I'm a writer, so I guess that makes a big deal for me..

But I never knew how much I was actually missing out in terms of great keyboard experience until I used the Macbook. Thanks to the Macbook, I realized that there's a better way to type. :D

The flat keys are perfect for the writer's hands. After that experience, I was never the same again. I would always look for keyboards that are wider than the usual configuration.

On desktops, I prefer the Logitech keyboards. Their keys are wider than the usual keyboards, plus, their classic line is cheap, too. :D

I'm also happy that Acer laptops now adopted the Apple standard of flat keys. Now, if you need a Windows rig, and don't care for a Mac anyway, you can just buy an Acer and it'll have nearly the same kind of amazing keyboard experience.

How about you? Do you like certain kinds of computer keyboards? :)

I don't really care about how my keyboard is although the one thing I do hate is PC keyboards! I hate the noise the keys make when you're typing and they go in so deep :-(. At the moment I have a Dell laptop and it's keyboard is perfect! It's a proper full keyboard like a PC's except they keys don't go in as much thankfully!

myLot reputation of 89/100. nenyalorien (381)   ranked 602 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

Oh yeah, I agree, they do "go in so deep," as well as make such an awful noise.. Though sometimes, I do miss the noise. It's fun to listen to, when you wanna hear how awesomely fast you type, hahaha!

That's the only problem I have with the Macbook keyboard... It's too silent. :D Hehehe!

myLot reputation of 89/100. nenyalorien (381)   ranked 602 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

Iram786, you know, I never really had a term for the experience of typing on a desktop keyboard, but when you talked about them "going in so deep," I'm now noticing how happier it is to work on a laptop keyboard rather than on a desktop keyboard. The height of the standard keys really IS annoying, eh? :D

I was not aware that the keyboard for Mac and PC are different. It certainly will be something I will look for.

myLot reputation of 89/100. nenyalorien (381)   ranked 602 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

Yep, in fact I learned keyboard shortcuts only on the Mac, because it just makes things easier. :D

There's an Apple key, near the keyboard, which is useful for almost everything. Unlike the Windows key, which is basically just to open the start menu. Boo!

Check it out in an Apple Store near you! If you're from the Philippines (judging from the nick), Powermac, Digital Hub/Digital Walker, are great places to take a look-see of the differences between a Mac and a PC. :D

There's a Powermac in Greenbelt, in Greenhills, and Digital Hubs are in Robinson's malls. :D

See you around!

myLot reputation of 89/100. nenyalorien (381)   ranked 602 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

OH I saw that you were from Canada.

There's a Filipino term, Mariposa, that I mistook your nick for. :)

Anyway, do check out an Apple Store near you, and you'll see what I mean. :D

myLot reputation of 95/100. mariposaman (2607)   ranked 479 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

I have been using Dragon Naturally Speaking on and off since I bought it about six months ago. It is a break from using a keyboard, just speaking into the microphone is great until it stubbornly refuses to learn what you said or makes a mistake.

There are keyboards that are like a game controller but expensive. You can lean back in an easy chair to type with them because you hold them in your hand. They are not a qwerty keyboard at all. They save your back and wrists from uncomfortable positions. I have some links to different ones somewhere but cannot immediately find them.

Mariposa is Spanish for butterfly. I live in Orillia, Ontario which was written about in disguise in Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town, a humorous tome by Stephen Leacock. He renamed the town Mariposa in the book to disguise it, and the town (now a city) has adopted the name (Mariposa) somewhat.

I was not aware Mariposa had a meaning in Filipino. I understand there was some historical Spanish influence though.

myLot reputation of 98/100. abitcurious (505)   ranked 1,005 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

You got that right. A lot of Filipino terms are either adapted from Spanish, English or from our Malay neighbors. Fro Example dyip (jeep) is a term for one of our public transport vehicles locally manufactured based on american military jeepneys during world war 2.

