Harry Potter surpasses James Bond as the most successful movie franchise |
| |
| The Harry Potter movie series surpassed the James Bond movie series as the most successful movie franchise of all-time. The first 6 movie adaptation of J.K. Rowling's books amassed a total of $5.4 billion in earnings worldwide edging out the 22 films considered under the James Bond series which totaled for $5 billion globally. Inflation wasn't considered in counting the total earnings for both films so both are considered equally even though the James Bond series started way before Harry Potter. In US alone, neither Harry Potter nor the James Bond series topped the charts. The 6-film Star Wars saga topped in the US with a total of $1.9 billion in earnings compared to the Harry Potter series is second with $1.7 billion and James Bond with $1.6 billion. However, despite being surpassed in earnings, the James Bond film series is still considered as the most successful film franchise in film history. Since their first showcase of "Dr. No" in 1962 as the first ever James Bond installment, the film has become a worldwide hit even almost 5 decades later. The Casino Royale spoof in 1967 and the 1983 Never Say Never Again weren't included and considered in the James Bond franchise count. | | | | | |

| | I think they should consider the inflation before releasing such statement. Ticket prices are much, much, much,....,much higher today compared to the time the first installment of James Bond was released. | | | | | | |

| | What I meant that inflation wasn't considered was that they compared Harry Potter to James Bond in the same rate. They were compared equally. | | | |

| | In my humble opinion, comparing these two series is like comparing apples to oranges....they are NOT the same thing!!! When Sean Connery was James Bond, ticket prices were $1.00-2.00 per ticket. With Harry Potter, prices were $7.00-10.00 per ticket. So, doing the math, James bond is still WWAAYYY out front!!! At a minimum, James Bond earned $15 billion & at max earned $25 billion counting for inflation. They also did NOT consider that back when the James Bond series first came out, movies were not as global as they are now!!! Bollywood did not even exist. Other countries really didn't give a crap what movies we put out!!! With Harry Potter, word was out that it was a major phenomenon & kids were waiting to see it. Speaking of kids, the number of children available to watch the Potter series has tripled if not more. James Bond was not a child's movie series. So, I go back to my original comment, that they should NOT be compared!!! | | | | | | |

| | It was stated that the inflation rate wasn't considered so both were compared equally. I think the film industry is very much aware of it that the prices before were way lower than what it is now so pretty sure they didn't overlook that aspect. | | | |

| | I am not surprised that Harry Potter surpassed James Bond. Harry Potter has the kid market, when you get kids you get parents. That's two for one. Good for the bottom line. Harry like James will be earning money forever. I'm serious, they'll still be getting dinero in the year 3000, as long as there is humanity! | | | | | | |

| | This is one of those worthless statistics which gets chucked out from time to time. I say worthless because it’s impossible to compare the two franchises due to genre, target market, social influences, longevity and so on. People go wild on this sort of information, such as when Avatar became the biggest box office movie of all time yet in reality it says nothing about the film or franchise just that it made a lot of money. Am I surprised that Harry Potter surpassed James Bond, not in the slightest. With the already huge following from the book series it was guaranteed to be a hugely popular movie franchise. And no doubt in 10 years or so another franchise will come along and surpass Harry Potter. | | | | | | |

| | You have to remember that James Bond movies were mostly back in the day when movies didn't cost $10 to go see. I think James Bond as a character and a series will always be better than Harry Potter. | | | | | | |

| | Yeah by not considering inflation, this entire thing is obsolete. If all of the tickets sold for James Bond were sold at the price that tickets go for now, it would be ANNIHILATING Harry Potter in terms of how much money it has made completely. The series has been going on for so long. | | | | | | |
