Do you slow down for highway workers and emergency vehicles? |
| |
| I believe it was Christmas eve when a state trooper was killed. the roads had some snow on them, he responded to an accident and had requested an ambulance for the injured. the only available ambulance was busy so the officer sat inside his car at the scene to wait for it. he sat in his car for 45 minutes then remembered that he had to get something out of the trunk. he no sooner got to the rear of the police car when an SUV came along and hit him, killing him instantly. had he waited a few minutes before exiting the car, he might be alive today. did the SUV slow down or did he hit his brakes at the last minute to slow down and lose control then, killing the officer? no one knows for sure. my thoughts are they were going much too fast for the road conditions and now a police officer is dead. do you slow down when you see highway workers or emergency vehicles on the road? if someone does not slow down and someone gets killed, what do you think the punishment should be? in this case of the state trooper being killed, i think a minimum of 6 months in jail would be a nice start but then, the timing of it all, as soon as he got out of his car after sitting in it for 45 min, he is hit and killed..... maybe it was just 'his time' to go? what do you think? | | | | | |

| | I always slow down if there are highway workers or emergency vehicles. I slow down any time I see people near the roads. I always complain about people who won't slow down when they see people walking along the road, especially with kids. That is so sad about the State Trooper. It makes me so mad that people think they can drive just as fast when the weather is bad. | | | | | | |

| | Yes, I'm quite polite driver. I try always to pay attention to what is happening behind me too, and left and right in case an emergency vehicle come. I live just by the hospital so there is quite a lot of ambulances passing by, and sometimes they can't get past because the cars stand so close to eachother before the roundabouts etc. If I see highway workers I slow down, but sometimes they leave all the warnings up all weekend when noone is doing any work and then it is to forget to slow down on Monday :-/ | | | | | | |

| | I got thought some rule when I got my drivers licence, you should be able to count "1001, 1002, 1003" before you reach the same spot as the car in front of you. Apparantly some scientists have found out that it's not that important if you're in a long queue, but I don't think the queues here get long enough. We don't have that kind of roads I suppose. But they do build stuff, and dig tunnels. | | | |

| | I haven't really seen much in the way of highway work this time of year although they are starting to work on the freeway over across town. Alot of people around here drive way too fast for the road conditions. The punishment should be vehicular man slaughter! It is not the state troopers time but the vehicle drivers time to go as far as I am concerned. | | | | | | |

| | amen to that!! it wasnt the troopers time to go yet all the circumstances around the accident made me think that for a brief moment. vehicular man slaughter charges for the driver and jail time of no less than 1 year with no early out for good behavior, none of that. | | | |

| | Emergency vehicles, including police, should always be offered the utmost in attention and deference. If you cannot afford a few seconds to slow down and carefully pass, then you are not a very nice person. Generally speaking, police, ambulances and other emergency vehicles are there because someone needs help. Just pretend that person is your loved one. Then what? Still not worth your time to slow down and proceed carefully? Fortunately, here where I live is, it is the law to proceed with caution around any emergency vehicles, and actually highway workers as well. It is one of very few laws that actually make sense to me. In the case of your story, I don't know what the punishment should be. Perhaps causing the death of someone will weigh heavily on this driver for the rest of his life. Is that enough punishment? It is not for me to say without knowing all of the details. | | | | | | |

| | where i live, if you hit a highway worker, its maybe a $5000 fine and loss of drivers license but for how long, i dont know. you would think that that alone would be enough to slow people down and sometimes it might but not all the time. alot of people out on the roads think that they are above the law which infuriates me to no end. it will no doubt eat at the drivers mind for the rest of his life, especially since it was a state trooper that was killed. is that enough punishment? personally, i dont think so. they had a choice, either slow down and drive with some common sense or drive like they normally would had it been good weather. bad choices should be punished and in this case, jail time would be in order or take away their drivers license. | | | |

| | 4paw, there will never be enough punishment to make it up to the family that lost a brother, son, husband, whatever. Dollar fines (in my mind) are not enough to punish people who act this carelessly and foolishly. Oh sure, their wallets may be hit hard for a short time, but so what? Like I said in my original post, treat every emergency vehicle like it is carrying your loved one. Kinda funny, how that can change your perspective, isnt' it? | | | |

