How to travel safe in Mexico?  email this discussion to a friend?

qubuzz (68) 2 years ago

Hi, I came to Monterrey, Mexico for 5 months for my studies, I come from Europe so I want to benefit of this time as much as possible and visit many places. However nowadays regarding last news about drug wars in Mexico and kidnappings, I'm wondering: may I risk traveling by bus, especially by night? What are the cities that I must see and the-ones I should better not go these days? Shall I trust to police? In case of emergency where can I call if not police? Do you think this is really danger to walk alone down a street for a white guy by day? Would you recommend to see Guadalajara and Mexico City these days and during Easter Holidays? And finally is it really so risky all over Mexico, as they say?
I'll appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Never been in Mexico all my life. I wish I could go there. I'm not really sure about the drug thingy and the chaos and all that. Just enjoy the moment and watching the camera roll, is just funny.Don't worry they are also a lot of enjoying mexicans who do that.

Let me give you some facts: since jan 2007 when president Calderon declared war on drug traffickers, estimated number of people who have died in drug related violence passed 10 000. Just last weekened more than 100 people died. Almost daily there are some attacks, extortion and kidnappings. If you don't have to go to Mexico, you better wait. Canada followed US Department by updating warnings against travel to Northern Mexico. However in fact the South is very dangerous as well. Last month a group of hooded armed men stormed a little village in Oaxaca State and killed 13 people including police officers and children.
Furthermore you can not trust to police cause they are mostly corrupted. That's why the president uses help of Army to fight the drug traffickers. You can see military quite often at the streets.

I never though it was this worse. I think that they should do something about it. A lot of people died because of drug trafficking and it's really the main problem there.sadsadsad

I have been in Mexico several times. I was also warned about kidnappings and my niece (where I was staying) wanted me to hire cabs to go everywhere. I thought about it and about the meney I had. No way that I could have as much fun as I wanted if I had to use most of my money in taxis.
Most of the mexicans travel by metro and other public transportation. Why would I be THE one to be kidnapped? I was no movie star, did not look very wealthy. I like to travel but always follow certain rules that are common sense. No jewelry, no lots of cash (that´s what credit cards are for), comfortable clothes ( old jeans and shoes)except if I have to go to a special place that needs formal clothes (but then, that doesn´t happen every day). I went home at the time the rest of the mexicans are going home and preferred to drink at home except if I had company.
Nothing happened. Nothing, except that I had the time of my life every time I visited Mexico. Mexican are very helpful if you know how to ask things nicely.
Ask mexicans (if you know Spanish) or a tourist information center if you don´t) how safe is it to travel at night by bus. I used buses to travel from Mexico to Puebla and back. I went there with a friend and it was already dark when we reached Mexico City. We had bought things in Puebla so we were loaded with bags. No problem.
I want to say that you are wrong if you think that a "white guy" would have problemsrofl. The main reason is that a lot of mexicans are white. Probably your language would show more that you are a visitor. Whoever told you otherwise does not know the country very well. I think you might have problems (and so would many mexicans) if you went to places wholly inhabitated by indians. But tourists usually stay away from that.
Ciudad de Mexico is the biggest city in the world. Bigger than New York, Paris or Rome. And there you can stay weeks and the city will unfold every day in a different way. You can see cultural things from every period, big malls, wonderful churches, you name it. If you have the money, you can eat as well as in any other mayor city in the world. But you can also buy beautiful souvenirs for little money. It´s all there for the asking. Be nice, though, as you would want tourists to behave towards you in your country. Mexicans are proud people as they should be.
Take care and enjoy.happy

Thank you for your comment. In some parts I agree with you, in some of them not.
I think you don't have to be a movie star to be attacked at the street. Some of my friend have been. In fact I already traveled a bit over Mexico and personally nobody attacked me, I just lost my mobile and debit card.
That's true that there are many white Mexicans, but they are not blond! Many people who sees me, calls me 'rubito' - blondie ;) If someone knows english, they start talking to me in english, they think that I can't speak spanish, and I have a lot of money cause I'm from Europe. That's their impression.
To be honest I can tell you that this what's happening right now in Mexico a bit scares me. I want to travel, I want to take my chance being in this country, I am also careful and maybe a bit lucky. However I'm still wondering maybe i should wait with trip to Mexico City.

You are right about attacks on the street (I was talking about kidnapping, ot about normal street mugging). I think any mayor city in the world has people that might steal your purse or even grab your cell phone. There are drug problems in Mexico and violence, but how risky it is depends on where you go.
In Ciudad de Mexico I walked near el Zócalo at daytime and went to museums and churches. My friend is blonde but we had no problems. We even went to markets (so full of colours!) and bought fruit to eat on the way.
But I suppose that if you are afraid, you should wait. Vendors called my friend güerita, but the "ita" or "ito" at the end of the word is nice.
Take care!

I have been to Mexico twice, on a day trip from San Diego and on a long trip to Cancun plus south to Talum. I loved it in sunny Mexico and I found the local people friendly. I would advise you have a money belt and are careful with your valuables. I would advise day bus journeys unless you are sure of the safety of a particular night journey. You might not have any dealing with the police. I suggest you take a Spanish phrase book. If you read a detailed travel guide book you will be able to stay in the safer area in Mexico City. I am sure you will have an excellent time in lovely Mexico.

The point is about traveling night-time by bus. There was a case, in the South, a group stopped a bus in the middle of the road through jungle, they tied the driver, robbed the passengers and raped women. It's different in the north, where you have big deserts, so you can see everything what's going on on the road withing miles, so it's safer. But anyway even Mexicans sometimes prefer just to travel by plane, only for safety purposes.