Mariposa is also butterfly here. Although it refers to a bigger species (I actually thinks it's technically a moth). It's just sad that I can't seem them anymore. We used to have a tree at home that had mariposas every summer. Now they don't visit anymore. They were beautiful.

myLot reputation of 89/100. nenyalorien (381)   ranked 602 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

I second abitcurious on that. :) Good you know culture! :D

Regarding "Mariposa," I actually encountered the term from a local song: it's a sad indie song about being lonely in a red light district..

"Mariposa" is the name of a famous brothel in Manila. It fronts as a massage parlor of sorts, but is actually a, well, brothel.

I guess it's also a matter of how people choose to name the places here in our country. XD Sorry about that.

That's why your nick struck me as really odd, because of local connotations. I am so sorry for my candid-ness. XD

---

Regarding keyboards, yes, I actually encountered one that was brick-shaped. Its keys are on the side of the.. Thing.

It claims to fix carpal tunnel syndrome, but it's just so odd-looking!

And yes, it's VERY expensive, as well.

I'd love to give that a whirl sometime, if ever I can ever come across it, but as of now, I'm really really happy with my Macbook's keyboard; in fact, it's the only keyboard I am happy to type with. Even on a Logitech keyboard, I'm like, "ho-hum, whatever gets things done." But with the Macbook's keyboard, I imagine my fingers to be smiling! :D

3. myLot reputation of 98/100. JoyfulOne (5049)   ranked 2,646 out of 8,748 in computers   2 years ago

My favorite keyboard is one of those ergonomically designed one. It looks like a wave rather than rectangular. I write a lot, and type a lot too. Mine's made by Microsoft, but I can't see any other name on it as far as style goes. One reason I switched was because I had the beginnings of carpal tunnel and could only type a little bit at a time. Since switching to it, I have no problems with either of my wrists anymore, and gee, I might be imagining it, but it seems I can fly over that keyboard anymore lol. The ergonomic ones are nice because they are shaped exactly how your hands lay, in a natural position. Once in a while I use my daughter's laptop, that keyboard drives me nuts because it's so small in comparison.

myLot reputation of 89/100. nenyalorien (381)   ranked 602 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

Cool. :) Microsoft makes keyboards too? Never knew that. :) Good to know. :)

And good to know that it fixed your carpal tunnel probs. :D

I looked it up, and I realized that they've got really cool stuff now! Neat!

But I'd love to see the day when standard desktop keyboards have trackpads too.. I'm crushing on that ergonomic keyboard with the trackball. XD

What kind of laptop does your daughter have, JoyfulOne? Is it a netbook? Odd that it doesn't have a full-sized keyboard. Usually, standard 13- to 15-inchers have full-sized keyboards already. :)

4. myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3638)   ranked 1,482 out of 8,748 in computers   2 years ago

I have some preference when it comes to keyboards of laptops. I would really like the page up key to be above the left arrow key and the page down key to be above the right arrow key. This kind of detail is present on a Toshiba Satellite laptop series, just couldn't recall exactly what model though. With this kind of specification, I can easily navigate through a page or a window that I am looking at with out doing much movement on my hands.

The keyboard is actually the last determining factor for me if I would buy a laptop or look for another one. Even if all the specs are really impressive, if the keyboard isn't how I would like them to be, I guess I'd just look for that old model of Toshiba.. (^_^")

myLot reputation of 89/100. nenyalorien (381)   ranked 602 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

Wow, this is new. :) I mean, that is a very specific need.. Macbooks don't even have the PageUp key, and it even sucks that it doesn't have HOME and END keys.. But I'm not too bothered by that. I'm too happy with the flat keys to care. Heheh. :D

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, ratyz5. :)

myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3638)   ranked 1,482 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

Just goes to show that we have different tastes and preferences when it comes to the things that we fancy.

