What is the difference between a Coffee Press and a Coffee Maker?  email this discussion to a friend?

I like my coffee. Who doesn't right? Yet I am interested in creating the best cup of coffee possible. However I only have a Walmart coffee maker. It works just fine, but I am interested in a coffee press too. Or a French Coffee Press. What is the difference between the two? How does the coffee turn out? Is it finer than when made in a regular coffee maker?

A coffee press is essentially just a glass or plastic cylinder with a screen attached to a plunger inside. Unlike a coffee maker it doesn't run on electricity so you have to heat the water in a kettle first. You just put the desired amount of coffee in the press, add hot water and that's it. Once it's brewed you push the plunger down and that pushes the grounds to the bottom. Presses are nice because you can play around with the amount of coffee and the brew time to get it just the way you like it. Plus it's great for making just one cup of coffee. The one we have is also dishwasher safe which is nice.

That is really interesting to know. We've always just used a regular coffee maker or when we are looking for stronger coffee, then we will use our expresso machine. I feel like I personally get a better cup of coffee when I use the expresso machine, so I believe that I would like to have a coffee press so that I would be able to give that a try. How much does it tend to cost to get a coffee press?

I just saw really nice ones at Ikea over the weekend for $10. On average I think they cost between $10-$20, so it's definitely an inexpensive alternative to a coffee maker.
