| | You are going to have to get up early in the morning to keep ahead of him. The bad thing about smart kids is that they get bored because it doesn't take long for them to get their work done if they will do it because most of the time they already know the assignment and don't want to do something they already know how to do. Some parents have just taken their smart kid out of school and let them go at their own pace although I wouldn't want to do that myself. Another danger is sometime trying to push them too hard because you expect more of them. I am happy that I just have average kids who have to study hard to get good grades. IT makes life so much simpler. | | | | | | |

| | Oh I also have the average kids and hated it when my girls had trouble in math since that is me weak subject. I won't push him, like if they say he can be moved a grade higher, I wold rather home school him than to take him away from his friends. He is already in a special reading class, that is why he has those harder spelling words. And it ironic you'd say, "You are going to have to get up early in the morning to keep ahead of him." Because out of all my kids, he is the only one to never sleep in... | | | |

| | I hope he does really well on the test. I hope they're able to find classes to challenge him. It's great that your school has tests and options for him. Let us know how he does and what kinds of options they give him. Being a good speller in English often means a really good visual memory. Take care. | | | | | | |

| | Maybe he hates to read because the classroom stuff isn't very exciting. Do you read to him? Has he ever read any action books that boys love? Up here, the accelerated math people get some enrichment activities and the accelerated readers get better, faster paced books with questions that require higher levels of comprehension. | | | |

| | They did put him in a special class and some of his friends were there too. Also, I have read to him since he was a baby and I did find this book that when I went online, the youngest person to comment on this book was 11. Though I read most of the book to him, he took it to school a couple times to read himself..Now I have the second book on hold at the library and he already can't wait until the third book which will be out early next year. Here is a link that tells about the book..You can tell it isn't a small book so he is reading at a higher level. Plus you can tell by the short video they have that it is an action story..http://www.codebearers.com/WATCHTHEVIDEOS.aspx | | | |

| | As I suspected. You're a terrific Mom because 75% of reading when a child is young comes from someone reading to a child. Also, most kids who hate reading hate school reading. It's not exciting and if it's below the person's level, it's not challenging, so it's boring. It's good that he has friends who are also higher level. Sometimes kids don't like the other class because they have no friends in it. | | | |

| | I got a "can not display this page at this time" thing that came up. I'm the one who has a partial motherboard fried and I have to be careful what things I try to bring up since videos tend to further fry my computer since my computer was upgraded to take videos and never was actually meant to take them. So I can try again later. | | | |

| | I had a friend whose son hated reading because he had a reading disability. She got him to read "The Indian in the Cupboard" because they're part Native American. He loved it. I think that's the one she said that they came out with a video of. He saw the video and liked the book better. She was so happy because he started reading more books. | | | |

| | Can you give us an update on your son? Do you think the services helped him? I used to work as a gifted specialist and my thought was that your son does not enjoy reading because the reading he has been doing is boring. My son is a gifted artist and he only likes reading about what he is interested in, and the most up to date information is on the web...so he really doesn't like to read books. Anyway, how is his school year going? | | | |

| | Thanks rben, my son does love the Hunter Brown series and I purchased the third one for his birthday. His school doesn't have anything to encourage his reading other than last year he was taken out to read harder books than his regular class..This year I am not happy with the teachers method's..She is focusing more on their writing format as in paragraph structure, yet giving out very simple spelling words. Like this weeks words are "unhappy, replay, preview" working on the prefixes. I think this is something he should have started the school year with and not towards the end..So of course as far as his grades are, he is getting straight A's, so unless his grades go down, I'll let it go.. | | | |
