President Barack Obama is still the world's most respected leader  email this discussion to a friend?

This seems to be poll week. While there are those in this county who will never approve of a single thing the president does or says and who definitely have little to no respect for him, it appears that those sentiments aren't shared around the world. Do the results of this six country poll surprise you?

(April 23) -- President Barack Obama is still the world's most respected leader, according to a new six-country poll.

Released today by France 24 and Radio France Internationale, the Harris Interactive Poll asked 6,135 adults between the ages of 16 and 64 who live in the United States, Britain, France, Italy, Germany or Spain to name their favorite world leaders.

Seventy-seven percent of those surveyed chose Obama, which is one percentage point higher than when Harris Interactive asked the same question in November.

President Obama and the Dalai Lama rank at the top of a new poll measuring the world's most popular leaders.

Close on his heels is the Dalai Lama, Tibet's spiritual leader, who was mentioned by 75 percent of those polled. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton came in third at 62 percent, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel was mentioned by 54 percent of respondents, good enough for fourth place.

Taken between March 31 and April 12, the poll found that Pope Benedict XVI still ranked as the seventh most popular leader, despite the ongoing revelations about sexual abuse in the Catholic Church.

On the flip side of the coin, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Libya's Moammar Gadhafi and Chinese President Hu Jintao earned a collective thumbs-down as the world's least popular leaders.

The results don't surprise me considering the U.S.' position in the world. It just so happens I don't agree with the majority of U.S., Britain, France, Italy, Germany or Spain's survey population.

They respect our President and our Secretary of State because the U.S. itself is respected around the world? Well, that's good.

Not a surprise after the last few years. Country's need to feel secure in the idea that they can talk to U.S. leaders without ridicule. Dialoge is the first step to any sucsessful relationships.

We don't have to be perfect as Americans but we do have to be open to discussion and willing to admit when we do something wrong. I know many that think we don't owe any appologies to anyone but over the last 75 years we have made some real international blunders and owning those is as important as what we do right. America is a great nation and in truth I think most people of the world not only wish us well but are desperate for us to do well. In some cases we are their hope for a better world.

Kennedy, Reagan, Bush Sr. (41) and Clinton have all been very popular with most of the world. We now have a president with a great sense of history and an understanding of how we fit in the world, what we as Americans are truley capable of.

I think Obama has helped to make the U.S. look less arrogant to the rest of the world without making us look weak, as has been the accusation made by those who use terms like "apology tour". Since this poll consisted of regular, everyday people it's pretty clear that he has retained the respect of our international friends...and so has Hillary Clinton, who came in third.

As a man, Obama can talk a good talk. He is less hard line than many of his previous colleagues.

So, perhaps a guy whom is seen as a listener is respected by other leaders. And that's a good thing all by itself.

Mr. Obama has a lot of potential that he hasn't lived up to yet. I hope that he will, though.

I have to admit that I was wondering how the rest of the world saw our president so the results of this poll were pretty enlightening. I wasn't aware of the other one done in November so it's good to know that he did well then, too.

I think it's because he was a US president, nothing more.

Here, there were some questionable surveys on the current president and government.

One survey said only 20% said he did a good job, months before the election.
Close to election, the same survey said he got over 60% support.

Another survey done on the government. It was said that most people said the government did a good job, but it was not said what kind of people took the survey. Surely it was not the homeless or the working class.

On all the above, it was never mentioned where it was done, and what kind of people took the survey, and if there was any outside influence, and I think the same was with the poll you mentioned. lol.

myLot reputation of 82/100. spalladino (11857)   ranked 127 out of 3,984 in politics  2 years ago

This wasn't a government poll, starchaser, so it's different in that way. This was an opinion poll taken from the general population in the countries the article listed and, no, I don't believe there was any outside influence. The people in those countries are free to express their opinions honestly.

myLot reputation of 66/100. Starchaser (773)  2 years ago

I was making examples, about how the polls done. Here it can't be trusted, and until I know exactly how the Obama poll was done, I won't trust it, too, as the poll could target specific people on specific regions. The outside influence can be many things, including directing the poll to target specific people.

How can this be when he has such a low approval rating even at home? And what do foreigners really know about Obama's decisions and how they are working out?