Luckily, most keyboards on laptops are adapting the flat trend when it comes to its keys so, you wouldn't have a problem in case you have to use another laptop, perhaps from a friend or an event to register something. thumbup

I am just really picky with the comfort that I can get when it comes to that input device on the keyboard. Also, there is this bothersome trait that I don't like about ordinary keyboard that desktop computer have. They often have the Backspace key and the Insert key close to each other doh Its really annoying whenever I type..

myLot reputation of 89/100. nenyalorien (381)   ranked 602 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

Backspace near the Insert key: that's new, too. :) Are you a programmer, by any chance?

myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3638)   ranked 1,482 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

A programmer?

What made you think that?

I am not a programmer, even if I wanted to anyway (^_^")

Its just bothersome that I sometimes get to press the insert instead of the backspave whenever I type and if ever I am trying to proof read and edit my compositions, not knowing that I have accidentally pressed the insert button before instead of the back space, typing in the middle of the document just takes out the previous words that I have already typed.. (-_-")

myLot reputation of 89/100. nenyalorien (381)   ranked 602 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

Ahh, haha! Coz you were so specific with your keyboard preferences! :D

That's why I thought you were a programmer. Only an IT [Information Technology] guy would be so detailed as this! But then maybe I've typecast you too far.

Anyway, I think that I can finally relate to what you've written here. I've recently returned to using a regular keyboard at work, and yes, it IS annoying to hit the Insert key when you need to just use the Backspace key. It really does mess up a lot of things. Heheh.

Regarding looking for that old model of Toshiba, wouldn't that be counterproductive, as old models tend to be SLOWER and more AGONIZING to use? :)

myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3638)   ranked 1,482 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

Well.. I guess that was quite specific..(^_^")

Yeah, I would really appreciate it if most common desktop keyboards would have the backspace and insert keys distant from each other. That would make it really easy for users like me in avoiding pressing the wrong key everytime I type and try not to look at what I am pressing on the keyboard. (^^ )

Counterproductive? Maybe but, it depends on what usage I would have for the computer. I mean, web browsing and typing.. games aren't that often for me. Old models tend to be slow when you want to use advance programs in them. Latest programs are fast because their requirements are also impressive but, if your just going to use simple programs that don't need much details like space in your hard drive, amount of RAM, your video card display or so on with the Operating System that your computer has, then I guess your computer wouldn't have a hard time and wouldn't give anyone an agonizing time (^^ )

myLot reputation of 89/100. nenyalorien (381)   ranked 602 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

Hmm maybe it's because I'm such a heavy Web user that even my Macbook on 2GB RAM and 1.83 GHz of Intel Core 2 Duo complains on me. I have so many tabs open on multiple browsers that I doubt I'd be able to survive on an old laptop model. Though I do think about buying an old one just to run Ubuntu Linux on it. Heheh. I have a thing for computers if you notice. :)

myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3638)   ranked 1,482 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

It seems like you need a better connection. If you open too much windows or tabs, perhaps some of those web pages or websites have running flash programs or playing some multimedia detail, like music on a profile or giving a slide show presentation, that would really make it slow indeed.

No matter how updated your computer is, if the connection is not that good, your net browsing would really be not enjoyable at all. (-_-")

myLot reputation of 89/100. nenyalorien (381)   ranked 602 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

Oh yeah, I really agree. Here in my area, the speeds are at 512KBPS to 2MBPS, depending on your plan and your ISP. I'm around 512KBPS, I believe, because I'm using a prepaid HSDPA/3G USB Dongle. Both the Internet speeds and the computer specs do play a part.. How about you, how are the speeds there?

myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3638)   ranked 1,482 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

I am not really familiar with speed and measurements of networks.. I am not even sure if I am using proper terms either (^_^")

Anyway, our computer is just one of those 'good enough' ones that one can use to browse the net and mostly do normal things that you can do with computers like games as my brother does on his spare time. The speed that we have is provided by PLDT, their 999 plan before or so. So I think the would offer 1MB or so.. I am sure that its not what we get at all but, that's what seems to be their package..

