Inexpensive fabric softeners (or natural alternatives)? |

| Okay, frugal Mylotters, I need some help. I've just started doing laundry at home with a Wonder Wash portable washing machine so I'm not spending $20 a week at the laundromat. The washer itself is working great, even if it does take a bit more effort on my part than a normal machine would. However, I'm finding that the clothes I wash are pretty crunchy when they dry. :( I have a spin dryer and one of those folding drying racks, so what I need is something that can be added to a wash or rinse cycle. I'd really prefer something that's mild and has very little fragrance. Any suggestions? | | | | | |

| | Vinegar, huh? Is there a certain kind I should use? I have a bottle of distilled white vinegar in my pantry. Will that be okay? I'm pretty sure I'm getting all of the soap out... I wash the clothes with soap, then drain the machine and rinse them with regular water at least twice. The spin dryer I use is supposed to extract soap residue, too. I guess I could rinse them under the tap to make sure the soap really is out of them... | | | |

| | White vinegar is great. It doesn't coat the fabric so it is good for towels because they stay absorbant. It is also good against limescale. | | | |

| | I agree about using vinegar. Not only will it neutralize any remaining detergent, it will brighten colors and make the clothes smell good. Is it possible to dry clothes out of doors? If you can that, choose a windy day and your clothes will be soft. Also, I know you said you had a spin dryer, but be sure as much water as is possible is out of the clothes. If all else fails, you can use hair conditioner as a fabric softener. If you have any that you don't care for, or have samples you haven't used, try that. | | | | | | |

| | I wish I could line dry things after I wash them, but our landlord doesn't allow us to have a clothesline in our yard. The spin dryer works really well--it actually extracts so much water from the clothes that they feel almost completely dry when they come out of it. I never would have thought of using hair conditioner as a fabric softener. I guess it makes sense, though. I get a lot of samples online, so I might try that later on. Thanks for the suggestions! | | | |

| | Since you cannot dry clothes outside on a windy day, try your hand held hair dryer, it may loosen and soften them a little bit more. | | | |

| | Laglen is right on about the white vinegar. I use that quite often when I run out of softener or it's not on the list of expenses at the time. You don't need a whole lot, use the same amount you'd use of regular liquid softener. Put it in before the final rinse and there is never any odor from it because it rinses back out. The nice thing with the vinegar is that it removes all the excess soap that clings on the fibers, and you end up with softer wash. (I think it's the excess soap that makes the wash 'hard') I've noticed too that wash seems whiter using the vinegar. I don't have time to bother with waiting to add stuff to the rinse cycle. Instead I bought one of those little plastic laundry balls that holds the softener (or vinegar lol) and when the cycle goes to spin it opens right up and dispenses the contents. I think it was only a buck or two at the supermarket, and was right along with the laundry soaps and stuff. | | | | | | |

| | It's been really interesting figuring out how much vinegar I need to use. I just got the Wonder Wash. Before this week I hadn't used it to wash anything but the baby's clothes, and fabric softener wasn't really necessary. The first time I used it, I put half a cup in. It softened the fabric, but everything smelled like vinegar when it dried. Oops. I used only 1/4 cup the next time, and it turned out fine. It would be great if I could use one of those laundry balls. It's not really possible with the Wonder Wash because it's a manual washer. I have to put the clothes in it, add the water by hand, seal it, and crank the handle to wash things. For the rinse cycle, it gets drained and I have to add more water, then crank it again. At least the spin dryer is electric! lol | | | |

| | I'll keep the baking soda idea in mind. I really like how the vinegar works so far. I don't do well with strong fragrances... the vinegar leaves everything smelling fresh without them! | | | |

| | Not only will the white vinegar soften your clothes, but when you are washing brand new colored clothes for the first time, put a cup of white vinegar in the water and it helps set the color in your clothing. I use it when I dye various fabrics so that the dye sets. It will keep your blue jeans and red colored clothing darker for longer and will also keep them from bleeding on your other clothing. | | | | | | |
