Yes, She is. See hailstones coming down as big as tennis balls. Polar caps are melting fast before our eyes. Sea levels are moving up. Flooding is a regular occurrence. And... lately earthquakes that hit Haiti and Chile. Is Mother Earth giving us a message?

Never forget the ravages of Katrina and the typhoons over the Philippines. Let us be serious about our efforts to save Mother Earth. Stop global warming and over-development. Curb our greed to cut down trees and reduce mountains into plains. We have done enough harm. When is enough, enough?

hie, mother earth is revolting due to all the abuses carried out in the name of development and progress. too many developments are on and this has upset the nature of things. results : there are earthquakes in places of non existence earthquakes. more and more calamities are happeniung and in this year, there is an alarming increase of fires of all kinds such as bush fires, houses on fires, earthquakesetc. the damage is done but can man slows down and repair the damage.

We have to pay the piper for now. There is little that we can do actually. We have desecrated the world for too long. We are insane just because we are greedy. Even now, people are still trying their best to rob Mother Earth of its natural flora and fauna. Thee way things are going, it looks like an impending Armageddon.

Miracles are possible and the miracle here is individual awareness. What can an individual do?. There is plenty that an individual can do. It is right there in everyone’s house. One does not need to go far. Consume just enough water, Close the taps when not in use, repair the running/leaking taps, put off lights when not in use. cook just enough for the family and not to feed the garbage bin, store what is needed. Hoarding is a crime, go slow on electronics, buy only if the need is great, have a car pooling system, do not splurge on celebrations, teach children the value of conservation be it energy, water and other resource. What is the relationship between this and climate change one might ask. There is a cascading effect leading to reduction in global warming and less global warming will result in a sobre attitude of weather where it will go back to its old systematic habit being seasonal, raining at the right time, sunshine at the right time – what more can one ask for?

myLot reputation of 97/100. jonjee0203 (4680)  2 years ago

True, let us start at the individual level while governments agree and disagree in the world caucuses.Even the Kyoto Protocol has yet to see agreement on cutting down CO2 emissions.Meanwhile, as you suggest let us do out best on own own to save Mother Earth. Recycle, reuse, reduce-that is what we can do.

myLot reputation of 94/100. allknowing (5155)  2 years ago

As I said jonjee only a miracle can save mother earth and that miracle is individual awareness!happy

patman2nv (1)   ranked 3 out of 3 in weather turbulence  2 years ago

Hi, I am with you on this subject. It is definitely the only way to make a difference in the big picture and a lot of people dont see the value of reduce recyle or re-use because they cant see that is a cumulative problem. If everyone switched over to direct deposit and E-statements for thier banking it would save millions of trees per year plus all the fuel consumed to process the paper and deliver the statements to thier homes. It may not seem like much for one person to do but the point is that if everyone does it it will have a huge impact and that is what it is all about.

As somehow mentioned in Al Gore's "The Inconvenient Truth," it seems like we humans wouldn't learn until we really get punished hard. Al Gore showed an animation of a frog in water. When it heated up, he immediately realizes it and jumps out. In relation to humans, there was another animation where a frog was in water. It heated up, but he ignored it. He just stayed in it while it's burning hot. Most people don't realize Global Warming and that is so sad. Mother earth sure is trying to get back. Moreover, most of the activities of man that destroys nature is coming and biting back.

I think really intensive Global Warming awareness campaigns must be done...although I think environmentalists are trying as best as they could but people are just stubborn. I am from the Philippines. Thankfully, our house was not flooded but I was out of the house and the terrible typhoons didn't make it easy for me to get back home with strong winds, heavy rains, and flooded areas. It took me 5 hours to get home while my friend got stuck at the metro rail station (opposite of subways, something like the "above the road" train tracks of new york). After the typhoons, I still see people relentlessly throw garbage on the road (Yes, unfortunately, people here have no discipline when it comes to garbage disposal. People would throw anything from candy wrappers, water bottles, to fastfood styrofoam packages) sad I really want to scold them or something. They really don't learn their lesson and I hope mother nature bites back at them...only them who don't give a care about the earth.

myLot reputation of 97/100. jonjee0203 (4680)  2 years ago

Yes, it is tougher in Third World countries where solid waste disposal is not well developed. The people should also be taught the pitfalls of throwing rubbish all around. Public awareness campaigns especially in the barrios and slums should be increased so that when a typhoon hits, post management issues can be resolved quite quickly. I do hope the typhoons will not attack the Philippines too much. It is not good for the nation and the economy.

