pilgrim fathers |
| |
| Most of us are aware that the Pllgrim Fathers set out from Plymouth England in the Mayflower what I bet most us (maybe US colleagues are the exception) are unaware that the original 102 Pilgrim Fathers started their journey near here in Retford (http/:www.retfordpilgrimfathersorigins) People may also be unaware that this group of people thought England was becoming very ungodly, were persecuted for their beliefs and thought that North America was unpopulated except for a few 'savages' therefore safe. It is likely they were closely associated with Methodism because the founder of Methodism, John Wesley, lived also near here in Epworth - a village about 15 miles from Reford and about 5 miles from me here in Misterton. I suspect that may be a reason why the main religion in the US is Calvinism rather than say Roman Catholicism. I would love to learn what others know about this and how well known Retford in particular is I didn't know any of this until I moved here 10 years ago and I'm English! | | | | | |

| | Retford is overshadowed by Worksop, Doncaster and Sheffield. I wasn't aware it has a market that is 800 years old (started in the 12th century) and is still held Thurs - Sat in the market place. We are really nottinghamshire but Reford is classified as being in Lincolnshire and our postcode is a South Yorkshire one! Louth (about 50 miles away) is also famous for being the seat of a rebellion against Henry V111's abolition of the Roman Catholic Church I didn't know that until I moved to Lincolnshire from Greater Manchester, and I'm interested in History! | | | |

| | OK back to Retford - I used to work there too. Most of my contracts have been 2 or 3 years voluntary sector see funding is only for 2 or 3 years and no guarantee of renewal. | | | |

| | How interesting! I suppose that if you think about it Methodism and the Quaker religion were very big further back in history, and when I think of the Pilgrim Fthers I do tend to think of more puritan types. Is there much recognition of the Pilgrim Fathers in Retford? | | | | | | |

| | A bit - on the website obviously and also in a nearby village Scawby or something. There's a church there they used to attend but the church is now locked and you need to make an appointment to visit. As it is looked after by a volunteer you need to be prompt, reliable and flexible. They wonder why more people don't visit! | | | |
