Could all these great men have been wrong? |
| |
| Today, we have many that criticize the Bible and try to make it appear as just another book. But notice what some of the greatest men that have ever lived had to say about the Bible. “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible . . . He is worse than an infidel who does not read his Bible and acknowledge his obligation to God.” George Washington (The first president of the United States of America) “I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man.” “I am profitably engaged in reading the Bible. Take all of this Book upon reason that you can, and the balance by faith, and you will live and die a better man.” Abraham Lincoln (The 16th president of the United States of America) “The Bible is stamped with a Specialty of Origin, and an immeasurable distance separates it from all competitors.” “I have known ninety-five great men of the world in my time and of these, eighty-seven were all followers of the Bible.” William E. Gladstone (The 19th-century British statesman) “The Bible is worth all other books which have ever been printed.” Patrick Henry (The 18th-century American statesman ) “The Bible is no mere book, but a Living Creature, with a power that conquers all that oppose it.” Napoleon Bonaparte (French emperor) “In all my perplexities and distresses, the Bible has never failed to give me light and strength.” Robert E. Lee (American Confederate general) “I have for many years made it a practice to read through the Bible once every year.” John Quincy Adams (U.S. president) “For my part, I loved and revered [the Bible], because I owed almost my whole development in moral culture to it.” Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe (German poet) “By all means drink deep of the fountains that are given to you in the Sermon on the Mount ... for the teaching of the Sermon was meant for each and every one of us.” Mohandas Gandhi (Hindu leader) “When your country and mine shall get together on the teachings laid down by Christ in this Sermon of the Mount, we shall have solved the problems, not only of our countries but those of the whole world.” Mahatma Gandhi “I began by devoting myself when I was a boy to an earnest study of the Old and New Testaments in their original languages.” John Milton (English poet, author, polemicist and civil servant for the Commonwealth of England) “for Newton . . . there were two ways to examine the universe God had made, one through the book of nature, the other through Scripture.” (A review about Sir Isaac Newton published in the “Scientific American” magazine of August 1975) “I find more sure marks of authenticity in the New Testament than in any profane history whatever.” “No sciences are better attested to than the Bible.” Sir Isaac NewtonSir Isaac Newton (Natural philosopher and mathematician) “No major contention of Scripture has been proved unhistorical.” W. F. Albright (Archaeologist) “Whenever there is sufficient documentary evidence to make an investigation, the statements of the Bible in the original text have stood the test. . . . The chronological and geographical statements are more accurate and reliable than those afforded by any other ancient documents.” R. D. Wilson “The Bible is worth all other books which have ever been printed.” Patrick Henry (The American revolutionary leader famous for the words “Give me liberty, or give me death.”) “OH GIVE me that Book! At any price give me that Book of God. Here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be a man of one Book.” John Wesley “The best Book in the world.” John Adams (President of USA) “Cultivate an acquaintance with a firm belief in the Holy Scriptures. This is your certain interest.” Benjamin Franklin (American statesman, scientist and philosopher) “I have always said and always will say that the studious perusal of the Sacred Volume will make better citizens, better fathers, better husbands . . . The Bible makes the best people in the world.” Thomas Jefferson (President of USA) “To every man who faces life with real desire to do his part in everything, I appeal for a study of the Bible.” “I have a very simple thing to ask of you,” he said. “I ask every man and woman in this audience that from this day on they will realize that part of the destiny of America lies in their daily perusal of this great Book.” Woodrow Wilson (US president) “Believe me, sir, never a night goes by, be I ever so tired, but I read the Word of God before I go to bed.” General Douglas MacArthur “From the time that, at my mother’s feet or on my father’s knee, I first learned to lisp the verses from the sacred writings, they have been my daily study and vigilant contemplation.” Daniel Webster (Statesman, lawyer and student of literature) “The most original book in the world.” Ralph Waldo Emerson “I have taken tooth and nail to the Bible and am got through the Five Books of Moses and halfway in Joshua; it is really a glorious book.” Robert Burns (The Scottish national poet) “(The Bible) Contains more specimens of genius and taste than any other volume in existence.” Walter Savage Landor (English poet and prose writer) “I thoroughly believe in a university education for men and women, but I believe a knowledge of the Bible without a college course is more valuable than a college course without the Bible.” William Lyon Phelps (American educator) “The study of the Bible is a post-graduate course in the richest library of human experience.” Herbert Hoover “The Scriptures contain a declaration of the mind and will of God . . . They ought also to be read, believed and fulfilled in our day. We accept them as the words of God Himself,” William Penn “I cannot too greatly emphasize the importance and value of Bible study—more important than ever before in these days of uncertainties, when men and women are apt to decide questions from the standpoint of expediency rather than upon the eternal principles laid down by God Himself.” John Wanamaker (Merchant) Joshua 1:8 (New International Version) 8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. | | | | | |

| | I am afraid I do not understand your point...or do you even have one? These men saying these things means absolutely nothing in the scheme of life...there are just as many knowledgeable and great men that do not believe anything in the Bible. | | | | | | |

| | YEP! I agree...not just about the whole just as many great men (and women for htat matter) who do NOT believe in the bible etc but also about there not really being a point to topic...I mean other than the OP stating their opinion of course..but its not a 'discussion' as far as I'm concerned | | | |

| | My point is that: these well known individuals believed the Bible to be the word of God. The question for discussion is: Could they have all been wrong? You are free to list the quotations of great men that believed that the Bible is not the word of God. Thank you for responding. | | | |

