Ever bought an Elephant Garlic Bulb?  

I have seen elephant garlic at the supermarket, but I prefer to stick with my regular-sized garlic. The individual cloves on an elephant garlic bulb tend to be quite a bit larger, which makes them problematic for a recipe that only calls for one regular clove of garlic. If you regularly cook in large quantities though, an elephant clove of garlic might work well.

I have bought it. I find it to be milder. It is sliceable and it can be minced. If you only use part of a clove, refrigerate the rest.

I've never purchased any, but I have had it at somebody elses house. I thought it tasted milder than the regular sized garlic. I grow garlic, the regular sized ones, every year. They keep sowing themselves over and over for years and I always have enough to last through a winter's cooking. Maybe I should try to plant some of it, we use a lot, and G.Gerty (above post) says it can be stored.

As far as other giant veggies, sometimes I grow these giant string beans. I don't remember what their name is, something like yard-stick beans? Anyways, each string bean grows anywhere from a foot to 3 foot in length. They taste the same as regular ones, but these are fun, just because of watching people when they see them. Last year I planted some again and flash froze them to store for the holidays. Everybody got a giant kick out of them because I didn't cut them up, and cooked them while they were still long. I think it only took about 6 beans to fill up the serving dish. The looks on their faces was priceless. My little grandson loves it when I plant these giant beans lol.

My roomie saw her first horse radish bulb the other day - she was amazed at the size - remember, she's only seen those little radishes before... but I've gotten her hooked on horseradish, but we'll stick to the jarred stuff

Good morning, towongfoo27! I grow a lot of Garlic..probably somewhere in the area of 500 plants, some of which are Elephant Garlic "allium ampeloprasum" and realistically is closer related to Leeks than Garlic. Some bulbs can grow up to one pound, and ONE clove can be the size of one regular Garlic bulb. I grow it to eat raw, because of it's much milder and sweeter flavour...great in salads. One caution, tho, when frying, don't use as high a heat..nor cook as long, as if it is seared, can become very bitter. It also doesn't store as well as regular Garlic because of it's higher sugar content...cool, dry atmosphere is best!
