-gigs, joyously looking for that idea spot to det down roots. My branches are many and spread far to give shelter to lots of different birds and creatures. I stand stately and tall for a long time, weathering storms that knock over my neighbors. I like that because it gives my babies a chance to grow where they are still part of my life because I can see them. I am happy in the fall when I'm getting ready for my annual rest. I treat the world to glorious colors...reds, oranges and yellows. There is a downside though. My muscles are dense and strong, so people cut me down just to burn me up. Of all the nerve....

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

The maple is a wonderful choice, Tree of Canada! It is all those wonderful things and more! It provides plenty of oxygen into the air also can be made into furniture as wellas provide fuel for fire and heat.. A great choice..

I will want to be a ginkgo.. the wonderful tree from the dinasaur time and I still endure inspite of it all. My leaves are amazingly entirely veined and are used to create a medicine to assist with memory.

AND, the fine part is that I planted a wee baby ginkgo three years ago and already it is gone from 10 centimeters to almost a meter. Very happy and I very pleased and this is already the second one I planted.. I planted one in Canada also before I moved away from there and it also is doing well!

myLot reputation of 99/100. catdla1 (3698)  3 years ago

A very noble choice, I was hoping that some one would choose it. Glade it was you. Next time you send me some loppy pellets, maybe you can enclose a few of those leaves. There are days when I could use a memory boost...lol

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

you and me both!catdla!! I think of you every time I clean up Lolli's house and play room hahaha.. as I reap the treasures that will be recycled into the garden.

The ginkgo leaf IS amazing. I first discovered this tree as a child when I was to do a project in school and we would iron wax paper onto the leaves to make them 'waxy' and then we would bring them to school.

I hunted everywhere as nature is my greatest pleasure and after a few hours I cam upon this monstrous tree and climbed up that trunk to get a leaf!! yup.. it was a fascinating one but I had no idea then it was an ancient one as well.

I will send you a picture of my wee baby when again it has leaves, as it IS deciduous!happy

myLot reputation of 99/100. catdla1 (3698)  3 years ago

I would love to see a picture! I'm glad you mentioned waxing the leaves. It brings back happy memories as when I was young we used to do that with maple leaves in the fall, when they were all sorts of beautiful colors. Teachers at school could always count on having plenty of them brought in to decorate bulletin boards.
I also think that my dad went to work on more than one occasion with a bit of wax on his shirt from the iron.blush Even though we ironed the leaves and wax paper between other sheets of paper, some how we always managed to get wax on the iron itself.

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

HAHAHA.. really!! poor dad, but what fun it was, wasn't it?? I liked the schoold days back then. I wonder if they are still fun...

myLot reputation of 99/100. catdla1 (3698)  3 years ago

School WAS fun, at least when I wasn't in trouble for talking in class or something confused. Now kids get away with a lot, even sleep in class. If teachers are strict they get called to the office for it. Geeze...I'm starting to sound like my mother. lol

Cute discussion. I would love to be a California Redwood, living in the beautiful forest, looking down upon the world below and up above all the other trees. What a precious tree they are, huge, with soft needles, and live for a very long time. If trees could talk, I wonder what they would tell us since they've been around for so long.

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

aah yes, the great California Red.. there is a magnificent dignity to them that I cannot help but feel respect for when I pass a redwood or even see one of YOURS in a picture(since I have never been to Califirnia!)

Indeed a wonderful speciment of LIFE! I understand why you would choose it!!happy

myLot reputation of 98/100. Kashmeresmycat (2395)  3 years ago

Yes, I absolutely love them. Can you imagine that these tree's are over 2200 years old, are almost 400' high, and 26' wide. It just amazes me, and like I said "If trees could talk", what would they tell us about what they saw all those years.

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

They hold so much history within, yes. and they help to keep us alive as well breathing out that oxygen the whole day and taking in our carbon dioxide at the same time.. They deserve our respect, don't they?thumbup

myLot reputation of 98/100. Kashmeresmycat (2395)  3 years ago

Yes, respect for sure! There is a tree in Sweden they found, a spruce, which scientists feel is the oldest living tree. From what I understand, it's around 9,000 years old which I can't even attempt to imagine. I would love to just go and see it.

I see from your responses you'd like to be a Ginko tree? Love it, that was one of the first tree's I learned about when I was really little. The leaves are so beautiful, and once you learn to identify it, you'll never forget it. Good choice!

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

Right on!! Glad you know about my tree as well! You seem pretty well informed yourself!! I see I am not the only real treelover and admirer around!! thankyou!happy

If I were a tree... I would choose to be His-tree (History), and never look back at the earthly civilization which is so inhumane to destroy the forest all over mother earth.

I don't want to face the axe.. :-)

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

aah cobra.. the wise and deep thinker..could you really be history,in the 'knowing' all the evil that has gone before?? Or rather,, be history day by day and . as you said. never being cut down..
I know .. I am so sorry also .. we destroy the planet for our own gain and do not want to see beyond the money aspect that we are biting off our noses to spite our faces. I wish we would evolve a little faster before we destroy the whole planet.

myLot reputation of 96/100. cobradene (853)  3 years ago

Seriously, I just wish nature finds it's way to reduce the earth population by half instead of man destroying it completely. I don't mind, if I perish with it. A good sacrifice and who wants to come back again... ha ha Certainly, I don't. :-)

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

we may sound morbid, here, cobradene, but it is also a fact for me.. If we don't, as a species, start to be more caring and responsible, then it would be better to let nature save the best species to save the planet and I don't think it is the human race at this point in time, no matter how many wonderful souls.. they are outweighed..

I will be a ginkgo.. as ancient as the dinosaurs and still growing today and I have planted another.. I suppose one could say it is also a his-tree.
Thanks!

I think I would want to be a mighty Oak tree!!! They grow tall & strong. They can withstand the mightiest winds. Plus they carry their own babies with them. So, no matter where they stand, their family will grow next to them!!!

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

Why YOU must have been is Sweden one time,, were you?? Everywhere here where I live there is woods and mountain and the oak springs up everywhere, even drifts away from mamma.. It is wonderful, this tree.. as they are majestic and strong,, exactly! very good choice, mylady!wink

myLot reputation of 95/100. LadyMarissa (4302)  3 years ago

Sadly, I've never been to Sweden!!! cry However, I find it interesting that the part of the US where I live also has many Oak trees!!! happy I live near the base of the mountains & we have many, many Oaks. Such a lovely tree...as you say strong & majestic. My parents had 8 tress in their front yard...one of which was an Oak. When the tornado came through EVERY tree fell EXCEPT the mighty Oak!!! thumbup Their acorns make lovely little babies whether growing in their shadow or spread near & far, they grow into lovely, strong & majestic trees. When you asked the question, I laughed. Then when I took the time to think about it for a moment, it became a NO-brainer. If I were to come back as a tree, I would want to be a majestic Oak tree!!! (WOOT!!!)

myLot reputation of 99/100. fjaril (6097)  3 years ago

You really DO have a great respect for the oak tree. just by what you wrote, I know it and feel it! Thanks mylady! BE strong as an oak!!