| | Depending on the cermistances, seeing as the details could go in two directions. For that officer it could very well have been a simple accident. After all in a case such as this, it would be difficult to prove if the crash was a dilberate attack. It could go eaither way. When you have your back turned to traffic anything could happen. Wet, slick, or even icey roads make driving difficult for the calmest, most careful driver. Often such weather causes people to speed up slightly because they don't understand that moving fast will cause slippage more then if a person slowed down. Often drivers feel speeding up will give them more traction and help them get from point a to b without an accident. When in reality, even if the breaks hadn't been applied, the driver could very easily lose control of the suv and have caused the collsion that ended the officer's life. And, partly the officer could say have been at fault. getting out on a busy rain-slicked highway bent over with your back to trafic keeps you from being able to move as quickly. Had he stayed put, he may have been able to avoid such a tragic end. However, when George is on the road he always drives with cation. Regardless of the weather, or who or who isn't going by. Its the smartest move to make. Less accidents occour that way. | | | | | | |

| | the roads had maybe in inch of snow on them and the street wasnt busy at all as most people stayed indoors that day so traffic was light. he was on the shoulder of the road when he bent over to get something out of the trunk which i believe was a blanket to give to the injured people he was waiting on an ambulance for. they are still investigating the incident so more details will be forthcoming. if only he had waited 5 more minutes before getting out of the car or done it 5 minutes sooner. | | | |

| | Hi 4pawsx4 . Yes I slow down. If it is more than a one lane highway in one direction then I try to get into a lane away from a stopped vehicle. I did not do that quick enough in North Carolina about a year ago when a NC State Trooper had pulled someone over. He happened to be finished with them when I passed and he came after me, pulled me over and told me it was state law for me to be in the other lane. The penalty for killing someone like that should depend upon what happened. The guilty driver could have been sick so the penalty should be less. Jail time would be good, and you might have a good idea about 6 months. But I think the penalty should also include payment for funeral expenses and emergency services. Sad to hear about that trooper! Too bad he had that urge to get out of his vehicle! Uncanny! | | | | | | |

| | It was really sad to hear that story there, here in our country there are so many cases of reckless driving that there are so many cases of accidents everyday,I don't why they just don't care for others who are working on the road or on the road and this rreally amazes me that even after doing accidents, they don't feel like repenting, everyone should slow down for not only workers but also for animals. | | | | | | |

| | you are so correct when you say also for animals! we cant forget our furry friends! as far as them not feeling like repenting, well, i hope karma comes and gets them. laws seem to be too easy and punishments are way too easy. they need to make punishment extremely harsh to get peoples attention, scare the hell out of them and get them to use common sense. it will never happen though i've got a feeling. thanks for the response 'nar'!!! | | | |

| | What happened was so sad. Things like this really make me mad. I don't understand why some people could be so irresponsible. I am alwasy careful in everything when it invloves other people. Even people I don't know. Why? It is because I believe that I shound not do unto others what I don't want them to do to me or to my family. We should always be mindful of other people and consider what is the effect of our actions to them. What if that trooper is the head of their family? Whoever that person who killed the trooper even by accident should learn a lesson. He should pay for what he did. He should be punished so that he will learn to be more responsible. | | | | | | |

| | luckily, the trooper had no children and was single but still, he had his elderly parents and other family members who loved and somehow could have counted on him. to have it happen around christmas, you know those parents will never enjoy that holiday again when they no doubt used to look forward to getting together will family members and their son during that time. his other 'family' in st. louis were the troopers who worked with and along side of him. they were all so devastated that those who were on the same shift as him were immediately called back to the headquarters and given mandatory 2 days off for grieving and grief counseling. when they all came in, one by one, they were all crying as they'd heard about it on the radio prior to being called in. so now we have 2 families who lost a loved one and a partner. some people just dont think of the consequences of killing someone, be it intentional or not. they dont think that the person they killed is someones son, brother, daughter, wife, husband or mother. they just dont seem to care........ thats the sad part about accidents when the drivers make the wrong decision without giving more thought to the consequences. thanks for the response!!! | | | |

| | thats ok, one day those inconsiderate drivers where you live will need an emergency vehicle and have to put up with people continuing to drive, not giving the right of way to the emergency vehicles they need. to have to put up with what they themselves have done might just wake them up. remember, what goes around comes around and one day, it will happen to them! maybe that will wake them up and make them do right?? | | | |

| | I slow down as well as move into the next lane even if it means I have to go to the next exit. I honestly think that its so unsafe to stop on a highway that it makes people think OH I CAN DRIVE 90mph they never pull to over on the highway. Its amazing I can have my vehicle speed control on 62 and everyone flys past me and is out of site in 15 secounds. The spped limit where I live is 60. Punishment???? I think their hearts are pinished right now BUT I think they should loose their liscense for at least 90 days if there is no prior tickets and if their are prior tickes for speeding and carless driving then they should make it a year plus house arrest. I also think they should do 24 month of community service of cleaning up the trash of the roadways, at least 4 hours a week. | | | | | | |
