Proud to be left-handed |
| |
| I grew up in an environment where people held on to this superstition that being left-handed is not cool, that there was something wrong with you or even worse, that you’re a child of the devil. Seriously, that’s what the older generation in my town felt about left-handed individuals. Good thing that medical studies have shown that left-handed people tend to be ambidextrous and can be productive as well thereby making a valuable contribution to the evolution of our society in general. The likes of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci can attest to that. I am proud to be left-handed (with due respect to my right-handed myLot friends). | | | | | |

| | I am with you on that one. I am lefthanded too. My Grandpa was born lefthanded but for the reasons that you stated above, it was trained out of him. I think he either eats or writes left-handed (I can't remember which) but has learned to do everything else with his right hand. I can't believe there was a time when people actually worried about what hand someone did things with. | | | | | | |

| | I am a "leftie" myself. My parents said that they had tried to make me use my right hand whenever I write. They said they tried for months. They were successful. I started using my right hand. Everyday, they made me practice using it. Supplying me several drawing materials just so I could learn to use my right hand. So I learned to use it. For a while I was okay with it. Til I got sick. I was bed ridden for 2 weeks. My mom said I would not eat. Just stayed in bed the whole time. So in desperation my mom said, "What do you want me to do just so you would drink your medicines and eat?" and she said that all I ever answered "I just want to draw." So right away she gave me a piece of paper and a pencil. Before I picked up the pencil I asked her, "Can I use this?" raising my left hand. My mom -- just nodded in frustration. Then I started drawing while she was feeding me. Happy to see that I was finally eating. Then just right after she fed me, she looked at the drawings I made. She saw how beautiful my drawing were. She ran to my father and showed him my creation. Then my dad looked at me, picked up my frail little body and said, "From now on, you may use any hand you like." And from that day forward -- I became a full pledged leftie. =) | | | | | | |

| | I'm left-handed also and I love being a lefty. Thankfully, here in America, we don't have any superstitions about left-handed people. We actually have a few stores located across America that cater solely to lefties and only sell left-handed merchandise. I've never been to one myself, but I had a friend that brought me some gifts back when she came across one of the stores. My favorite thing was a pencil that said 'Love A Lefty' on it. :) | | | | | | |

| | Hi baruchaba, My father was left-handed. I say was, because it was practically beat out of him at school by the Nuns. I'm talking back in the 1950's. So, he had to write with his right hand but he worked as a bit of a handyman, with plumbing and electrics. He'd always used his work tools with his left hand but never got out of the habit of writing with his right hand, as that was what he got used to. I think this is very sad, and Thank God times have changed. Fiona. | | | | | | |

| | I am left-handed, and I have never had any social problems because of it. I enjoy being different. My mom on the other hand tells me that when she went to a parochial school like St Rita, the nuns used to smakc the child's hand if they saw him or her writing with their left hand. Talk about taking superstitions a tad too far! There is also a left-hnaded website just for us lefties, too. It is http://www.anythingleft-handed.co.uk/ | | | | | | |

| | I'm left-handed too. I read somewhere that left-handed peoplelive an average of seven years less than right-handed people because everythingis built for right-handed people. However, I cut with scissors and used to play the violin right-handed. :] | | | | | | |

| | I'm trying to become left-handed! I can only open jars (I can't do it with my right) and sometimes use the mouse with my left hand. | | | |

| | well, I use my left hand when I write or when I play tennis or bowling. I use my right hand when I play baseball and strum the guitar with my right hand. So I'm ambidextrous in a way too. | | | |

| | Good for you. I'm proud to be right-handed...well, actually I'm proud that I'm somewhat ambidextrous, as I'm able to use both of my hands for various tasks. I've gotten a few comments from people when they notice this, which gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside. :) | | | | | | |