This is absurd. It's just another perfect example of how the media made Obama out to seem like the next coming of Jesus before he's actually done anything even close to deserving this kind of attention.

myLot reputation of 82/100. spalladino (11857)   ranked 127 out of 3,984 in politics  2 years ago

Gosh I hate to say it but americans can be so arrogant, selfish, and single minded sometimes....
Yes there are a LOT of problems here that need to be solved and Obama is working on them....everyone wants instant gratification in america but he said durring the election that things wouldnt get better over night and any thinking person should be able to figure that out on their own anyway! Rome wasn't built in a day and all...
BUT...even though we are in a crisis right now and suffering we are still better off than a LOT of the rest of the world!! And our president being admired and respected by most of the world outside of our borders is a HUGE thing....being able to have an amicable relationship with the other world leaders is imperative to the wellbeing of our own country!!!
I admire Obama very much.....wether he makes some mistakes or not I feel like he has our best interest at heart and is truely trying to make a better world for all of us....i sure like that attitude a lot better than the previous administrations kick a$$ now and take names later attitude!!

myLot reputation of 66/100. Starchaser (773)  2 years ago

The Indonesian president said the same, that things in Indonesia wouldn't get better overnight, and he was right. It's been years! lol.

myLot reputation of 83/100. hornswaggled (2074)  2 years ago

Pixel,
You talk like a foreigner....are you? You say you're from the Carolinas but your words smack of a person who has not lived here long....and if you are an American I suggest you take a hard look at your comments. They smack of sedition.

myLot reputation of 82/100. spalladino (11857)   ranked 127 out of 3,984 in politics  2 years ago

hornswaggled, your comment both confuses and concerns me greatly. What exactly do you find in pixel's response that "smack of sedition"? Technically, if you want to get right down to it, the folks who call the president a socialist, hitler and illegally holding office are the ones who are guilty of sedition. I have never suggested that a member here was guilty of doing that and I don't believe it's appropriate for anyone else to make that accusation in a forum where people are sharing their opinions.

myLot reputation of 83/100. hornswaggled (2074)  2 years ago

You know Spal, You can be "confused or concerned" all you want. I have a right to say whatever I damn well please; You are not the Mylot authority and never were.
For the recorn this is the definition of the word sedition...
Sedition, pronounced si-'di-sh?n, a noun from the Latin sedition-, seditio, meaning literally separation is defined as, "incitement of resistance to or insurrection against lawful authority."
This is a term used traditionally to describe a person or entity that is against the government.
The derogatory comments of someone towards our country that talk of us being arrogent or selfish is not a patriotic attitude.
If Pix or you or anyone else in this forum do not like our country I envite you to visit our esteemed bordering country of Mexico. Go see how the other half lives...hell...go to Arizona. It's pretty much Mexico now....and see how they live there.
Then come back and lecture me and my friends who ARE patriots about how our country is being mean to the poor ittle bitty president....

myLot reputation of 82/100. spalladino (11857)   ranked 127 out of 3,984 in politics  2 years ago

hornswaggled, I've tried to be nice to you but since you're leaving mylot and choose to act like an a$$ before you go, I don't feel the need to be nice anymore. If you want to talk about sedition, perhaps you should take a look at some of your little buddies who routinely post their idiotic claims that the president of the United States is not the legal president, that they don't recognize him as the president or the leader of this country, that they believe he's a socialist, muslim, hitler, evil and any other seditious remark that pops into their little mostly empty heads. You can "invite" me to do whatever stoopid thing you like...makes no diff to me at all...unless you would like to come down here to Florida and stand face to face with me. You and your friends are not patriots by any stretch of the imagination. You're sore losers...nothing more. Have fun on facebook.

myLot reputation of 67/100. anniepa (11663)   ranked 328 out of 3,984 in politics  2 years ago

Pixel, if speaking the truth about some Americans "smacks of sedition" then have at it! SOME of those on the right with all their talk of "taking back the country from the usurper", ya-da-ya-da, now THAT smacks of sedition and yet they call themselves patriots.

Spall hit it on the head, they're sore losers!

Annie

myLot reputation of 83/100. hornswaggled (2074)  2 years ago

No Annie,
As usual you can't see the forest for the trees. We are ALL losers when a president doesn't do his job...don't you get it? It's about having what we earn; it's about keeping it instead of giving it away to the illegal aliens that swarm into our country with nothing....and then get jobs, and drivers licenses and insurance when the people like you and me don't.
I could give a crap whether the president is white or black or polka dotted but the rest of the world is enamored with this idea of a black president...even though he's as white as he is black.
I want him to QUIT SPENDING.....and fix problems instead of whining about Fox news being mean to him....he needs to grow up...and so do most of you.

