earthquake hits Baja, Ca. | | | | http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_baja_earthquake Praying for the west coast. I just saw this when I signed out of yahoo tonight and it reminded me of a post I have been meaning to start. Though I live in Ohio, I recently heard that we are on a fault ourselves and that we can experience an earthquake as well. But, because we don't experience them like California does, we are not taught on what to do when an earthquake hits. So how does one prepare themselves for an earthquake and what does one do when one strikes? | | | | | | | | | | BlackBerry® Official Site Stay in touch with the people and information that matter most. | | This has to be a record for earthquakes in a year in such a short period of time. I'm gratefull that where I live earthquakes don't happen. However, I'm beginning to believe they can actually happen anywhere at anytime. So I guess I should learn how to prepare for one. Especially since I'm moving to Puerto Rico once I sell my home. They have earthquakes there too. I will have to learn what exactly to do in case. | | | | | | | carmelanirel (12208)

| | Yes, this is what concerns me, is that they are happening more and more and then to find out I do live near a fault line and I have no idea on how to prepare or what to do. Only things I know about are tornadoes and thunderstorms. | | | | | | | BlackBerry® Official Site Stay in touch with the people and information that matter most. BlackBerry.com | add comment | | | |

| | Ahh, I can fill you in, especially since I went through the Paso Robles California earthquake in 2003 (If I remember right). First, when an earthquake hits, get into a door way immediately. (It may be a rough trip. I was sitting in a chair and when the quake hit I was tossed across the room with the chair on top of me!) If you can't get to a doorway, get under a sturdy table. Don't race outside because of the chance of falling debris. If you're outside stay away from power lines, buildings, trees and other tall structures that could fall on you. After the quake, expect that you might not have power. Also DON'T use gas appliances until you are sure that they don't have any leaks. Nothing worse than surviving an earthquake and blowing up your house with a gas leak! Also expect to not have water either. So, have enough bottled water for several days. Also have canned food, blankets, a battery powered radio, emergency telephone (cell phone) first aid kit and a camp stove with sufficient cooking fuel for several days. Also have a propane camping light handy too (don't forget to have matches or a fire lighter to light the stove and light. Also don't use the camp stove in the house because of the chance of explosion and carbon monoxide poisoning.) Also have food and water for your pets with your survival kit. If you live near or on a fault line use quake wax to secure your valuable keepsakes on the shelves and walls. Nothing is worse than to have your collectibles and valuable keepsakes flying through the air. I was on the floor with the TV coming at me at a terrific rate of speed. Fortunately I got my arm out of the way and the floor came up to meet the television and eased it to the floor. I was about a mile from the epicenter of the quake and was so lucky that I didn't have extensive damage to my home and belongings. My first few quakes were rather unnerving but after awhile they didn't bother me anymore. Hope I've been some help. Since I live in California I have gotten pretty educated about quakes and preparation. | | | | | | | carmelanirel (12208)

| | Wow, that sounds so scary and as for quake wax, that is something I'd probably have to get online since the local stores won't carry it. And you said in the doorway? Our home is not built very well, I wonder if that would be safe. Though I guess under our pedestal for our water bed, (not longer a water bed, but we kept the bottom) might be sturdy enough? | | | | Loverbear (2354)

| | Waterbeds were built to withstand a lot of weight, so you should be okay under it. The main thing is to be under a sturdy enough structure so that the debris doesn't fall on your head, killing you. Not to scare you, but you probably have had minor adjustment quakes there. The earth is composed of various "Plates" that shift periodically. As long as there are minor adjustment shifts there shouldn't be a major quake. We, in California, (at least my area) have had small quakes adjusting for the shifting of other plates. So, don't be to worried about having one in your area. If you want to check on the earthquake actions etc, go to USGS.gov (it might be .com I'm not sure). It's for the United States Geological Service, which charts the various quakes and their intensity. | | | | | | | 3 Day Earthquake Kit Earthquakes can happen anytime. Get prepared-Get a kit! | | I was always told to stand in a doorway, supposed to be more reinforced part of a building. Other than that I don't know. I wouldn't drive a car out there, I've seen too many highways colapse. I think praying for them is a good idea. | | | | | | | carmelanirel (12208)

| | Like I said in the reply above you, I wonder if getting under our bed would be safer. Our home is not built well, I wouldn't trust it in a tornado and fortunately I have never had the chance to find out either.. | | | | writersedge (7230)

| | I'm answering off my email. I suppose it depends on the bed. I don't think under my bed would be safer. | | | | | | | Top 5 Cell Phones Find the Top Rated Cellphones, Smart Phones & Plan Rates of the Year. www.mobilegazettes.com | add comment | | | |

| | as a Californian for years you need to stock up on water, flashlights and batteries, canned foods, matches just common sense items you would stock up on for tornadoes or blizzards or any natural catastrophe, even blizzards need us to be prepared as you may not be able to buy things until the roads are open. they suggest extra sandals as you may lose your shoes in a bad quake and need to protect your feet from being cut, and radios using batteries I suppose cell phones and whatever the heck you need to keepthem going, I am an avid cellphone hater myself. but just use common sense, figure out what you would need say you were cut off from water and electric and gas services, foods you could store and always have several hand can openers on hand. the little things we use every day and take so forgranted flash lights for one thing. when one hits get u nder a heavy table if you can and do not run out into the street where you could get clobbered by falling heavy debris. online there are place s that tell you extensively what you should stock up on for quake emergency. but I have listed what I know. lol lol lol | | | | | | | carmelanirel (12208)

| | Thanks Hatley, I may go online and search for a good list to save. Though I understand the part about the shoes, but wouldn't it be better to have water shoes than sandals? Because sandals can come off your feet easy too, even the ones with the straps.. | | | | Hatley (48747)

| | hi carmelanirel yes indeed I think you have a point as a lot of sandals are more like the flip flops people wear at the beaches. You do want to protect your feet as you may have to walk through a lot of rubble, good idea. | | | | | | | California Pricing & Info California Info, Photos, More!
