Back to college in your forties?  email this discussion to a friend?

SKWrites (27) 2 years ago

Have you considered it? Going back to school in my forties has been an interesting experience to say the least. Since I am older and more settled, learning comes a little easier as I am focused and my own need to excel will not allow me to slack off and fall off the Dean's list. It's also really cool when you talk to people and are able to say you are maintaining a 4.0 GPA!

There have been some considerations though. I am learning to leave behind my construction superintendent demeanor as I step into the classroom and assume the role of a scholar. Since I am studying in the medical field, yes I am a med student, I am required to wear scrubs and white tennis shoes to school. Big change from the jeans and steel toe boots I am used to. Sometimes I get self conscious and feel like I am wearing pajamas!

So how about you? Have you considered back to school at this stage of life?

I haven't, but I'm always encouraging my parents to. I'm 19, and went to a university for a year and then had to drop out because I couldn't really afford it! So I'm working on getting back into the swing of college life..Soon. But I applaud anyone who's in their middle-ages and going back to school. My parents always make excuses about it even though they complain about their jobs and lack of choice in them - it's like..Do something about it, then! It's never too late, if you ask me. I've had senior citizens in a couple of my classes - which I thought was totally awesome. In fact, a lot of schools (like weekend schools and online schools) tailor learning ESPECIALLY for adults who haven't been to school for a while. So people pretty much have no excuse not to go.

I have never been to college. I don't feel I need to go. I can get all the education I need right here online. I know several sites that have free programs for literature and writing. And you would be surprised how much you can learn from discussion groups and chosing the right people to hang out with in some of them.
