It's That Time of the Month Again... | | | | Today I got up and glanced at the calendar. "Ortho @ 4:00" ??!!! I take the calendar more seriously this time... "Ortho @ 4:00" Ughhhhh...Noooooo, not again! Not today... For those of you who don't know me, which is practically all of you, if I had to pick a place where I dread going to the most, it wouldn't be Chuck E. Cheese's, it wouldn't be a nature reserve on a rainy day, it wouldn't be the hospital, the Halloween superstore, a public restroom, or even a potpourri shop; it would be the office of my orthodontist. Oh, how I wish I were sick like I was when my previous appointment snuck around. Oh, how I wish I wrote it in chicken scratch so I couldn't read that horrible, dreadful phrase... "Ortho @ 4:00" But unfortunately, today, I feel the healthiest I've been all week. And strangely enough, I had good penmanship for January 16 on my calendar... What the...? I must be brave. I must face the pain of the piercing wind and sub zero freezing temperatures... My sis is a big fat liar. it is 54 degrees F here pplz. Sorry, my brother was trying to write this discussion for me. Don't mind him. He has no idea what he's talking about. As I was saying, face sub zero freezing temperatures... And blistering cold winds I must also brush my teeth slightly longer than my usual job... And remember to wear my oral rubber bands for once... Ugh... Okay, so I get to the orthodontist's office. (Nice! They have the newest issue of People...) Receptionist: "Stefanie, we may see you now. Room two, please" My mood immediately changes. I had a gut feeling that pain & annoyance was in my near future... Orthodontist: "Hi, how are we today?" Me: "Fine thanks." (Pftt...like he cares, right?) Orthodontist: "Just fine, eh? Okay! Let's have a looky." I open my mouth and before I think to shut my eyes, he shines that bright light in my face, causing me to see rainbow spots all over his dental mask. H'm...I want Skittles now... Orthodontist: "Ah, okay...looking good, looking good...well better, but looking good...Are you still wearing your rubber bands, hun?" Me: "yaahesss." Orthodontist: "All the time?" Me: "yaahe." (Pfft...liar. Shut up, brain!) He stretches out my mouth some more... says some dental jargon to his assistant. Orthodontist: "What color elastics do you want, hun?" Me: "Gulea." Orthodontist: "What was that?" (Idiot. Maybe he should take his fingers out of my mouth so I can speak English) Assistant: "She said, 'clear.'" Orthodontist: "Oh! Clear it is! Hmmm hmm hm hm hm..." He begins to hum. He takes off my old elastics and inserts a new archwire. The wire pokes into the back of my gums. He finally realizes the wire is too long after several more painful pokes deep into my gums. Upon this discovery, he gets out my most feared instrument...this huge, black, dental wire cutter. I begin to sweat. He inserts the wire cutter towards the back of my mouth to cut the wire ends. I open my mouth and eyes extra wide for this one. He snipped part of my gum trying to cut a wire with it once... Thankfully, this time around, he manages to cut both ends of the archwire and ONLY the archwire, causing less pain than the usual... After the worst is over, he painfully pinches my lip against his dental instrument every time he inserts an elastic band on a metal bracket on my braces. I wonder if passed with a D- in dental school... Tears begin to form in my eyes, slightly clouding my vision, but intensifying the light from overhead. How lovely... He finally finishes inserting my elastics. I am free from torture! Well... for another month... Do you dread going to your dentist or orthodontist? Do you consider your dentist/orthodontist pretty good or pretty darn horrible? Tell me some of your dentist stories. Thanks for listening. | | | | | | | | | | No Dental Insurance? | | Ah, well at least you haven't grown immune to the anesthesia yet. That just makes it that much more like cruel & unusual punishment. Then to have even more wisdom teeth come in ( & some teeth knocked out )& mess the whole thing up. | | | | | | | SpaghettiEqualsYUMM (294)