Before, we lose connection as in the light indicator on the modem wouldn't be stable but, these days, things are looking good.

At work, they have PLDT's highest package deal so I think that's 3MB..? still we're having problems no that connection as it sometimes just lose it and then get it back every now or so..

myLot reputation of 89/100. nenyalorien (381)   ranked 602 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

Hmm. PLDT.

Personally, I prefer BayanTel. But after using the SmartBro USB Dongle, even on PREPAID, though on the Unli promo, I think I'm a happy camper already. :)

Before, when I read and heard about the problems with SmartBro, I swore I'd never use it. But after experiencing its awesomeness myself... No more complaints here!

The speed sometimes hits 512KBPS, so it's already good enough for the way I use it. It actually beats the free wifi in SM City, so I'm happy already. :)

myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3638)   ranked 1,482 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

Connection speed really varies from place to place. So far, the connection that we have here at home is better compared to the one that we have at work, even though the one at work should be more faster and better.

That's what my brother said about those broadband network providers. It really varies from place to place if the connection is good, just okay or sometimes terrible as it goes on and off every now and then.. (^_^")

myLot reputation of 89/100. nenyalorien (381)   ranked 602 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

Oh yeah. I really agree. I guess it's because with ADSL, we have to share the bandwidth with the people in an area. So if you're using ADSL, I think you'd have to make sure that you live in a neighborhood with less users. Heheh.

Cable DSL is better though. I don't know about the actual speeds, but the plans of SkyBroadband are looking great.

MyDestiny was pretty fast, but then during peak hours, the connection slows down as well.

Same with 3G, you also have to share the bandwidth with the users in the area. I'm not sure with other broadband connection types if things are better, though. Well, let's hope that in the future things will improve!

myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3638)   ranked 1,482 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

I do wonder what connections other countries have. Their connection seems to be very impressive but, might probably be similar to the ones that we have here in this country.

I guess with better connection, providers would want to earn more which is rather typical whenever it comes to any kind of services available, if you want the best, it seems that you must also match its price (-_-")

myLot reputation of 89/100. nenyalorien (381)   ranked 602 out of 8,748 in computers  3 months ago

That's true. Here in the Philippines, the standard price of a 512KBPS to 1MBPS connection is around $23 to $25 USD. If you want faster Internets, you would have to spend another $23 to $25 to have double that speed. One company even offers 100MBPS, but at around $350 a month.

So yes, "If you want the best, it seems you must also match its price," is right. :)

myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3638)   ranked 1,482 out of 8,748 in computers  3 months ago

Wow!!!

Has it been that long??

Time does fly without us knowing. Good thing that I still got notified with this response that you gave. Most of the time, I have to check my discussions that I started as well as responded to, just to see if I got replies to my posts or discussions (^_^")

Yeah, internet here in the country is something that you can't compare with the speed of the internet that you get to experience in other countries, like South Korea which is the IT capital, as they say, of the world. And to think that you can simply get connected as WiFi is available almost anywhere for them.

myLot reputation of 89/100. nenyalorien (381)   ranked 602 out of 8,748 in computers  2 months ago

Wow, good for them, then. I'd like to have Internet speeds of that kind in my country. Heheh. :D

myLot reputation of 99/100. ratyz5 (3638)   ranked 1,482 out of 8,748 in computers  2 months ago

Well, it's actually a convenience and a cause of troubles.

It's convenient in a way that almost everywhere you go, though you can't consider country sides yet, you can get connected online. If you need a file, want to entertain yourself, need to contact someone, search information, everyone can just utilize online access and there they have it.

It's the cause for trouble too. Most celebrities get their self-esteem so low that they commit suicide due to numerous hate from people that send their messages of disapproval through the internet.

