What do you do with foreign coins that end up in your wallet? |
| |
| Sometimes I will pull out some change to pay for something - and the cashier will give me a back a coin saying "That's not a nickel" or "dime" or whatever. I think it's Canadian coins that mostly end up with my change (I am in the US). I have a small pile that's building up - not sure what to do with it. I think I might even have a couple tokens in there too that I'm not sure where they're from. What do you do with these foreign coins that sneak into your change pocket? Do you try to pass them on to a store thinking maybe the cashier might not notice . . . or do you honestly give it to them by mistake (they look so similar!)? | | | | | |

| | I normally just toss them out. But,since I have some bills in my scrap book taht come from other places I feel I would now hold on to any coins I will get . Plus if you check ebay they sell really well. | | | | | | |

| | How do you toss them out? Do you mean it goes into the trash? I don't know that I have enough coins to make any sort of collection out of them. That'd be neat to have some foreign bills - but of course that never seems to come by accident. Ebay - really, for coins? They really do have everything there, eh? | | | |

| | I have a friend who gives us coins when she travels - gives them to us like souvenirs. I know I have those "somewhere", but the foreign coins I get by mistake are kind of common (meaning I know I'll get them by mistake again at some point). The coins look very much alike, so they do end up in my wallet - usually because some cashier gave them to me for change and didn't notice either. | | | |

| | If I give them to the store, I do it purely by accident . . . they look so much like our coins! There's no fooling machines that take coins (like clothing washers or dryers) - it won't accept them. Wish I could pass along my coins to you as you have a collection! | | | |

| | When I was employed as a cashier, I often received foreign coins. Sometimes the customer forgot they had it. Out of courtesy we would accept them and take them to the bank. Personally, nothing like that turns up in my pocket or wallet. If it does, I will dispose of it properly :) | | | | | | |

| | Wow - the store you worked for accepted foreign coins out of courtesy? How seriously nice! All the other cashiers literally threw them back at me - hee hee! They actually end up in my rolls of coins FROM THE BANK! So even they make this mistake - I get it this way all the time! | | | |

| | hi! well, I don't have any foreign coins/ in my wallet that often, but when I have some, maybe from the cashier in the store who have given it to me by mistake, i just keep them in it, because I just can't spend them nowhere because in the bank they accept only banknotes and in the stores/shops too :) | | | | | | |

| | I'm sure if you got them, you would have gotten them by mistake from a cashier who didn't see it either. Often they are the same size and thickness as our coins - so many could be overlooked. I know you can't spend these coins in vending machines or others that accept coins . . . not that I "tried", but I have accidentally put them in and it wouldn't accept them. | | | |

| | I usually keep them until I decide that it's silly because I'm never going to go exchange them, so I toss 'em. I know it seems like a waste of money, but it's just not worth driving to somewhere that I can exchange it for only a few cents, or dollars at best. | | | | | | |

| | Do you actually toss them, like in the trash (others in this discussion said the get rid of them too .. . I'm just wondering if that means they throw them away). I don't even know how much they are worth (you figure it can't be that much), but I usually keep them around anyway too. | | | |

| | Really? Wow . . . it just never occurred to me to throw them directly into the trash. Well, I know there are a lot of dumpster divers here . . . perhaps if many people are throwing their foreign coins out, it's possible these dumpster divers are getting to them! | | | |

| | I usually just keep it and add it to my coin collection. I'm not really an avid collector but just collect it for fun. | | | | | | |

| | I wish I could give these coins to you then! I used to stick the special coins in a special piggy bank (shaped like a globe - to keep my "worldly" coins in . . . but I haven't done that in years. | | | |

| | I save them for when my daughter gets to be a bit older. Some of the coins I've collected predate the 1900s. I've had 10 cent pieces smaller than my pinky nail, and I've had 1 cent pieces the size of a small tarantula. I'll study them, hold them.. get a feel for them, and wonder about those places as I know that many of them I will never visit. I've had a Nazi coin once, and I had to stop and think about the Holocaust for a bit. The price that some people had to pay... who held that coin before I did and how did it end up in America? Sometimes when my friends travel, they collect coins and other odd things for me and send them. I have some lira pieces that appear to have Braille on them. I had to stop and ponder why America hasn't done such. I have coins and currency from the Bahamas, Panama, Mexico, Guatamala, the old Soviet Union, Sweden, The Netherlands, Germany, Canada, Belize, Belgium, Austria, Australia, Ireland, the UK, various Carribean Islands. I have one that is from an Asian country that I cannot identify. I keep them in a special box for my daughter so that she might have a memory of how the world once was and to help spark an interest in her for history and other cultures. Even now, she asks me to bring them out from time to time to allow her to examine them and asks questions. | | | | | | |

| | That sounds like an amazing assortment of coins around the world. It would be interesting to hear the stories they could tell . . . where they've been, how they were used - and who used them. I don't think my coins are as interesting as the ones you have, but certainly they must have a history of their own. That's great your daughter has curiosity about these coins! | | | |

| | I put all my foreign coins in a cup. I keep them as a collection as to where I have been. They remind me of all the beautiful places I have been. Hoping to return one day. Maybe I can spend them again .Happy Lotting. Yeah and those cashier always seem to notice. I guess they have built in radars for them. | | | | | | |

| | Sounds like you've done a bit of traveling! I hope you get to spend them again someday too . . . maybe get some other coins for change too! Yah, what is it about cashiers that they know it's a foreign coin? Perhaps it's from handling money a lot - their fingers just feel it! | | | |

| | My mom's japanese and my dad's canadian. I have family in both their countries, so I've gone to visit a couple times and I have quite a few coins left over. I have always had this designated box (a jewelry box-type of box) that was my "coin box." I just saved them in there until the next time I visisted. Now being in college, and amid moving out, I don;t think I'll be going back any time soon. I guess you and I could either just let the coins sit, or give them to a friend who might be visiting that country. :o | | | | | | |

I wish I could give you my Canadian coins - at least someone in your family could use them!! I know mine will just sit! | | | |
