Did you ever think you saved money but ended up wasting? |
| |
| I bought up these hot Italian sausages . . . they were on sale and I needed it for my spaghetti sauce the next night . . . I figured I could freeze the rest as I always do when I find a meat bargain. Well, I used what I needed . . . and then I forgot about freezing the rest - til about a week later. By then, the sausages were all gray - ahhhhhhh!! I wasn't sure how long sausages would keep . . . but I figured better safe than be sorry, so they were all tossed out. Ugh. I hate wasting food and wasting money! I bought a huge package of pork chops the other day . . . this time I remembered to freeze them right away. Have you gotten a serious bargain, only to kick yourself for letting it go to waste? | | | | | |

| | i often buy fruit and vegetables when they are reduced because they so expensive to buy these days but i do too waste them because i either buy too many that i cant eat them all before they go out of date so in the end you are giving money away | | | | | | |

| | Oh yes, fruits and veggies do get wasted at times here too! A bargain is a bargain, but if you don't eat them, they just rot and go to waste! Oh - and with bananas that happens real quick! I notice if you buy produce at the cheaper places, the prices are great, but they tend to go bad faster. | | | |

| | Yep, that happens to us all the time. I get my produce at cheaper places . . . and sure the prices are cheaper, but it also means they are very ripe and you had better eat them quickly or else they will rot soon. So it either means buy little, but end up going more often - which also means wasting gas. | | | |

| | yep, and unfortunately happens more than I like to admit. I'm always putting something in the fridge right after supper telling myself I will get it to the freezer the next day....usually doesn't happen. Last week I let a whole meal go to waste when I left the table before everyone else was done and totally forgot to put anything away at all! Marsha | | | | | | |

| | Yup yup yup . . . I will do the same thing as you! I will often roast a whole chicken and spread it out throughout the week in different dishes, but sometimes a few pieces get lost in the fridge - and by the time I discover it, it's probably not good anymore and I have to toss it. I hate it when I leave something out to cool before sticking it in the fridge and then forget about it. | | | |

| | Yeah I've done that before too. IT's a deal and you figure you'll seperate the package later seeing here they only give you a deal on things if you buy several pounds or even sell them like hamburger especially. Though on a non-food sense is when I find a deal at a rummage and due to my kids or the excitement of the find I don't look close enough and find out that it's got a hole or tear in it and I wasn't aware of it til I got home & tossed it in the wash. *sigh* | | | | | | |

| | Oh geez - I've done that with hamburger meat from Costco - I totally left in back of the fridge in case I couldn't pack it up to freeze til later and then I'd totally forget about it for days. And yah, I've done it with non food stuff too . . . my recent one was with a book I got for my daughter . . . I discovered there were pages missing once we got home - argh! | | | |

| | Yes, I've done that. I bought apples last winter but had company coming to spend a week. Since there weren't enough apples to go around, I put them downstairs in my store room for later... I found them much later. Yuck. | | | | | | |

| | Oh no! Not quite the way you would normally make applesauce, eh? I've found fruit at the bottom of the fruit bowl like that . . . fruits that get soft like pears don't do too well at the bottom!!! | | | |

| | I have. I have gone shopping and brought something home and my husband who said he wanted to have it, found out that he really did not want it after all. The trouble was that I had a choice, eat his portion after I had my own or throw it down the toilet. Last week I bought some ricotta cheese and decided to make lasagna. Now since he has als and his tongue does not work, I put his through the blender. I wound up eating some of it and throwing the rest away. Fortunately I had put the rest in single portions so I guess I will have lasagna for a few more days. | | | | | | |

| | Wow - that must be tough. The only way I could relate is when I had to feed my daughter when she was starting to have "our" food. I'd give her smashed or totally cut up versions of our table food - sometimes she's have it (hurray) and other times it was just barely touched and there was no sense keeping the leftovers because it'd go to mush. Is that why, too, that you throw out the rest of the blended food? | | | |

| | Yes that is why and I feel so guilty because I have to, because yesterday my friend mashed up some carrots and some potatoes separately. At lunch, I made a soup from tomato sauce baked beans, beef stock, onions, leaks, and some ham and I put some of the smashed carrots and potatoes in them to give it a bit of body. Well he had that for lunch. So I decided to blend the pork stew and added a little water to it because other wise the blender will not blend. I put the rest of the mashed potatoes and carrots and put that gravy stew mix on the side. He just had a few spoonfuls (very small spoonfuls) and he said he did not want any and to throw it away. He did have a tube feeding at 1:30 and it was finished before 3, but the trouble is that he is supposed to put on weight. Now how is he going to put on weight if he does not eat properly? They will only advocate complete tube feeding if he can no longer swallow. Otherwise, the tube feeding he gets is just a supplement. Oh and she is supposed to get vitamin D. He cannot get out much, I told him he has to drink milk - no way and he is not lactic intolerant. He will eat puddings, but who knows what is in them? He likes white bread and that is not good for him. When I found out that something was not good for me, I either cut it out or reduced it's use. I just do not want to be blamed if he loses more weight. Do I have to knock him out and put everything through the tube? | | | |

| | I never think like that. saving money is human nature and spending it only for creative and purposeful things. never wasting money. if we waste it never regain it . money only for satisfying needs and full fill wants. wasting money means wasting his or her life . take it seriously to keep money and spend it only for good purposes. augustine | | | | | | |

| | Well that's great if you think like that - very positive! But how do you feel if you didn't spend your money wisely afterall - that it didn't end up creative and purposeful? Do you not feel guilty for things that go in the trash? Just wondering. | | | |

| | Sadly, this happens all the time. Im in a hury make something and forget it on the counter or something silly. Also, with living with a load of people food tends to get moved around and all ovrr the place. I tend to forget I bought it basically if I cant see it then I forget until it goes bad. I get so upset when wasting food and when Im tossing it in the compost I always think that was $howevermuch I just wasted. I try to avoid this but my roomates dont see it this way and just waste food all the time and let it go bad. | | | | | | |

| | I've never had a load of roommates, but my friends who did say the same thing. They used to buy up all this food, but not many of them took the time to cook - and like you said food gets moved around all over the place (you can never keep track of your stuff and their stuff). I remember looking in their fridge and seeing various bags and boxes from different fast food places . . . all these leftovers that would probably never be eaten. | | | |

| | Ah yes, money slips out of our hands so quickly, eh? All the little things we get add up and we don't realize that we have spent so much - I know that happens to me a lot when I go grocery shopping. I would think that I had money left, but I did already indeed spend it all. Well, the cool thing is you can continue to save from myLot!! | | | |
