State Snow Globes | | | | Hi! Greetings from upper Mair-lin! (That's how we pronounce "Maryland" in our state. Cool huh?) Ah...Maryland. The lan of nonexistent __'s and extra stress on the AARE!!! sound. Yep. There's no other place for me but here. AND F--KING HONOLULU! @ Honoluluans: pardon the French... @ the French: pardon me holding you accountable for Honolulu outburst. But I have to admit... You guys were my inspiration. Be proud. To get to the point, I bring myself to the 'Lot today because Maryland looks like a huge snow globe right now... on my weekend. The weekend before I start college. Juust spec-TAC-U-lar... See, Maryland is one of those collector snow globes. Not intentionally trying to be a state snob (even though Maryland is clearly the best), so let me explain: Some people are gifted snow globes. Some people buy snow globes. Some people buy snow globes as gifts. Some people buy snow globes for themselves. The difference between said actions here? Snow globe quality. Le--t me explain. Snow globes have been around since the late 1700s, but that's not really important here. I just wanted to sound like a snow globe expert. Who doesn't? Anyway, to get to my point, there are many different types of snow globes: (1) Plastic manufactured snow globe filled with water and large plastic white snow particles simulating unpleasant hail storm. (2) Plastic manufactured snow globe filled with water and shiny, silver particles simulating unpleasant airplane shrapnel shower. (3) Glass manufactured snow globe with textured wooden base filled with water and porcelain particles simulating snow on the ground...ALL of the time. (4) Snow globes with flamingos and surfboards, where anything simulating coldness, besides popsicles, indeed, seems out of place. (5) Snow globes of f--king Paris, where you wish you were for the holidays, when all flights to Maryland are overbooked. (6) Glass manufactured snow globe with ceramic artfully crafted base, filled with glycerin and tiny plastic snow particles simulating pleasant slow-to-stick snow shower. (7) Snow globes of any of the seven world wonders, where only snow added to the scene could make them any more interesting. (8) Glass manufactured snow globe with ceramic base, hand-painted with built-in music box, filled with glycerin and glittery white particles simulating a light and pretty snow shower. (9) Glass manufactured snow globe with ceramic base, hand-painted with built-in music box, filled with glycerin, but something went wrong at the snow globe plant that day and someone forgot to add the snow particles... And last but not least: (10) Sophisticated, magical glass, glycerin-filled snow globe made in 1788 with smooth marble base carved by Santa Claus, himself, with gorgeous, hand-painted scenery and glittery white particles simulating a light and pretty snow shower that can dispel into a hidden bottom compartment with the push of a button once Christmas is over, plus a charming built-in music box that plays a selection of five excellent songs on command: "Home for the Holidays," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "Winter Wonderland," "Crabs for Christmas" and "Maryland, My Maryland." Not sure, but I think #10 sounds like Maryland's snow globe the best... According to experts at "Antique Road Show," numbers 1, 2, 4, 5, and 7 are snow globes most likely to end up in Christmas stockings hanging over the fireplace from people who consider fruit cake to be a second excellent gift. Numbers 3, 6, 8, 9, and 10 are more highly desirable and popular collector items, #10 being the most sought after because it is the rarest of all snow globe types and is known to possess mind-blowing, magical abilities, of course. So, back to what I was saying before, Maryland is like one of those collector snow globes sitting safely on its own shelf behind a mahogany glass viewing case. That is, until the collector's grandson, who is visiting, decides to open the case one day, take out the snow globe his filthy fingers are forbidden to touch and give Maryland a forceful, nasty shake, stirring up ALL of the snow from the bottom compartment, causing a huge snow shower when there should NOT be snow after Christmas. Not in Maryland anyway... (sigh) I hate kids... Oh right, we're metaphorically speaking here... Anyway, here's my awesome question: What State do you live in and what would its snow globe look like? Thanks for listening. You're Awesome. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

| | I live in Texas and it depends on WHERE in Texas now doesn't it? Dallas would have Big Tex outside the State Fair and would be the #1 kind, with plastic and hail stones... The Valley would have palm trees, citrus trees and strange looking white stuff just because it does happen once every 25 years or so(and would be made in Mexico.) The Big Bend would have mountains and be of glass with nice glycerin and glittery white particles - because it has been known to snow once in a while (they are REAL mountains.) Austin would have the state capital, the UT tower and glycerin but strange glittery brown stuff to be a dust storm... Amarillo would have the same dust storm, but it would just be an empty thing - unless they went for the Palo Duro Canyon look and then it would be a gash in the bottom for all the dust to fall into.... | | | | | | | | | | | | Rutherfurd's New York From the modern Michener www.EdwardRutherfurd.com | add comment | | | |

