Would you pay extra tax for the national Guard to patrol the borders..  email this discussion to a friend?

A very simple manner to secure the borders is to have the national guard patrol the borders. Bush did it for 6 months then had to scale it back because of the cost. An increase in tax of 1.5%, or Obama cutting back his $400 billion tax cut in the stimulus that nobody felt, could pay for this. But would Americans support that?

So my question is this : Would you pay extra tax so that your borders be secured?

No, and "An increase in tax of 1.5%" means nothing if you don't specify WHICH tax is being increased. Increasing taxes is NOT the way to fix things. We need to cut spending in other areas. Start with the department of education. That department has don NOTHING to help education in our country. It's a money sink of bureaucracy. This whole "tax and spend" crap doesn't work when you have the biggest budget deficit in the history of this country.

We need to cut spending from areas where we're getting crap for our money. We also need people with experience in private business to go through one department after another and see where money is being wasted. Government at EVERY level overpays for supplies. They do this because they are afraid if they don't spend every penny they can, they'll have less money next year. They'd rather pay $1000 each for $500 laptops than lose that money. You'd also be amazed at how many departments are LEASING computers that still run Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0.

The tax I am referring to is the Federal Income tax. It is because of the deficit, that you need a tax to spend model. Reagan's policy of little tax, little spend, left us with a $3 trillion deficit, and that is a 1988 $.

Also, I am a person that defends the department of education. It needs to be fixed not scrapped.

A tax? no, because I think it could be funded other ways. I notice you live in Singapore so there are some things you may not be aware of. The national guard, though can be federalized for national defense, are actually the military forces of each individual state. Each state governor has full authority to call them up in to active duty in defense of their state, much like the president can call up the regular military for national defense. The guard is first and foremost under the command of each respective state.
But, as you pointed out, there is the money issue. States can do various things to raise the money, such as Bonds, to fund the troops. I would also go as far as to say they could activate the guard and then send the bill to the federal government to recoup the cost, cost I might add of something that the federal government SHOULD BE doing in the first place, the state should NOT even have to worry about this. If the fed doesn't pay the bill, sue the pants off of them for it.

Were it with in my power, I would do things like with hold federal gas, tobacco and alcohol tax payments and redirect the funds to the state military for this. I would consider taking funds from national park areas in the state and redirecting them for this purpose. I would also possibly even consider outright seizing federal land and assets within the state and perhaps reselling it to raise the funds.

I do know that the national guard is under the authority of the Governor. That is like duh! I also agree with you that illegal is definitely a federal issue. However, the state should not pay for the national guard, all of us should.

I also like the fact that you proposed solutions rather than moan about it.
