How has history affected your life? |
| |
| Well the history of Europe in the 1880's has affected my life. That is because the Cossacks ran through the Jewish villages and made everyone leave. This is why one set of my great-grandparents went to America. Another great-grandfather had heard that the sidewalks of America were paved with Gold, so he went from Moscow to Pittsburgh. Another left in 1865 to help fight for the South in Macon, Georgia. Another set came from Warsaw, Poland and settled in a small town in Pennsylvania. So, my family were all in the United States by the time Hitler came to power. I'm sure some relatives perished in the Holocaust, but by that time no one was in contact with them and I didn't even have the chance to find out what the names were before they were changed to live in America. What is your story? | | | | | |

| | I have connections to a native American Indian tribe, and my ancestors would not have been in Oklahoma if the United States government had not forced them onto a reservation. | | | | | | |

| | Very interesting. How do you feel about this event in history? Do you feel that your ancestors were bitter about the move? | | | |

| | Well not much! We Greeks have been here since 5000 BC! We've been conquered by Turkey for 400 years and by Germans at WWII but never changed our stubborn minds either our language or religion. | | | | | | |

| | The only think that history affected my family was when my grandfather used to hide rebels that were fighting the Nazis at WWII. Eventually Nazis found out and burned his restaurant. He escaped and moved to another town. Now this town is my where I was born! | | | |

| | It is a family tradition, and one of my grand-uncles wrote a humorous memoir about the experiences of the family when they arrived in America. They were originally from Moscow, Ukraine, and Poland, and decided to move in the 1880's, and some in 1860 to America. I had to find out this information when I was in 9th grade to do a project about Family History. At that time, a TV program called "Roots" was on, and it traced the history of a Black family all the way back to Africa. So the Social Studies teacher had us trace our families as far back as we could go as well. | | | |

| | A lot of events in history have affected my life. My great-grandpa's brother is MIA from World War II. My great-grandpa's father was an abolitionist in a time of slavery and even helped the slaves and would befriend them on the railroads. One of my possible (doing ancestry searches now) relatives is buried in Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial, after he lost his life in WWII as well. Also, on my Native American side, very little culture was passed down, possibly because of what the boarding schools that kids were sent off to did to my ancestors. They shamed them into the "white man's way". They had to take white names and were punished when speaking any Native American language, very harshly which makes me really sad because as I plan to have kids in the next 3 years, I want nothing more than to be able to teach my kids about that side of my family, nothing more than them to be able to be fluent in Crow/Apsaalooke and Choctaw/Chahta, but I am having to learn all of it myself now, instead of growing up with it. | | | | | | |