We happen to be living in the same country, nenyalorien (^_^")

myLot reputation of 89/100. nenyalorien (381)   ranked 602 out of 8,748 in computers  3 weeks ago

Oh wow, so cool, ratyz5! :D Haha, I thought about that, but I tried to err on the side of caution. So. :p

Anyhoo, the problem isn't internet access per se. I think it's just that that region (Japan included), has a very permissive view of suicide. In fact, in Japan, it's rather honorable to take one's own life after a failure.

A very sad fact, and an ailment of the culture in that area.

However, Internet access shouldn't be to blame! They have other options, right? You can always use the BLOCK function, or if things get too frustrating, close down your online accounts. THAT SIMPLE. :)

I saw Lea Salonga advise Sharon Cuneta to use BLOCK more often on Twitter, just the other day. Heheh.

Anyhoo, see you around, and it's been a pleasure talking with you on the threads here! :D

Im not really specific when it comes to keyboards. I dont mind hacking away at deep set keys since my typing training was with the typewriter. But I do know what you mean that these flat keys make typing much easier. As mentioned, no matter how deep or shallow the keyboard keys are, as long as I get to type comfortably smooth, then Im good with that.

I do have this unbalanced feeling when it comes to hand typing performance. I mean my right hand would have to lift the wrist just to punch in some keys like say the backspace. But I notice that my left hand rests comfortably on the side and only the fingers are moving. My theory is that my right hand would have to lift the wrist so as to key in "Backspace" which is usually situated at the uppermost right hand part.
I think that if that key was somewhere closer to the other most commonly used keys on the right side, then I think I would find a balance.

With the orientation of the letters, punctuations, and commands on the right part of the keyboard, I think my right hand has adjusted to a different method in situating which fingers would punch in specific letters and punctuations.

I do hope that made sense somehow.LOL

myLot reputation of 89/100. nenyalorien (381)   ranked 602 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

Haha, yeah, it made sense, actually. :) I do notice right now that my right hand is doing more work than the left, that it's lifting up and going all over the place more than the left. But I think it has more to do with the type of keys it has access to rather than the Backspace key. Because I notice that the reason why the right "jumps around" is more about the letters rather than the need to go erase something. :D

Regarding ease of use, I think that if you used a keyboard with a closer set of keys, as in a laptop keyboard, you would be better able to manage how you type. :)

The Delete/Backspace button on my Mac is situated near the rest of the keys, so it's a lot easier. :) The two things I really miss on a regular keyboard, though, are the Home and End buttons. Heheh.

See you around sis! Have you graduated already?

myLot reputation of 97/100. bjcyrix (3663)   ranked 1,839 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

Well, I am using a laptop. It does minimize the action as compared to typing in the keyboard and I do agree that it has to do with the letters that the right hand is tasked to punch in, but it is also because I use only two fingers in my right hand when typing.cool

Nice to see you again.LOL
Yep, I have actually just graduated last March 27.happy

myLot reputation of 89/100. nenyalorien (381)   ranked 602 out of 8,748 in computers  2 years ago

Wow, congratulations! :D

Really, typing with only 2 fingers in your right hand? :D Though I find that odd, I know it's not too uncommon. :)

What laptop do you use, and how do you find the keys? :)

myLot reputation of 97/100. bjcyrix (3663)   ranked 1,839 out of 8,748 in computers  4 months ago

I am currently working on 1 laptop and 1 netbook right now. The laptop is for home use and the netbook is for whenever I need to work and be out and about.
Surprisingly, I can find the keys through just touch typing, even with just working with the 2 fingers of my right hand. The other three fingers of my right hand just goes with the flow.LOL

Ahh yes, it's the boon of using Facebook and chat to communicate now; thanks to the need to be able to communicate our thoughts as fast as we can type them, we eventually develop the skill of touch-typing at the speed of our thoughts, or something close to that. :)

Over the years I've always used whatever keyboard I had in front of me. Though I like the keyboards that come with the standard lap top. The keys are perfect for what I need considering I use them a lot. Not just for typing, but overall general use of the machine itself with several well-placed keystrokes. Though I like the standard qwerty configureration over all as well.