When we 'catch' a virus or a 'bug', such as a cold, the 'flu or other more serious diseases, our bodies react by creating antibodies and changing the conditions to control those bugs. When we have a cold, the sneezing, the runny nose and the fever are not really due to the virus but our body's active reaction to it and a natural process in restoring the balance.

Our bodies contain many bacteria (and viruses) which live in symbiosis with us. They don't make us sick and some of them actually are necessary (and we might get sick if we weren't hosts to them ... an example is the bacteria in our stomachs and intestines which help us digest our food).

Also, not all coughs, sneezes and fevers are due to viruses. Sometimes I cough because of smoke, sneeze because I have smelt pepper or get a fever because it is simply too darned hot!

'Mother Earth' or 'Gaiea' as some people like to call this ball of rock surrounded by an atmosphere is, in a certain sense, a living organism composed of many different forms of life. Humans are just one of these symbiotic organisms of Gaiea and, because of our activities, can sometimes influence the way that She behaves. Not every cough and sneeze and fever she displays, however, is due to us. I don't think that (at the moment) you can blame earthquakes or volcanoes on human activity but, to a certain extent, we can hold ourselves responsible for an imbalance of carbon dioxide and other gases which affects our atmosphere and therefore the weather.

Even before humans arrived on Earth, there were earthquakes, volcanoes, periods of excessive warmth and cold and many other disturbances to the rather narrow set of conditions which we call 'viable'. On the other hand, other organisms might consider what we call 'equable' to be too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry, too oxygenated or whatever.

We are really very presumptive to consider ourselves the acme and final version of life on our planet. We are not really very adaptable and have not been around for very long - just the wink of an eye in terms of the age of the Earth. We pride ourselves on our ability to think and communicate but we really know very little about the way other organisms think and communicate because we tend to look at everything else in terms of the way we do things (and we have imagined ourselves a 'God' who is essentially 'human').

The Earth ('Gaiea') is sending us messages all the time. It is us who tends to misinterpret and mishear the messages (if we hear them at all). Humanity is really sick. We are a growth that has gone wrong and may even be out of control as far as our host, the Earth, is concerned.

Wow owlwings, that is really well thought and well expressed opinion on this matter! I take "Even before humans arrived on Earth, there were earthquakes.." and "we reallly know very little bout the way other organisms think and communicate", and the last sentence. thumbup

True, Mother Earth has been sending signals. Now it is showing symptoms. so if we do not heed these, doom will come by and by. Even now, we are experiencing extreme heat, water bodies are drying up and cyclone, tornadoes and typhoons beat on our people, ravaging life and property. So, let us take heed and do what we can . We can pressure our governments to do the needful for Mother Earth. They owe the people for the good life to lead the nation. They must think of the next generation.

ya i too feel the same.
we did many harms to mother nature and i think that she lost her patience and mercy on us because of our deeds.
global warming.............melting polar ice caps
pollution through vehicles..............ozone layer depletion
excess co2 into atmosphere from industries...............climatic disturbances like tornadoes and cyclones
and what next???

myLot reputation of 97/100. jonjee0203 (4680)  2 years ago

We feel the pain when our rivers are polluted. We see water levels rising and flooding coastal towns. God and Mother Earth has given the early warning signals. Let us respond positively to preserving nature and look at sustainable development for humanity and progress.

Hi jonjee, there can be many factors for our mother earth behaving like this. As owlwings pointed out, there are other planets and their moons that have earthquakes and volcanoes, and storms, so we cant be solely responsible. And such calamities have been there in the past as well, so I cant really blame us entirely. There may also be something in relation to the sun. May be we are moving closer fractionally, because of which ice caps are melting. Or it may be something due to some cosmic phenomenon, which occurs once in ten thousand years, and we are just witnessing it. There may be no previous record of it because nobody knew how to write! Its too early to blame it on our habits alone. Having said that, I love trees, and I hate it when people fell them, and I do realize the bad effects of plastic bags. So those two definitely need to be addressed.

myLot reputation of 97/100. jonjee0203 (4680)  2 years ago

Whatever it is, we have caused Mother Earth problems and revenge is on the cards. The various natural calamities is early warning signals. Do more harm to Mother Earth and you and your generation will pay dearly. It could possibly be irreversible!

See hailstones coming down as big as tennis balls.
Nothing unusual, our midwest sees this all the time, always has, some even get the size of softballs in the bigger thunderstorms.

Polar caps are melting fast before our eyes.
Actually, no they're not, common misconception. They melt a bit and refreeze again in seasonal fashion, nothing unsusal.

Sea levels are moving up.
There is no data at all that demonstrates any signifigant increase in sea levels world wide.

Flooding is a regular occurrence.
Yes, it is...again, always has been, whats so unusual about it?

