(AP) - Facing potential bankruptcy, the board that governs the once flush-with-cash Kansas City school district is taking the unusual and contentious step of shuttering almost half its schools. Administrators say the closures are necessary to keep the district from plowing through what little is left of the $2 billion it received as part of a groundbreaking desegregation case. The Kansas City school board narrowly approved the plan to close 29 out of 61 schools Wednesday night at a meeting packed with angry parents. http://apnews.myway.com/a... | | | | | |

| | Kansas City Mo schools have been in the crapper for years. There's usually some news story about them screwing up in one way or another. If it isn't the bus company its the superintendents acting foolishly. Been bad news as long as I can remember. | | | | | | |

| | irishidid, This city is shutting down their schools because the state is nearly broke it has nothing to do with the schools screwing up,it has everything to do with the economy and the state is going broke. Appears in the 787 billion dollars stimulus bill Obama's pal's and big supporters came first so much for looking out for the children in the richest county in the world ~ | | | |

| | I understand that, Rose. I'm just saying if it compels some parents to pull their kids out and homeschool, so much the better! | | | |

| | Ok well I used to live there so let me tell you WHY they are closing all those schools. One reason is because enrollement is way down. About 8 years ago the school district got into trouble about how the schools were run and lost their accrediation. yep...some of the public schools lost their accrediation for a couple of years. So a lot of people moved to other schools districts or put their kids in private schools or public charters schools. Also homeschooling is HUGE in the area. So that meant a lot of kids were no longer going to the schools in that district. But the board of education never did close any schools to account for all those cuts in students. If over the past 10 years they would have closed one or two schools a year...they would not have to do this BIG closing now. The economy in Kansas City has been hurting for a while...longer than most of the rest of the country. Why?Jobs. Sprint had their world campus there. Employeed a lot of people. Well Sprint has some major deal go bad...and they started doing MASSIVE layoffs. Then the Ford plant starting laying off. So you had all these poeple layed off and no new jobs in KC go to...so a lot of them found jobs in other cities..leaving KC. They should have been doing cut backs every year as enrollement in their schools dropped...but as I said before they didn't. So now they are having to do alot of them at once. | | | | | | |

| | It seems to me that I heard that most of those schools are partially empty and in bad disrepair. I believe it is probably going to a positive thing in the end. And when there is no money, there is no money. | | | | | | |

| | Enrollement is way down in that district. Most people don't send their kids to the public schools in that district unless they have to. Most go to charter schools, private schools, religious schools, virtual school or homeschool. A lot of those schools are just about empty. So why keep them open? I think this will be a good thing in teh short and long run. | | | |