myLot reputation of 87/100. jb78000 (3486)   ranked 78 out of 3,984 in politics  2 years ago

now i am curious - where has obama been whinging about the media being mean to him? recently we had a real wail from a former prime minister (blair) going on and on (and on) about how the media had it in for him and how people really DID like him (not sure who these 'people' were, his family probably).

myLot reputation of 90/100. pixeltwistr (421)   ranked 771 out of 3,984 in politics  2 years ago

Well Hornswaggled I am NOT sure about this and frankly I am not inclined to be bother to try and find the answer but it seems to me that I remember somewhere in other conversations with you that you have mentioned you do not live in the united states....maybe i am thinking of someone else but at any rate...yes I am a citizen of the United States...I was born and raised here and like you I have a right to say what i think on here!
Your attitude doesn't surprise me one bit though as I have NEVER seen you say anything positive in any discussion I have seen you in! To hear you are leaving my lot was a surprise though...a pleasant one...the world has enough negative nellys already....however i would be willing to bet that you are just stirring your tail feathers and won't actually be leaving the lot at all!
So....back to the discussion.....you say you want Obama to fix our problems but spend NO money doing it....so why dont you enlighten us to exactly HOW that would play out? Obama said before he was elected that it was going to take some spending now...but it will be done in such a way that it will earn us more in the long run.....
And are you implying that had McCain been elected instead of Obama he wouldn't have spent any money? Just how would he have kept the war going for another 100 years without spending money? And since you mentioned the illegals...exactly what do you think McCain would have done about that problem? I agree it is a huge problem and it needs to be solved but we are after all America...we don't just gather whole groups of people up and ship them out...(unless its to go to war of course!) Those that are already here illegally need to be given an opportunity to stay here legally...if they dont want to go through the process for some reason (like they were a criminal in their country or they have a disease etc) then they will have to go back to their country because we can not have people here illegally....THAT has to be fixed and once those that are here have been given the opportunity then we need to secure our borders and make sure no one else comes here illegally....this is NOT prejudice on my part....Im fine with people being here LEGALLY!!

How absolutely typical of other countries to believe the bilge he's putting out.
He is NOT the greatest president...hell he isn't even an average one. He has taken over the car industry, the health care, the banks and now is shooting for wall street....way ta go you fascist president......and that is just what other countries find great. You really think France wants us to be powerful? They want us to be like them....just like their socialistic attitude.
I don't believe this stupid poll anymore than I believe pigs can fly....and I live on a farm and ain't seen one take to the sky yet.

BTW, I forgot to mention earlier...GM has paid back it's loan, with interest, five years ahead of schedule and folks are back to work so I don't agree that Obama has taken over the car industry. If GM hadn't received help all those folks would be among the millions without jobs.

myLot reputation of 90/100. pixeltwistr (421)   ranked 771 out of 3,984 in politics  2 years ago

Absolutly right Spalladino...Those against Obama continue to claim he has taken over the car industry etc etc....he has NOT... and funny how they always neglect to mention that GM has paid their loans back!!! And early too!! Obama never wanted to take them over...he took a leap of faith on them and in this instance it paid off for him....in a few other instances it didnt work out so well becaause of the greedy peole who dont care about the rest of the country....but what would you (hornswaggled) have suggested he do instead?? Just let the entire financial infrastructure crash and have even MORE people out of work and homeless???

myLot reputation of 82/100. spalladino (11857)   ranked 127 out of 3,984 in politics  2 years ago

What the people who are so dead set against the president fail to realize is that McCain would have most likely done the same thing if he had won the election. You are absolutely right, pixel, letting the economic infrastructure of the U.S. simply crash would have been devastating for everyone and we would be nowhere close to recovering by now.

They paid back the bailout money WITH MORE BAILOUT MONEY. It's a complete and utter scam and their claims are nothing short of lies and fraud to mislead people into thinking that things are going well for them. They are now under investigation by the FTC for the lies they are using in their advertising.

I only wish the world worked by booyah debate and political gotcha standards.

That means I could take out a loan to pay off my other loans and suddenly be debt free. Sht, sign me up! thumbup

But I'm just small enough to fail. sad That means GM gets to constantly take more and more of my tax money and lie about acheivment to boost sales. Meanwhile, I still can't afford to buy one of the cars I supposedly own a piece of.

Bush, Obama, good, bad -- what's it freakin' matter? We're all being duped and paying dearly. And if anyone's thinking our current president or the government in general is doing a bang-up job, I'd only ask politely to pass the dutchie on the left-hand side, because I obviously need to expand my vision to see it.