| | His point is: Though greatly maligned in this day and age, many respected personages throughout history thought it had great value, even those who did not profess to be "Christian" You borrow a bit from scripture, I noticed, Lamb, so you are also a respected man who views it as having, at least, some literary value, if not moral ascendancy. As a great reader, you cannot fail to notice that, without at least a modicum of background in Scriptural knowledge, much literature would be a puzzle. Take Shakespeare for one small example. At minimum, one could acknowledge the effect of the Bible on our Western culture. And please, don't equate the hypocrisy of some of those who claim to represent it with to its value to the human family. | | | |

| | I think the Bible has many good points vis a vis how to treat others and does contain some pearls of great wisdom, but I do not believe it to be the undying everlasting Word of God... | | | |

| | I think the key to remember is this: The Bible is a repository of truth, not the source. Gary Oldman's villain in "The Book of Eli" made an interesting point. He said that he could get people to do anything he wanted as long as the words he used came from "the book" (referring to the Bible) I think that many people have clouded viewpoints on the subject due to the fact that its words are so frequently misused. In my own personal spiritual journey I have come to conclude that my job is to love everybody and let God sort it out. That does not mean that I always agree with everyone, but loving them is my Biblical mandate. Love God, Love Others, Serve Everyone | | | | | | |

| | I'm afraid You may have missed my point. God is the source of Truth that established the validity of the scriptures. Not ALL of the truth of who god is can be contained within the covers of a physical book, the prophet, Isaiah I believe it was, tells us that "In him we live and move and have our being," The Bible does not even contain enough information to explain every human fiber in one body, let alone the totality of who God is. Perhaps I should start here: I believe what Jesus said about himself that he is the Son of God, Died for my sin, was buried and resurrected and is the only way to establish a saving relationship with the creator. I also believe that every word in scripture was inspired by God and is, in fact, Truth. My point was this, not everyone that comes to scripture takes away the same thing. Some, by virtue of their particular character, choose to manipulate others using the power and authority of scripture. I wonder if I might ask, with all due respect, why do you find it necessary to use "Pastor" as a part of your screen name? | | | |

| | Hi Markrmorris2! Thanks for responding. I agree with you in that God is the source of truth. The Bible was inspired by God and it reveals some of the things he wants us to know. Reading and applying what it says in our lives is definitely a right step, especially its directives on love. I like your motto! | | | |

| | Many of the people who criticize the Bible have not read it, or they have only read bits and parts of it. You can find all the depravity of the human race in it, as well as all the grace of heaven. It is something I need to read more. | | | | | | |

| | lol =D As far as i seen it, all the great man mentioned in there, are all europeans, and there are no ASIANS in it at all!! So does it mean, asians does not believe in bible at all, or there are no great men?? lol =D Whatever it is, religions is up to individual to decide, and bible might be the best to christians, catholics etc, but it might not be suited for others ^_^ It's never easy to try understanding the bible. IF not, there wont be so many troubles brewing just because of it.. So is the bible, a good thing or a bad thing?? haha =D | | | | | | |

| | The problem is that in some Asian countries freedom of being able to read the Bible openly has not existed. Also freedom to be able to choose a religion has not existed either. So that may be a reason. Or I just need to search a bit more. | | | |

| | I do believe this book has given us good stuff i mean great stuff. But those people who you think said those words written above, I would agree with lamb, those people dont know what the bible is and have not even read it much. I believe in God the father all mighty. But i dont believe in giving 10 percent of your share to the church, asking collections in every mass. These are not the word of the real bible. | | | | | | |

| | I will continue to read it myself and make my own decisions when it comes to the Bible. I would encourage everyone else to do the same. The truth is the truth even if no one else believes it. But when it comes to the Bible it's encouraging to see so many others reach the same conclusion, that it is the word of God. | | | |

| | “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible . . . He is worse than an infidel who does not read his Bible and acknowledge his obligation to God.” George Washington When and where did Washington say this. He didn't! This is a fake quotation. I am not going to research the rest since the first one is false. | | | | | | |

| | Hi Chiang_Mai_boy! Thank you for bringing this matter to my attention. There does seem to be some controversy as to if, when, or where George Washington made that statement. If I could I would remove it until I knew better. However, for whatever it's worth, I did find this on wikipedia: "His adopted daughter, Nelly Custis-Lewis, in response to a request from Jared Sparks in 1833 for information on Washington's religions views, wrote, "He attended the church at Alexandria when the weather and roads permitted a ride of ten miles (a one-way journey of 2-3 hours by horse or carriage). In New York and Philadelphia he never omitted attendance at church in the morning, unless detained by indisposition [sickness]." She continues by saying "No one in church attended to the services with more reverential respect." She adds: "I should have thought it the greatest heresy to doubt his firm belief in Christianity. His life, his writings, prove that he was a Christian. He was not one of those who act or pray, that they may be seen of men."[9]" The point of my post was that some great man were believers in God and in the Bible. And even if the quote cannot be found in writing, it doesn't mean that George Washington did not believe in God. If he attended a Christian church where the Bible was often read, he probably had some respect for it. Also, just because there be some controversy concerning the statement by Washington, I found no controversy about all the others. This is a discussion board so further discussion is welcomed. Thank you! | | | |

Lincoln frequently referenced God and quoted the Bible, yet never formally joined any church. He was private about his beliefs and respected the beliefs of others." | | | |
