Forgotten Heroes ..  email this discussion to a friend?

We all are aware of the popular celebrities and politicians and with the media we have even our future generations will remember them for years to come. But this was not the case fifty years back. There were people who were heroes in the right sense but over time their name has been lost.I would like to dedicate this discussion to one such person from India. His name was Dhyan Chand ..

He was an Indian hockey player, widely regarded as the greatest player of all time.Chand won 3 Olympic gold medals (1928 Amsterdam, 1932 Los Angeles, 1936 Berlin) and was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honour, in 1956.His astounding skills have been glorified in various apocryphal stories and anecdotes. A number such legends revolve around the fact that Singh had a magical control over dribbling the ball. Many say that the German Olympic officials broke his hockey stick to search for a magnet inside, and tried to console themselves saying he had added some sort of glue.

So do you want name of any such personalities that the world has forgotten.

That is quite a story. They should not have broken his stick. Didn't they have x-rays back then?

The most important forgotten hero I can think of was a Serbo-Croation scientist named Nikola Tesla. There has been a revival in interest in Tesla in recent years but for quite some time he was simply written out of the textbooks in the field he dominated, which was electricity. My college electronics instructor had heard of the Tesla coil, but had no idea that Tesla invented AC electricity. He is the one who came up with the idea of stepping voltage up for transmission over long distances and then stepping it back down to make it safe for household use. When I told him, he could not believe it and tried to look Tesla up in all of his textbooks. Together we looked at 50 different books and not one credited Tesla with any of his many inventions other than the Tesla coil and they did not explain why it was called that. I assume that more recently written books wrote his achievements back into history, but I have not checked. Tesla was an interesting character, and liked to put on a show. One of my favorite tricks he did was screwing light bulbs into the bare earth after a thunderstorm to watch them light up. Who else would have thought of doing such a thing?

Hi dranhh.Well you are right.By the way have you seen the movie Prestige by any chance? There they showed the details about Tesla. And in the movie was more like because of various controversies his name was not publicized. And also some historians say that some of the achievements of Tesla have been credited to Thomas Alva Edison.Anyways thanks for bringing up his name and have a nice day ..

Heard of the movie but have not watched it. Yes, there were many controversies from his personal idiosynchrasies to the top-secret weaponry stuff. But my take on it is that the reason Edison tried to suppress his work while at the same time trying to take credit for it was greed, as Edison was promoting DC power which would have made him even richer and the people even poorer, whereas Tesla wanted to make electricity affordable in order to improve the lives of the ordinary people.

Still there is no denying that Edison and Tesla both were difficult people, and although I believe that Tesla had a lot more personal integrity, Edison was very interesting and you might enjoy this article about his life and works:

Hi dranhh. Thanks for sharing this very interesting article. Some of the facts I already knew but most of them were new to me specially that deaf thing.I am pretty happy that even though I got only one response for this discussion but it is a lot better than many others which get around 50 responses.Anyways have a nice day ..

Well, that sure is a nice compliment. Maybe I frightened everyone away, but I think it was because the notifications did not go out. I have not had many lately compared to usually, so I had time to go looking up some old discussions :-)

I'll "bump" this one more time in hopes that some of my friends follow me over and add something. Another of my unsung heroes is Luther Burbank. He was very famous for a while and then public's attention drifted off. But I do understand that Thomas Edison traveled a great distance to meet with him, and usually you know it would have been the other way around. Thanks for the BR ;-)

Hi dranhh.Well I want aware of Luther Burbank before.I just went through wiki to read about him.And I must say he was really very talented and his achievements are really uncomparable.Well then to continue this thread I would like to name another personality as well. And he is from India as well.He is Sushruta, a historical sage physician of 1500 B.C.He is sometimes dubbed as "Father of Surgery".He used to perform surgeries at such historic time.Isnt it amazing?Anyways have a nice day ..

myLot reputation of 96/100. drannhh (9930)  2 years ago

Oh, I love this discussion! Sushruta is an excellent example. He used to perform cataract surgery in the 8th century BC, right? Speaking of physicians, perhaps you have heard of Ignaz Semmelweis? He was a Hungarian MD who was banished to an insane asylum for daring to suggest that doctors should wash their hands before performing surgery.

Hi drannhh. That is ridiculous. There were lots of such cases during the rennaisance period.Isnt it?The best I could remember is I guess the case of Galileo.Sometimes I wish I was born in Europe in the medieval period. It was really an era which saw wonderful changes.Anyways have a nice day ..
