Aren't They Flimsy These Days?  

Think about it, if they made them and they lasted a long time the people that make them wouldnt make as much money as they do by selling us ones as you describe.
The manufacturers are not short changing us, but they sure do know how to rip us off for a product they know they will sell well.
Actually, here in the UK I dont think the British Gentleman really uses a brolly that much these days.

If just used for rain, and umbrella will last, but I live in Kansas, and we have tons of wind. I know that it is easy for an umbrella to turn wrong side out in no time at all. Nothing is as well made as it used to be, and that seems to be what an economy runs on, replacement of items.

The modern umbrellas are a fashion statement. The idea is to make them look beautiful but not usable! The old umbrellas were sturdy and if you remember they were the crudest thing on earth. It is the customer ultimately decides which one to go for. We still see those crude umbrellas around and it is left to you to make your choice.

Yes, I think the umbrellas are very flimsy these days. I have two like that. I have a very long driveway and when I walk to my mailbox when it's raining and the wind is really strong, my umbrella just folds up in the strong wind. It's aggravating, too. You still get wet no matter what. Kathy.

No, they don't short-change us. The umbrellas are built not to last. The reasons are:
1. Consumers want lighter umbrellas, resulting in thinner frames.
2. Consumers want cheaper umbrellas, resulting in cutting cost. Hence, thinner frames.
3. Price wars among manufacturers.
