What are the other diets for hamsters aside from Sunflower seeds?  

Thank you very much for some info, what are the biggest no no's . How can I make sure they wont get diarrhea from fruits?

I think the lettuce is the worst- it has too much water..
I fed my hamsters Chicken, oats, Dairy creamer(especially for the mommas), corn on the cob, carrots, lots of stuff. but I also gave them the regular diet -which I got in the pet food stores - they were usually these BLOCKS of food. They are fairly big- but the hamsters DO need hard stuff to chew on, as their teeth continually grow and they need to chew to file them down.
Don't give too many leafy vegetables and they should be okay. Als o always make sure to keep their cage cleaned regularly as a dirty cage will also cause WET TAIL in Hamsters.
Otherwise, they are quite a lot of fun. I also started with 3 females and a male and ended up with over 50 at one point.
AND that was AFTER separating males and females.. they will fight badly. Females worse than males, and I had to get lots of them their own cages.. (I had many fish tanks piled up.
Also if you have pregnant ones, the females should always have their own cages, as if they are crowded they will eat their own young... sometimes they do anyway.. :(

great info minx that helped a lot, my hamsters love carrots and i do feed them with stuff from the pet shop too. My only concern is that the female hamster is eating her babies. whoosh..

That happens from time to time. it is horrible. You have to make sure she is alone and in a quiet place (away from lots of noise and traffic) But even then I have had mothers that were just horrible and killers. Maybe she needs more protein.. try giving her small pieces of meat like Chicken when she is nursing- it could be that she is missing something in her diet that causes her to want to eat her babies.
