Do you pick up hitch-hikers? |
| |
| When you are on the road and you a random guy waiting for car to give him a ride, do you stop and pick him up? For a hitch-hiker if you just drop him half a mile further or at a closest oil station, this is a huge favor and you can make him very happy. However many people don't realize it. They think it can be dangerous to pick-up a stranger. In fact both sides are taking some risk, cause a traveler doesn't know who's in the car, so it might be dangerous for him as well. I think in fact it depends on hitch-hiker, some people pick-up only singles, some people help only women... do you have this kind of rules? Secondly I think it depends on country, for example in Europe is quite easy to travel by hitch-hike, people stop very often and they are very helpful. When I hitch-hiked over Europe I was amazed how people can be helpful and it made me believe in humans good. In some other countries like US, everyone has a car, so it may look strange to wait on a road for a lift. Maybe it might be also more dangerous in fact than in Europe. What are your experiences guys? | | | | | |

| | After many drives over the years, i have never experienced someone asking for a ride. Maybe when someone will ask, i will check if he is a good man or not, of where he is heading, and someone( a gas station attendant for example) other than us must know that this certain man is riding with me to this certain place. I will also probably call by handy a friend/ my bro in law/ or my husband and tell them about this guy riding with me, and the telephone conversation i will make sure the man hears it. So if he plans of something bad ( we can never tell )he knows another person(s) knows of him. That way i will feel safe and maybe he will too. | | | | | | |

| | Thank you for comment tigerlily, I see you are very careful! I suppose the reason is that you have not yet met any hitch-hiker. Regarding my travels in Europe, I was very often very surprised how people can trust and do not take any precautions. It was also fascinating for me! | | | |

| | Honestly I always want to and wish I could. I have a very big, compassionate heart and I love and care about people, including total strangers, BUT... I never do pick up hitchhikers even when I am with my husband bc these days it is just too dangerous. | | | | | | |

| | Hey, I really don't understand your point. During the reading your post, I was wondering that you just have not met yet any hitch-hiker and you are just waiting for this moment to help him! But then you said that you have met already some of them but you decided to not help them. Sorry, but I'm confused... | | | |

| | I used to pick up hitch-hikers but rarely do it now. There are too many crazy people out there that they are ruining it for all the people who depended on this mode of transportation. | | | | | | |

| | In our country, no one will ask for the ride in a car . But , waiting guy in my country may ask for help from two wheeler rider. Some time, the two wheel rider may stop, and it depends on individual in Southern parts of India But , in Northern parts of India many are helping by giving lift to the waiting guy. I used to think of carrying petrol in a bottle and keep it as reserve to help those stranded because of no petrol in their car/two wheelers. Only, one day I did carry and I helped one individual two wheel rider who was moving his vehicle to a Petrol Pump station which is about 2 Kilometers from that spot. Happy Mylotting. | | | | | | |

| | I haven't ever picked up a hitch-hiker...my internal non trust of anyone I dont know just grabs me. If I saw a woman with a kid I would be much more likely to pick them up...but as a girl, I would not feel comfortable picking up a guy. In this day and age, even the woman with a kid could be dangerous! | | | | | | |

| | we have a lot of hitchihikers in this area. I see them almost every time i drive home from town. I never have picked up a hitchhiker. I just do not believe it would be the safest thing to do. I am sure the majority of hitchhikers are nice and harmless, but in this day and age you just never know. For all you know you are picking up a decent looking person, yet they may be a psycho serial killer! you just never know. And yes, it can be scary for the hitchhiker as well. They may be innocent and a crazy person could pick them up, with plans to hurt. So in my opinion it isn't safe to be a hitchhiker, or to pick one up! | | | | | | |

| | Hey, your comment is interesting for me! I'm wondering where do you live? It sounds nice that you have a lot of hitchhikers... seems like good country to visit and travel by hith-hike ;) I think if you once tried to do this, you would change your attitude towards hitchhikers! I remember when I was younger, was also a bit skeptical to picking-up hitchhikers, while my father wanted to help them anytime he could. Until I traveled by hitchhike and then I decided, that when I will have a car and driving somewhere I meet a hitchhiker, I will also help them! Because I know the hitchhiker appreciates every little help and every little more distance overcame is priceless! | | | |

| | it depends on which country you're in...if you're in a country with a hijack zone, you wouldn't want to stop your car for them..for instance in South Africa, there are hijack zones and they really put up the notice on the road..therefore never ever stop your car for anyone | | | | | | |

| | I agree with you, but for example in Europe I think hitch-hiking is safe. This is something amazing, what I love in European culture! | | | |
