NBA regular season awards. Who's your picks? |
| |
| With the end of the regular season approaches, there are some names that surfaced to win the several NBA regular season awards. Here are my picks for the different awards. MVP - My MVP pick is LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers. James has been dominating the once again and for the second straight year, he will be the NBA's best player. Statistically, James is a beast. He is averaging 29.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 8.6 assists, 1.68 steals, and 1.03 blocks per game. He leads the NBA in scoring for the 2009-2010 season though Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant is a very close second. Apart from his statistics, James have led the Cavaliers into the best record in the NBA for the 2009-2010 season. Though there are still a few games left, the Cavaliers are a few games over the defending champions Los Angeles Lakers for the best record for the season. James is simply the heart and soul of the Cleveland Cavaliers and being the heart and soul of the best team for the season, he deserves a citation as the best player. ROY - It's a close call but I'd give it to Tyreke Evans. Though playing for the lowly Sacramento Kings, Evans has been consistent all season long. I used to pick Brandon Jennings after his explosive start for the season but it's Evans consistency that places him on top the first year players. Evans is averaging 20.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and 1.5 steals per game as the Kings starting point guard. Stephen Curry is a very close second to me. Curry have started to assume leadership roles in Golden State and his statistics are improving month after month. So far, Curry is posting good numbers, 16.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game for the Warriors who are keeping a small number of players and playing high octane basketball. Curry's impressive showing just came in 2010 which still gives Evans the edge. 6th Man - It's Jamal Crawford of the Atlanta Hawks for me. The Hawks are making a very solid playoffs run and Crawford has been a very important instrument to it. Crawford gives the Hawks a better reputation than last season and provides instant spark of the bench, kinda reminded me of John Starks of the New York Knicks during the late 90's. Crawford is averaging 17.7 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists in 30.9 minutes per game and most of it coming off the bench. This is Crawford's first season to get past the regular season and he could do it with a bang by bringing home the 6th man award. MIP - The Most Improved Player award is a little bit tough but of all deserving players, I'd pick Aaron Brooks of the Houston Rockets. Why Brooks over considerable candidates like Chris Kaman, Carl Landry, and Brook Lopez? Each of these players have dramatically improved but Brooks is the only player in the list that is playing for a team that is above .500 and could end the season in that note. It's uncertain whether the Rockets could still salvage their season and sneak into the playoffs but it's Brooks who assumed the leadership role for the Rockets in the absence of Yao Ming and the departure of Tracy McGrady. Brooks is averaging 19.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 5.2 assists for the Rockets this season from 11.2 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists for the 2008-09 season. Defensive Player of the Year - It's a lock for Dwight Howard. Howard remained the cornerstone of the Orlando Magic despite the presence of Vince Carter and it's Howard's intimidating presence in the paint that makes the Magic one of the highly reputable defensive teams for the 2009-2010 season. Howard is averaging 18.6 points, 13.3 rebounds, 2.74 rebounds, and 1.0 steal per game. He leads the NBA for the 2009-2010 season in rebounding and blocks. Howard is a workhorse on defense and his size coupled with a good athleticism makes him one of the feared and highly respected lane operators on defense. Who are your picks? | | | | | |

| | That was a great forecast of who may be awarded those accolades in the NBA. I don't have much to say in your picking Lebron James because he led his team to the most wins this season. There is just a different player that I chose in the MIP or Most Improved Player. I would like to choose Rajon Rondo of the Boston Celtics. A lot of times, he carried his team to win games. He had improved a lot and without him, the Boston Celtics will never be where they are now. | | | | | | |

| | I think Rajon Rondo was equally impressive during last year's playoffs when Kevin Garnett was sidelined with an injury. Rondo just narrowly missed averaging a triple-double after 2 playoffs series. But I strongly agree that he's one of the top players Boston have right now, even more important than some of the big 3. | | | |

| | MVP - Same, most probably Lebron James, unless something drastically wrong happens to the Cavs. I guess this can't be argued much. ROY - Same, Tyreke Evans has been a revelation. The fact that Sacramento has parted ways with long time "face of the franchise" Kevin Martin is a testament to how Sac town values Tyreke. 6th man - Lamar Odom. He plays an integral core part for the Lakers. The main man off the bench for the defending World Champs. MIP - I'd go Chris Kaman, to be able to play in the All Star show his pedigree as a center in the West. Defensive Player of the Year - Same. Dwight Howard. Period. | | | | | | |

| | I forgot about the Coach of the Year, and yeah, Oklahoma City's Scott Brooks gets my pick. Brooks have turned the Thunder into a playoff contending team with a very young roster. Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook flourished under Brooks' mentorship and it's just so surprising to see the Thunder go and win as much as 50 games this season. Phoenix's Alvin Gentry and Milwaukee's Scott Skiles are also some close calls. Gentry made the Suns into a much formidable and transparent team. With the limited and aging roster he have, Gentry made the Suns into a respectably good defensive team which accounts a lot for the Suns sudden surge after the All-Star break and even made it to the number 3 spot in the West. Skiles on the other hand made Milwaukee a serious threat in the East. Though unfortunately Andrew Bogut is sidelined for the playoffs which hampered the Bucks' chances in the playoffs, bringing Milwaukee back to the playoffs is a great achievement for Skiles considering that the Bucks doesn't have any All-Star caliber player at the start of the season. Bogut had a great season and 10th overall draft pick Brandon Jennings is just simply sensational. Another thing to consider about Skiles is the acquisition of John Salmons from Chicago. The Bucks virtually added a reputable scorer in Salmons and should Bogut be present in the playoffs, it gives the Bucks a solid chance of barging into the second round. | | | |

| | I also give credit to both Alvin Gentry and Scott Skiles. Alvin Gentry has really shown how big a mistake it was having Terry Porter as Head Coach. The Phoenix Suns have surprised a lot of people this season but not me as I knew what a good team they are. Scott Skiles was always a coach I had respect for and he has shown this season what a good coach he is. Milwaukee Bucks have a had a good season and he has shown great leadership to the young players and the signing of John Salmons has really done wonders for their team. | | | |