| | Hey Stef! I definitely was LMAOOL! What a friggen awesome topic for discussion! I happen to love snow globes and so enjoyed ALL 10 of your descriptions of the various types of snow globes, to which I believe I probably have had one in each category at one time in my life! So, I guess that's why I was LMAOOL! I had two favorite snow globes! One was two adorable cats in a nice glass snow globe with a cermaic white table cloth draped around the outside with the glittery stuff when you shook it and it played my most favorite music box song which I was allowed to hand pick specially for me and the music box store man put in and it was "Fur Elise", by Beethovan! My Grandma had a ballerina music box that my uncle had brought her back from when he was in the Army stationed in Germany and that was the song it played so of course that is the song I needed my "snow globe" to play too! The other favorite was a Light House snow globe with beach scene on the outside, again ceramic and glass snow globe with white snow of some sort when you shake it! I broke that one, well I actually broke them both since I'm such a damn clod! I have the remains of the cat one, which nearly killed me when I broke it, the light house, not so much! That one I think played "Row, Row, Row Your Boat and was given to me by and ex-bf, so no great loss (him or the globe)! Thanks for giving me my Saturday Night laugh! | | Hi Spaghetti! I can't even come close to sconibear's answer, so I'm not even going to try. :-) But, you forgot one kind of snow globe--the kind that can hold real snow and ice. I live in Upstate New York--we have snow most of the year (or so it seems!)No need for any plastic stuff!! Oh sure, most people see the snowglobes with the obligatory Empire State building or Statue of Liberty, in the swirling plastic snow--and they're all excited thinking that represents a visit to NY. But, no one remembers there's a whole freakin state that is NOT NYC!! A lot of it is rural. I'm more likely to get hit by a cow than a car where I live. But, for the moment we are having a dearth of snow! Although our "high" today was a whole 1 degree F. You folks and my cousins in Tulsa have more snow and ice than we do for a change. One of my favorite snow globes is one my grandmother had--sent to her by my sister who has lived in Houston for 30 years. Sconibear mentioned one like it. It's just a globe filled with water and has a floating black plastic top hat, a plastic carrot, a few pieces of plastic coal for buttons and a couple of brown plastic pieces meant to look like branches for the arms. It represented a Texas snow globe with Texas snowman. Gram always got a big kick out of it, so that's why I liked it. Enjoy your snow while you've got it--it will probably be all gone soon. Good luck with college! Hope we'll still get to see you on the Lot, just the same! | | | | | | | SpaghettiEqualsYUMM (294)

| | Gasp! You mean there is a whole other part to New York besides New York?! Whoops, I mean, ... besides New York City?! Sorry, but I found that really funny, because it is sooo true. lol. Every time I think of NY, I think of NYC. Sometimes I remember Buffalo, but only because I like buffalo and wish I had wild ones graze where I live. That would make Maryland so much more awesome! The coolest wild animal in my area is probably wild turkey... I don't get bears or bob cats in my area. I think North-western Md does though. Anyway, I'm getting off base here... I love that description of the snow globe your grandmother had. Such a cute idea. Wish I thought of it...lol. Oh, yeah, I've been meaning to ask someone this, and since you're from NY, I thought you'd probably know the answer: Is the Statue of Liberty really located in NY or in New Jersey? One of my professors told me it was really located within New Jersey borders and I fell for it and believed him. Please tell me I didn't make a fool out of myself... | | | | nyhollyjean (2254)

| | Ah--well that is a common misconception on your professor's part. Although, there were some legal battles about it over the years between NJ and NY. But, it was finally ironed out and I've included a quote here from the website glassandandstone.com: "Some people also believe that the the statue is is New Jersey, not New York. This is an urban myth. While Liberty Island is geographically closer to New Jersey than New York, it is part of the Empire State the same way Staten Island is, even though it, too, is closer to New Jersey than New York City. There was, however, a long-standing dispute between the states of New York and New Jersey over the Ellis Island immigration station. After it was abandoned, the island was converted into a popular tourist attraction, which infuriated New Jersey. The Garden State had given the island to New York for immigration use, and now wanted a piece of the tax revenue being generated by the tourists. In the 1990's a federal court ruled that the Ellis Island immigration station is, indeed, part of the state of New York. However, it also ruled that all of the land added to the island by New York since it was originally donated is part of New Jersey since the island was expanded into New Jersey waters. When that ruling was made, technically you could stand inside the building and be in New York, then step outside and be in New Jersey. Subsequent court rulings have given the entire complex over to New York." It's funny that you mentioned Buffalo, as that's where I was born. But, I've only been back there once since I was 3. But, Niagara Falls is right near there, so lots of people know about it. I'm sure Maryland runs into the same problem we do here as far as folks only thinking about one spot and that's supposed to define the whole state. Whenever I think of Maryland, I think of Annapolis first. Then I think about how hot and humid it is in the summer there and then I think of Laurel--as that's where we found a place to stay late one night when we were visiting DC and got lost. It's ironic to me though that most of the people who can get out of NYC in the summer come up to where I live now as it's a big tourist area near the Adirondack Park and it's only 4 hours north by car. Very beautiful and very different from NYC. So, every Friday afternoon--they all head north and every Sunday afternoon after a refreshing week-end they all head south. And they do it every weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day, every year. Some families have been coming and going for more than 50 years! :-) | | | | | | | | | Make him the XMAS Star! | | My forbidden snow globe is one snow globe above yours and the kids from the snow globe to the east of us keep coming over and getting their filthy fingers all over our snow globes. My solution to this problem is fairly simple. The snow globe to the east is almost an island globe and if we take a hack saw and cut all of it's snow bridges in half, it will suddenly begin to separate away from our mahogany shelf and sink into the snow ocean where it belongs. Hey, how much are they paying you per word? | | | | | | | | | TheHappyNosePickler (125)
