Are we encouraging people when we respond to negative posts?

I answered a post that just spewed out hate and now I regret it as I feel I encouraged their views. Would it had been better if I had just reported it for content and responded or do these people need to know they are being cruel?

It depends how bad it is and whether they were just trolling. Some say the best remedy for hate is knowledge; especially if others have responded, sometimes it's helpful to clarify why the bigot is wrong.

I think they need to know they are being cruel. It's not like we're giving them fame and attention, let alone big bucks by answering them, so let's go for it, I say.

I am totally ignoring such discussions. I think that is best way. If it is too vulgar, then I am pressing the yellow.

I think if they are really full of hate, my little comment or response will just encourage them. Most people who post that stuff, I feel, are set in their ways and what I say, as a stranger, will not even matter to them. Sometimes, they are looking for attention and I will not give it to them. It's like a child having a temper tantrum. But, if it was truly hateful, I would have reported it.
