I'm old fashioned enough not to want to be constantly contactable so a mobile (or cell) phone is not for me. Ordinary phone, email, letter/postcard yes mobile no! So why is Cherie Blair advocating free mobiles for women? I know about the safety argument, but you must be in a position to use the phone for it to be effective and it must be turned on surely? I'd like to know what you think, I'm fed up with being disturbed/interupted by mobiles!

Yea it is always good to close our phones but when people can't find us , normally they have lots to grumble .

yes but most networks have an answer facility we can always get back at our convenience -and anyway in the UK you can't use your phone in the car

The question is how would a mobile hone, referred to as handphone or handset here, increases the securty or safety of its owner? As it is any women with mobiles have been attacked and lost their mobile. Maybe the person championing it is more concerned about gaining political mileage rather than being practical.

I am not against the use of mobiles, but it is how they are utilised that bothers me. For example not switching off while in a cinema, the use of loud tones which are not agreeable with everyone, and talking out loud as if shouting to someone across the road.

I think it is political opportunism and I agree about people's inability to turn them off!

cell phones can be handy, but i agree that they aren't for everyone. the only thing i really don't like about phones are the fact that some people can't live without one. the phone is a tool, not an obsession.

Like a lot of different things, it's about how you use it. If you don't want to be reachable, then don't give your phone number out. Sounds pretty simple to me. Of course weather you want it or not is completely up to you. I've been using cell phone for little over 20 years now. For me, it's no different than a house phone. If there's nothing good on tv, I turn it off. Don't feel like driving? Then take a bus or train. Don't feel like going out & doing anything, then stay home & cuddle up & enjoy some alone time. I see a theme here. If you don't like being bothered constantly on the phone, then turn it off or don't give your phone number out. Voice mails are there for a reason. I'm not trying to be sarcastic here. Those are the things I actually do myself. When I go on my vacation, I keep my phone on silent & keep it in my room. There have been times when I needed to use my phone, then I pick it up & use it. It's actually more expensive to use hotel room phones then to use my cell phone. Cell phones are there for your conveniences, not for everyone else's. If you wanna get one, than treat it as such, something you would use at your convenience. It's not always about safety, I don't think. It's about conveniences.

I just don't think they're that convenient. We were given one at work (I was out and about a lot), I think in 3 years I used it once to answer call from a friend.

Is Blair thinking about, or can he (I'm from the U. S., and really don't know), running for office again? Maybe she's just trying to get the Blair's in the media spotlight again for another run at office. (I'm assuming I'm talking about the wife of Blair, the former Head of Parliament.)

Who would pay for the free mobile phones? The taxpayers. So why doesn't the taxpayer, who wants a phone, just go out and buy a phone. Big government -- they just don't know how to stay out of our lives -- our pocketbooks.

Cherie Blair is Tony Blair's wife - she's a barrister or something and yeah probably the tax payers would pay or we'd be forced into getting one (like originally proposed for ID cards - we would have had to have one, but you would have to buy one, dropped now or at least voluntary) Grrr

From what I understand, cell phone & mobile phone are one in the same.

I agree our right to have and use a cell phone is being badly abused but there are some of us that actually need them. My health is such that if I was out in my car and it quit me there is no way I could walk to a phone to call for help. I have forgotten my cell phone and gone out without it and I sure don't feel safe. Also being able to carry it on my belt save me many a step even inside the house. I don't use it all that much but when I need it I really need it. I won't use it out in public of driving if I can avoid it at all. I just wouldn't go some of the places I need and want to go if I didn't have a cell phone.

I know exactly how to handle my mobile. If not for my mobile I would not have survived the ghastly accident that I met with. I keep it on if I am expecting an important call or when I need to make calls but never otherwise as the constant alert that there is an sms or a message can be unnerving. Also if you pay a small sum there is a provision where missed calls are accumulated and when you switch on your mobile you will see those calls. You can call up anyone you wish to then.

if it wasn't for my mom, I probably would be less likely to have a cell, but because my mom is elderly and not in the best health, I want to be able to be reached at a moment's notice.

I have to say I would've liked my cell the night my car broke down, but I had left it at home. Fortunately, a very nice man saved our butts and helped push the car to the side of the road and drove us home.

My GPS which is satellite controlled and installed in my car will contact emergency services for me (ambulance, police, fire, AA, RAC, Green Flag whatever) AND tell them exactly where I am. So although disabled and can't walk far I cope with no mobile (Cell). But appreciate your position re your mum, my parents are dead so I don't have that problem.

Since I don't like talking on any type of phone, it's hard for me to understand the fascination the world has with cell phones. My family does have a couple of them, but the only time we turn it on is when we need to make a call, and we never use it while driving.
