Who are your favorite Canadian Artist/band?  

OMG I'm so blasphemous, How can i forget about the great Sarah McLachlan, she was one of the greatest singer song writer ever. her songs "adia" and "angels" were freaking awesome.

Oohh Sarah McLauglin (sp) is FABULOUS..but I have to admit I'm probably one of the FEW Canadians who CAN'T STAND the Hip...they drive me batty!!

Oh I just forgot to Include Nelly Furtado, I use to love her during her folk days but I didnt like her new "promiscuous girl image"

Though I'm not a Fan of Celine Dion, i do agree she was one of the most iconic Canadian singers.

I really hate the fact that when you say Canadian band, the 1st thing that came into people's mind is Nickelback, there are so many bands in canada that was much better than Nickelback.

lol...actually the first band I thought of was the Hip. Especialy for those in Ontario, they're the home town boyz from Kingston and to me..they really represent Canada.

I haven't heard about that band before, What is their genre and what is their signature song? I think I'm interested to know more of them. Since my knowledge with Canadian music was still kinda limited.

Musicly I would put them in the vein of a college alternative indie band. they sound a bit like REM actually. Here are two of my favorites

The 1st song was very chilly, its perfect for a long drive to a very far town and it reminds me a bit of new wave.The song has something historic on it buts hard to find it in my memory. Its interesting that they were able to make a song about Bill Barilko. So they love incorporating history with their songs.

Yeh, a lot of their music is based on real events and people in Ontario. Thats one of the things I really like about them. They write things that are relevent and real to the audience they have, everything from personal anecdotes, to stories of importance to Ontarians. Another song they did talks about the Bobcaygeon riots a few decades ago. another was about a freind of theirs who killed a guy for raping his sister, he was sentenced to life in prison but escaped and went home before being caught again. Simple important things like that.

Using events is also another good way of song writing aside from using personal experiences. I think people feel the emotions from the vents used and those events were in deed relevant to history. the narrative was great and I cant blame you for liking them. Were they able to penetrate the US market?

No, they got some very limited play and fame here, but were never widely known to the american audience. Somehow I don't think it bothered them much though. They seem like a band that is in it for the music rather than the fame.

To give respect to Nickelback, I know they were the most famous Canadian act of our time. They just help opening doors to some Canadian bands who wants to be big in the US.

I haven't heard about them but I will try checking it out and see what music they do.

Rush, Kim Mitchell and The Guess Who would be considered "classic rock" today I guess..they were all popular in the 70s and 80s LOL
