Society definitely has to allow individual to make one's choice. But to be a responsible individual one has to think for common good. For the sake of common good society has to behave in a particular way. And not all of the behavioral pattern can be put in legal framework. For example, it's expected that you respect your parents. But this cannot be legalised. It's the social ethos that passes such value system from one generation to another. Well, if someone thinks differently, one has to allow individual the choice. But if someone is to live in a society responsibly then such choice has to be debated in a society with due respect for each other. Calling one narrow minded is not really the answer.

Sacrificing ones self respect for the sake of society and so called social ethos does not hold good in todays generation...

Well, common good is one extremely important theme for student of Social and Political Science. If a person thinks only for himself or herself without taking the larger section of the society into consideration society will collapse; civilization will deteriorate. As an individual becomes a member of a society she or he must commit to build the society in general. After all society is a 'social contract' which you and I contribute to build. It's little unfortunate many people want to enjoy the benefit society gives to them without being a responsible member of the society we have committed, though unwittingly, to build. In fact, all societies function on the principle that we will build this society. This may not be explicit to all, but the underlying assumption is there when any society is built.

Your so called 'Preachings' are fit for bookish knowledge only...they are good for nothing in this practical and dynamic world...so dont think like an age old indian...be a modern guy...do whatever u want but in an self accountable manner...
