In my country the Tulsi (Basil) plant is considered a holy plant and it plays a major role in the hindu rituals. In every hindu home one can see a pot containing this holy plant in the courtyard, balcony, roof top.Black tulsi is prefered over the green variety. Usually the ladies of our home light a ghee-lamp at its base and show insense sticks in the morning and evening. If space permits, one should go round this plant chanting specific hymns. Its leaves are not plucked in evening or at night, also on Tuesday, Friday and on certain days of hindu calander. While plucking also one need to recite hymns.
When we visit temples, we are given 'holy' water, its main ingredient is Tulsi leaves, it has medicinal properties. My father used to keep a Tulsi leaf behind his ears, now i learn, why, the most powerful point of absorption in human body is right behind the ears.
A friend who had a world tour told me that, in some country he heard about 'clustered water' , sort of pure water. This prevents pollution. Two drops of this water added to glassful of ordinary water is a health-drink. It is now found that Tulsi water has same effect. Dr T P Sasikumar collected the Tulsi water used to bathe an idol in temples and hindu homes. He found that this water has same property as clusterd water.
I hope this information is useful to all. What is your view on this, do you keep Tulsi plant at home, just keep and enjoy good health.

Thulasi leaves are very sacred. In our house we buy thulasi everyday and keep for he idol Lord Rama. On festival days, we put thulasi leaves in the sacred water before God in the Pooja and use it as theertham and offer all family members.

Hello sir,
Indians are much familiar with this Tulsi (Basil)
. It is used for rituals in temples and also known for its medicinal value. Tulsi leaves can cure many disease and pure the air if we planted the plants around the house. According to Hindu mythology, tulsi plant is considered as Goddess of Lakshmi that is the reason for not plucking it leaves in night and chanting mantra is essential at the time of plucking. Tulsi plants are available in every home in our native place.

Hi Professor! This is a very interesting bit of knowledge! I
had no idea that the Basil plant was a holy plant! I know that
we here in the US use it as an herb for cooking! I didn't
know that it had medicinal qualities or any other purposes! I
appreciate this information! I will check this out and maybe
buy myself a Basil plant to have in my house too! Thank you
for this information! I just need to check if it isn't poisonous
for cats to be around since I have to cats who are always into
everything! I will check it out on the Web!

I never knew any of the things that you've just shared about basil. It shows just how little I really do know in the grand scheme of things. We use a lot of fresh basil and dried basil in our culinary preparations here, but I didn't know that there were a lot of very healthy benefits to using it. Additionally, I didn't know that it was considered to be a holy plant for the Hindu religion. Thank you very much for teaching me something new.

Black tulsi has many medicinal properties, supposed to be very good for cough and cold.I remember using the juice of the leaves with honey when my children had cough and cold...I too have a tulsi plant in my garden with a proper structure for it...I think every hindu household normally has a tulsi plant...
