| Is it a must for computer users, internet explores and surfers to be a touch typist? I once found a software through a search engine site which you can download. I'm not sure how much it really works. I, myself is not actually a fast typists and neither a touch typist. But according to the software that I found out, after two weeks of study and training, you can be able to type without looking at the keyboard. I forgot the software's name. But I'm just wondering if it can really be a big help to us, users. What can a touch typist do and what is the benefit of being one? Can it be consider as a special skill? | | | | | |

| | Actually, there's not much difference between a touch typist and a regular typist. I'm a "touch typist" since I can type fast without looking at the keyboard, probably because I've been using the computer ever since I was a little kid and I got used to it. The only benefits is that you can type while reading what you are typing, or while you're looking somewhere else. Lol. For example, if you're chatting with a friend while watching TV, it'll be much easier for you to multi-task if you're a touch typist. However, being a touch typist isn't really necessary. I don't consider it much of a skill, though. Actually I didn't even know that you call someone who can type without looking at the keyboard a "touch typist". Lol. I don't find anything special about it. And quite frankly, anyone can be a touch typist if they regularly use the computer (or if they're addicted to it like me). | | | | | | |

| | I think regular typist are touch typist. Because its a proper way to type. Is by feel. Even in books how to type properly your fingers need to memories the key and the board. | | | |

| | Everyone cannot be a touch typist. To develop a skill in touch typing you would need some training, which might take few months and not just few weeks. If anyone claims that you can learn typing in two weeks then they are promising too much. Touch typing has its own advantages. It can help you to finish your work faster. You are likely to make fewer mistakes. | | | | | | |

| | The term 'touch typing' actually came out when there was still the regular old fashioned typewriters around. With the old typewriters, you used to actually have to hit the keys hard or it wouldn't type. (Talk about tired fingers!) I grew up with that kind of typewriter. Then they came out with the 'new' electric typewriter models, and it didn't require as much pressure to hit a key and respond. Our teacher referred to that as the new touch typing method. I think most of us are used to our computer keyboards and we don't hit the keys too hard anyways. There are some keyboards, as well as machines, that have extra sensitive keyboarding. With those you just have to barely touch the keys to have them type. I don't think that it's really a special skill, more a skill that develops over time with much practice on a more sensitive keyboard. The more sensitive the keyboard, the faster I can type. There are plenty of typing programs on the internet for free. If you want to increase your speed and accuracy (without looking at the keyboard) that's a better place to start. Google free typing games, or free typing tutor, or free typing practice, and you'll be amazed at what you come up with that doesn't cost a cent! | | | | | | |

| | When I was in high school, we learned touch typing by looking at a book that was set up like a large stenographer's pad. The reason that touch typing is beneficial for computers as because if you are typing something you do not have to look down at your keyboard and back to the screen. Sometimes you will miss something. I can think watching a cook give a demonstration on YouTube and when he says "separate the eggs, making sure that the whites go - " and you look down at the typewriter to find the W key and you think he means "go in first" or "stand up in peaks" instead of being just slightly beaten. When I was working, we had to watch what was going on - so we had to touch type and we had to get the letters out fast. The business depended on it. It also makes your work go faster so you can write more on myLot instead of having to look down all the time. It is an advantage. | | | | | | |

| | I was trained as a touch typist over 40 years ago and still retain the ability to type at some speed without the need to look at the keyboard. I have always found it to be a lot quicker for me to type without having to search for the keys, and with the advent of computers, the skill is even more useful now | | | | | | |

| | no, i dont think so but by being a touch typist, i have to say that i am alot faster at typing. i dont have to look at the keys when i am typing (i can just look at the document that i am typing) but i do work as a secretary though so i guess that is why i am a touch typist. | | | | | | |

| | I learned touch typing way back when I was in high school long before home computers were even close to being around. It is a skill that I have kept for the most part but computer use tends to comprise it to some extent. The key boards for desk tops are usually O'K except for the occasional odd spacing. However, laptops tend to have keys that throw you off if you don't use them a lot because the keys are of a different size and feel than those of a typewriter or desktop keyboard. Another small problem, for me at least, is that I tend to be encouraged to look at the keyboard because of entering passwords and wanting to get them right. | | | | | | |

| | I wasn't even 15 when I first learned how to type. I learned it slowly like spending a few days with a few letters of the keyboard until eventually all are well known to me. The true amount of time needed was longer than two weeks. It is because I have to rest. Learning can be a very tiring experience. After learning all the keys it took me three more months of practice and after that, typing is simple and easy. | | | | | | |
