Feeding puppies  

hi carmelanirel I do not own a dog any longer but the Purina co sounds like they want you to overfeed your dog, I would talk to a Veterinarian about how much to feed a dog that age. I am sure they would really know the healthy amount to feed a puppy.

I've been going off what the bag of dog food said and it seems to be working for our dog. It started out at 1-3/4 to 3 cups for 3 month old puppies of large breed. Then as he got older they moved the amount up some. I've also read in books how much you should give them but it isn't in measurements. They just say to put the bowl of food down and let them eat. After 10 minutes you take the bowl from them. so you just let them eat whatever they can eat in 10 minutes and then take it away. You could check with your vet. They will give you a healthy amount for your breed of dog and you know they care about the health of your dog.

You and your daughter are feeding two different quality pet foods. Sciece Diet is a premium brand with less filler than is Purina Benefical. That is why the requirements are different. If you read the ingredient list on both bags you will find that the first items listed on the Science Diet are meat products. Therefore meaning it contains that as the primary source of protien. In the Purina you will find that some of the first ingredients are corn glutens, gluten meals, etc. This is a filler. You dog will need to eat more of that food in order to get the recommended daily allowance of protien. You will also find that your dog's stools are larger than those of your daughter's dog. The filler is not broken down and passed though the system, making more mess for you to clean out of the yard.

to be honest, just leave an considerable portion to your puppy, he can control himself on the amount

Hello; 1st I am not crazy about either of those dog foods. A better food without much waste in the yard is Blue, Purina Pro Plan, Hills or a higher calibur of food.
It is really hard to guess how much is good for your pet. No 2 dogs are the same even if they are the same breed. 1 dog can be more active, there are just to many different things to go by.
I have had many dogs. The easist way is to go by what the bag says for your weight of pet. If the dog seems to be hungry feed more. They are puppies they will eat to grow and be healthy. If they seem to be putting on to much weight cut back.
When they start to get older you will have to cut back and feed them what they can handle to prosper and not to get to much on so they can't be a dog.

I just got a 3 month old min pin puppy and I just follow what the dog food bag says about how much to feed your dog. If my puppy seems to be still hungry, I add more dog food in his bowl so it actually depends, he is very hyperactive and always sleeping. he is also growing fast so everyday is a different amount of food he consume. He eats most of the time, like snacks and his vitamins makes him hungrier.
So it really depends on a lot of aspects, only you can observe your own dog so you should watch him eat and wait for him till he finish.

I'd continue to search and check out sites on the net for various aspects of puppy information. Eventually, you will find a site that gives the best info because it corresponds so well with what your puppies are doing. All companies overstate usage of products...the worst being toothpaste and shampoo. We don't need to use those products anything like the amounts they suggest.

Find a site for your puppies you can trust....and not one that produces and promotes dog products...they will only have their own best interests at heart.

Feeding an appropriate amount also depends on the size of the breed and its activity level. If your dog is small, its stomach will be smaller than your fist. You don't want to give too much food in that case, as it can actually bloat their stomach.

You say they are fourteen weeks old, correct? They are still young then, a little over three months of age. Your puppies should be fed four times a day, suggested one half cup four times a day.

A dog's body digests food a bit differently and more slowly than ours do, so be careful on how much food you give them. As the pups grow older, six months cut them down to three times a day, then at one year, down to twice a day.

Still though, I am only going by how I've always fed my dogs, so please do double check with your vet. You can even call them and ask how many cups a day to feed them.

I know that when Shadow Jr was a puppy, he was fed four times a day with a half cup full. When he grew and became bigger, I had to increase the measure of his meal to satisfy his hunger. From one year to nearly two years of age, he ate twice a day, four cupfuls. I now have him graduated down to one cup twice a day.

But he's always been a healthy weight.
