I am using Word 2003 for my story and after writing 10 pages it did three things I did not want:

1. single space instead of double.

2. said the first word of every line should be capitalized, even if it was in the middle of a sentence. and

3. Would not indent for a new paragraph.

I got the first two problems solved, but it still will not indent for a new paragraph. Though compared to the other problems, this one is not a big deal, I just have to do it manuelly each time. But if there is soemthing I can do short of downloading openoffice, please let me know what..Thanks..

Word can be weired like that. Sometimes it takes several times of doing it manually for word to figure out what you're trying to do, to pick up on your patteren. I used to do the same thing and it took several times for word to pick up on my tabbing habbits. If your document nears completion and you still have to manually tab, try restarting word again.

I like word too. I use it for just about everything myself.

Well I am not near completion, but will continue to manuelly correct it and hope it straightens out, thanks kayla..:)

Instead of downloading open office I have another suggestion. I have a manual from my office 2003 class that will give you the information you need for using Word. I think I might also have a text from using the 2003 Word program. They are really simply written and have helped me a LOT with using word. If you would like them let me know and I'll ship them to you. They would be great reference books for helping you with problems with word.

Oh bless you loverbear, are you sure you don't need them? That would help a lot, since I am using word more now than ever since I started writing. What can I do to help you with expenses?

All of these suggest that you have either lost or changed your stylesheet. If you were using Normal.dot as your stylesheet (it's the default) then you may have inadvertently edited it by changing some settings and hitting the 'Default' button.

It makes a great deal of sense to have separate stylesheets for each kind of job you do (in fact it is recommended practice and something which every Word user should be familiar with).

If you need to have double spaced body text and indents for each paragraph for all your story writing, you simply create a stylesheet named (for example) Story and make sure that you create paragraph styles which are double spaced and with first line indents. You might also create heading styles and other styles to deal with quotations, poetry, headers, footers, footnotes and whatever other special styles you need.

The reason that the first character of every line is capitalised can only be that you are pressing Return to start a new line instead of letting text wrap (you should only press Return to create a new paragraph). I can't think of any setting in Word 2003 which would capitalise the start of a new line unless you are treating the page as if you were using an old-fashioned typewriter where you had to use the carriage return lever to make a new line. However, you say that you have solved that problem.

If you weren't aware of stylesheets, that is something that you would do well to read up on and learn to apply.

That is why loverbear is offering me her manuels, but thanks for the info. I never changed from my first story or what I did on my first ten pages of my second one, so I may have accidentally done something without knowing what..

It is always a good idea, especially when doing a great deal of editing in a document, to save the document periodically. Until you save the file, Word holds all of the edits in RAM and can sometimes behave unpredictably when the document is large with a lot of unsaved edits. I have had occasions when Word became unworkably slow and even gave out of memory messages with a large document and a PC with very little RAM. The solution was always to save the document, wait until the memory was cleared (or even to close Word, restart it and re-open the document) and continue. Ctrl-S is one of the most useful hot keys in Word. Use it routinely about every 10 or 15 minutes (depending on how fast you type).

I'd accept Loverbear's offer gratefully! It is a pain, I know, to have to relearn some things about a package which you have been using quite happily for ages. Stylesheets are not, I have found, the easiest thing to get one's head around but, believe me, once you do you will wonder why you didn't use them before!

Most people who are self-taught in Word have no idea that they exist (or that everyone uses them without realising). Nearly all new documents are based on the default stylesheet, normal.dot, and if you start typing a letter, change some formatting and hit that 'Default' button on the Format dialog, you have changed something in normal.dot and when you go back to a previous document you suddenly find that something has changed!

I not only save it every few lines, but I save it on my flash drive so whatever happens, it is safe. As for taking loverbear up on her offer, oh yes, I will, thanks owlwings..

Making frequent backups on a flash drive is very good practice however, you should NOT open the file from the flash drive because (a) a flash drive can be slower than a hard disk, (b) Word uses the folder that the file is stored in to create temporary files so is constantly writing to disk as you edit and (c) flash drives have a limited life defined by the number of write operations (several million usually but each write operation done by Word as you edit the file counts and can significantly shorten the life of a flash drive).

The best practice is to create the file on the hard disk and, at the end of a writing or editing session, to copy the file to your flash drive (overwriting any previous versions if you wish, though some people like to keep previous versions by giving each version its own file name according to some system). When you want to use the file again, copy the latest version from the flash drive to your working area on the hard disk and open it from there.

I have found that, although flash drives are far more reliable (and store much more data) than the old floppy disk, when they do fail, they do so without warning and dramatically. Whereas a floppy will often give indications that it is about to turn its toes to the sky and, when it does, it is nearly always possible to retrieve at least some of the data, a flash drive simply dies without warning and all the data on it becomes inaccessible. The moral is: Treat your media with respect; understand the limitations and NEVER trust any one media type implicitly!