And... lately earthquakes that hit Haiti and Chile
And what exactly has that got to do with weather or global warming? Now your talking about something COMPLETELY different that humans have no power over or effect on, nor is there any signifigant increase in earth quake activity world wide..it's just earth doing what earth does.

myLot reputation of 86/100. owlwings (12358)  2 years ago

You are wrong about the polar ice, xfahctor. It is currently diminishing at a faster rate than at any time since reliable recording began: http://www.timesonline.co...

What is more worrying is that permanent ice caps all over the world are diminishing at an alarming rate. This varies according to location and altitude. It seems that, in the Alps, permanent ice above 4200 feet has remained virtually stable for the last 100 years at least, even though, at lower elevations, glaciers are very definitely melting: http://www.sciencedaily.c...

There is convincing and positive evidence for global warming which coincides with our increased use of fossil hydrocarbons. Whether the two events are linked or genuinely coincidental is, it is true, in dispute but it is, nevertheless, clear that it is irresponsible of us to use so much fossil fuel because:

a) If we profligately build a society based on the use of fossil fuel, our descendants will not be able to maintain it.

b) Whether or not our output of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases is solely responsible for global warming, it is indisputably a factor and, since it is something over which we do have control, it follows that we should take steps to reduce our output and to make sure that some of the primary ways in which carbon is removed from the atmosphere (the forests which we have cut down) are restored.

myLot reputation of 83/100. xfahctor (7620)  2 years ago

Yes, Co2 is a factor and humans are a factor in producing Co2. However, the ammount of Co2 humans contribute is nominal, to the order of 10ths of a percentage on the overall ammount. Also, as a green house gas, Co2 is not very efficiant. If this were the case, terraforing Mars would be as simple as nuking the polar caps and letting nature take it's course. This is one of the problems with the AGW perponents, they focus almost entirely on Co2 as the demon when in fact it is a very marginal factor.

As to the ice cap notion and the (old) articles you linked. One cannot look at two glaciers and use the data as a blanket application. I took a look at the most recent data on the artic and antarctic ice data. Here:
http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/

I'm not saying climate change doesn't happen or isn't happening, or even that humans aren't contributing to it in some marginal way. But the fact remains, even among the consensus of the general science community how it is changing, how much or what the specific causes are. I spens a great deal of time in a science forum, reading work from actual scientists and there simply is no broad consensus as to any of it.

Side note:
I absolutely CRING when I see people put seismic activity in to the mix. That is not only bad science...it is plain rediculous, I have to call it out when I see it. I also cringe when I see people toss ordinary weather phenomena out as evidence of AGW, it doesn't help the cause at all, any more than someone pointing out a rough winter as evidence against it. Those two things were what promted me to respond to this thread in the first place

myLot reputation of 95/100. mysdianait (20627)  2 years ago

I have not studied the sciences and I am absolutely ignorant in any of the terminology used by both of you here but may I ask a question as an onlooker?

We have covered enormous areas of the Earth with concrete and tarmac causing the rain to be diverted elswhere.
We have pumped out from deep down under the soil bilions and billions of barrels of petrol.

Surely both of these things have caused discrepancies in the Earth's crust and might be the reason for an increase in earthquakes? Yet another in Cuba tonight doh

myLot reputation of 83/100. xfahctor (7620)  2 years ago

Dianna, there is almost no impact we could have on the earths crust. The ammount we have manipulated in drilling and building is almost not even noticable on the more global scale, it would be the euqivelent of a microscopic mosquito biting a dinosaur. The forces and energy at work that run the siesmic activity of the planet are unimaginably powerfull and there is no way we puny humans can have an effect on it. Even our largest nuclear weapons, though they can shake the ground localy itself when they go off, have no effect on the earths crust or the continental plates.

You are absolutely right. What's happening now with our environment, the weather, climate temperature, the catastrophic extent of a weather/climate disturbance are all but the result of man's greed, folly and lack of concern to Mother Nature and natural surroundings. If you're old enough to compare the climate change of say, 50 years ago, you'll surely feel that the sun's heat of today is almost unbearable and searing; the cold weather is almost always close to freezing. Forest and rivers are gone together with the wild animals, birds and fishes that make them their habitat. Most of these beautiful creatures are gone or reduced to the point of extinction. Flash floods are everywhere where before you never dreamed that it would occur in your locality - all because of indiscriminate garbage disposal, deforestation and irresponsible destruction of natural terrain. We can only sigh unless we do something about it NOW! The solution to all these is to start with each and everyone of us - our self-awareness of our environment, its preservation and in our own small way help make people contribute and respond to rehabilitate and care for Mother Nature not just for us but for generations to come.