| | Hi, uath. I know some people can have an allergic reaction to the anesthesia, which is incredibly dangerous. I had to get four of my teeth pulled before braces were put on. I was knocked out for the procedure and didn't feel a thing until maybe an hour after I woke up. That sucked. lol. Then when I got my braces on, I had to wear this bite plate to prevent me from biting down on my braces. THAT was excruciating, let me tell you. Complete torture. I lost a lot of weight because it hurt so much to bite down on anything for months. Glad that part's over...lol. | | | | | | | No Dental Insurance? Find Affordable Dentist Fast! | | Really sorry that happened, allknowing. It happens to a lot of people who are scared to go to the dentist. My uncle on my mother's side is extremely afraid of the dentist. He hasn't gone in at least 20 years and he barely has any teeth left because they have all rotted away. My mother keeps pressuring him to go to a dentist and get his teeth done, but he won't do it. He has a major case of depression and he won't take care of himself. He has a drinking problem and we think it's partly to reduce the pain he may be feeling in his mouth and gums. We're afraid he might have several tooth abscesses, which can lead to an infection in the blood stream or even cause swelling of the brain, which will cause death if left untreated. He's also afraid of doctors and hospitals so...there's a good chance that he might actually suffer these fatal consequences, even in today's society. Allknowing, even though you feel like a miracle didn't happen to fix your original teeth, I believe it's something quite special that eventually you managed to visit a dentist despite your fear. Not many people have those guts, even if they are given a death threat. Shocking, but true - like the story with my uncle. Not only did you get 4 new teeth by visiting the dentist, but improved health, and a new outlook on dentistry. Thanks so much for this response. | | | | allknowing (5156)

| | Hi Spaghetti! Well, I used to be a dental assistant and of course, I've been a dental patient as well. I could probably fill your page with dental stories really, but those were many years ago. Times have changed a lot in dentistry. Well except for the torture in Ortho. lol I enjoyed your story though--made me feel like I was right there with you! lol Just try to remember that it won't last forever and the bright and beautiful smile you will receive at the end will make it all worth it--honest! I have an old dental joke you might like: A woman comes to the dentist and leans back in the dental chair. The dentist wheels over and peers into her mouth and asks, "Do you floss regularly?" "No, Doctor, I really don't like to floss." "It's a pain in the a$$." The woman said. "Well,Madam--if that's where you are feeling the pain, then you're doing it wrong." The dentist replied. :-) | | | | | | | SpaghettiEqualsYUMM (294)

| | I knew I would attract at least one person who has practiced dentistry with this discussion. Glad you took it well. lol. Well, I have no problem with my dentist or his dental assistants. I managed to find a really good dentist after trying out a few. lol. It's just my orthodontist in particular that bugs me, mainly because the whole wearing braces experience has been horrible and incredibly painful for me. Plus, sometimes I really doubt that he knows what he's doing, especially when he cut my gum with the wire cutter, but I guess it happens...lol. And yes! Looking forward to getting my braces off, which is really soon! I know it will be worth it when it's all over. But right now, I just like to complain. haha. Glad you enjoyed my story and thanks so much for the silly joke. | | | | | | | Denture Implants Get A Brand New Smile With Denture Implants. | | Hey Stef! Sorry you had to go through such torture, but think you will have such beautiful straight teeth! I could tell you my stories and it would make everything you're going through just fine! I have no teeth on the top anymore and that is a crying shame! Yup! I lost all my top teeth and almost died last year because of an infection! My gums were bad, teeth got infected, one by one they got pulled and fianally one got so badly infected that I got cellulitus! The infection from my tooth went into my face, into my eye, my face blew up like the elephant woman! I went to the ER at the hospital and they admitted me! I had never been in the hospital except to have my tonsils out at 13 and here I was 56 years old, alone and scared to death! They told me the infection had spread to my eyes, head, and blood and I could die! Ok!I was in the hospital for a week with intravenous meds being pumped into me every eight hours! No fun! I was near death, so they told me! The poison from my infected tooth traveled through my head and blood! The took a CT scan of my brain! It was mad scary! And it was miserable, painful (the pain meds were fun)! So, think you had a horror story! Three days after I got out of the hospital they pulled three of the teeth and then shortly after that they pulled the last four and a half teeth and gave me dentures! I hate my life! If I could go back to being your age knowing what I know now, I sure would have taken better care of my teeth and gums! | | | | | | | SpaghettiEqualsYUMM (294)

| | Omg, omg, omg! I'm so glad you're okay, Leslie! Phuck your original teeth! At least you're all right. Yeah...I feel like such a drama queen now! Silly me. I'm afraid what you've experienced is going to happen exactly with my uncle (read response 2), who hasn't been to the dentist in nearly 20 years! Practically all of his teeth are rotted away and he still won't visit a dentist to get his teeth pulled and get dentures! (He and my mother had a really bad experience with an inexperienced dentist when they were kids). Don't hate yourself just because you don't have your original teeth, you're still here and I'm thankful for that and so are the other people who love you! Love, Stef. | | | | | | | Find Local Dentists Search Local Dentists in Your Area yellowpages.com | add comment | | | |
