Whether media helps the child to learn?  email this discussion to a friend?

My neighbour has no television in their home and there is computer only for purpose for their child to learn English using some cds/dvds. As their children are not exposed to any other external world other than going to school they find sometimes difficult to use the correct word for any object. Their mother is teaching though they find sometimes difficult. I observed it many times while their child speak to me. These children would sing a song of the new movie which released earlier. The girl has watched it once or twice. But can sing that song with some mistakes. When the child can learn a song so quickly by watching television. Why can't a child could learn from it? It all depends on the way the child takes or approaches. If the child shown a good path in their life media wont be a hindrance for them and it is a ladder for them to climb up the heights in their life. This is my opinion. Share your views.

For me, the media really helps alot in nurturing one's mind, especially the kids, it may be a computer, a television or even a radio, all of them can help nurture one's mind. But i still think that a teacher can still be a better way of teaching a small child because it can interact lively with the child.

Hi brylle I accept only the teacher would make the child to learn many things. But some thing need to be shown and made to understand the presence of certain things which is done through media. Now a days children are more attracted towards the lively running television and computers having internet connection which has contact with the outer world.

I believe that children can learn if they are shown the proper media sites to learn from. I believe that children learn a lot from television and movies. I also know of some great online learning sites that are very educational for the kids. It can be a ladder if used correctly. However,as parents we need to monitor what our children watch as we do not need them to see the wrong things.

myLot reputation of 97/100. vijiboopathy (6240)  2 years ago

Yes carolscash there is both sides for any media. Only the way the child approaches matters. If the child is shown with good environment it would grow with good habits and manners. Most places are educational if the child is taught to learn from it. Thanks for the comments. Have a good day.

I am a primary school teacher. In a meeting we staff were discussing two children that are not permitted to watch television. The son was very good at sport and the daughter was excellent at music. Those children were super clever and great at reading.

In my home country on Free View channel 71 they have educational children's programs. I think there is no harm in children watching such programs. The programs are about numbers, letters of the alphabet, simple community activities, craft activities and language building. My toddler son is disabled and he likes 'Something Special'. It is for special needs children and it uses signing.

I think young children's applications on computers can be educational. I think such media can help a young child get interested in learning. Looking at picture books is also very important to children. Babies love books. Toddlers like picture books and educational television programs.

Hi maximax every child likes to see various colors and pictures. They imagine the world as some more different and they like to they it as like that. So most times they like to watch cartoons where there is no restriction for imaginations. Likewise every children learn a lesson from those media. Only the parents has to guide them the path they want to be. Hence the media help the children to learn many things. Thanks for sharing your views. Have a good day.

well, to me any media is just a tool. like any tool that exist now days, it really depends on how the tool assist the child's learning process. educational tv shows, cd's, dvd's and other modern media are just that, modern tools. i'm sure we've all seen evidence of some of those media that are labeled 'educational', but seem to not have any educational impact on the child at allsad

if someone were to ask me, i'd always recommend the Sesame Street or Barney the Dinosaur series. sure it may sound a bit corny and funny to adults, but children really like it. it'll be good that when the child is first introduced to those shows, there's an adult there by the side to also show interest and encouragement. once the child gets used to it, they tend to pick up the lessons themselves.

it worked for some of the families that i know. i can't wait to try this out when i eventually have a kid of my own happy

Hi mario many educational programs are present for children. In every program the child can learn only with the help of some guidance from parents or the people caring them. I have not heard about the series you have mentioned. I would search for it and have to download. Thanks for sharing here. Have a good day.

There are two ways of looking at this in my opinion.

I think that television, in moderation, can be a good thing: Preschool children can get help learning the alphabet on public television, infant and junior children can learn about wildlife on nature shows, and parents can keep up with current events on the evening news. No doubt about it — TV can be an excellent educator and entertainer.

But despite its advantages, too much television can be detrimental:

It has also been proved that children who consistently spend more than 4 hours per day watching TV are more likely to be overweight.
Bad habits are easily picked up and it can stop children from reading, doing homework etc.

I think that parents need to control the use of the TV and to teach kids that it's for occasional entertainment, not for constant escapism.

myLot reputation of 97/100. vijiboopathy (6240)  2 years ago

Hi oldchem both are present. Only the parents has to know where to stop their child and what their child should view until they are grown up. If they make those media as learning guide then they would use it in the right way.

Some parents used to show their child with television for not disturb them while they are in house hold works which is really a harm to the child growth and health.

Some parents wont show them with television in the thought that would make their mind corrupted which is also not true.

Parents has to monitor them and has to show the source for their knowledge.

media definitely helps the child to learn a lot. but its effect to every child goes down to two sides.. the good and the bad.. i know we're aware about such fact.. but though the media has these influence to children,, the family of the child must take hold of their responsibility to let the child know why media shows, reports such.. i think it is ok if the child is learning the way that you describe, it doesn't matter if they make mistakes in speaking the language, anyways, when they go to school, such would be corrected.. :)

myLot reputation of 97/100. vijiboopathy (6240)  2 years ago

Yes ajawrites there is good and harm in showing the media. But if the parents are monitoring them and helping them to learn from media like television, internet they would helpful for the child to learn very well when compared to teaching orally.

Thanks for comments. Have a good day.

Media and other co-related field greatly enhances the cognitive mind of the child including its motor behavior related to speech and movements. By just watching they could imitate it faster whatever they saw or heard faster than those who never seen any hightech gadgets and communication. being expose to modern communication facilitate the child to be more participatory and thus enhances confidence geared to higher learning. nevertheless, so do i believe, yes the media helps the child.

myLot reputation of 97/100. vijiboopathy (6240)  2 years ago

Hi neelianoscet it is the power for the media. The child could remember what they see and hear through the media than explaining and teaching through the oral method which is boring to them. Hence if they are exposed to the good programs then definitely they would learn it quicker and more easily.
Thanks for comments. Have a nice day.

Television has its good side. It can be entertaining and educational, and open up new worlds for kids. Giving them to travel chance to globe. learn about different culture and gain exposure ideas and they may never encounter on their won community. shows with a pro social message. can have a positive effects,on kids behavior, programme with postie role models can influence viewers to make positive life style changes. However reverse can also can also be true. kids are likely to learn things from TV, that parents don't want them to learn. Tv can affect kids health, behavious family life, in the negative ways.

Hi Augustine,

Well said. i agree with you. so, aside from parental guidance scheduling is important too so that our children will not abuse the use of media.it has to be in moderation and not for them to be addicted to it's games, shows and other types that will not really help them become better persons.

myLot reputation of 97/100. vijiboopathy (6240)  2 years ago

Yes augustine the children learn faster and more keenly from media when compared to lessons from oral and using with chart pictures. If they are shown in right direction they would learn quite good habits and learn good lessons. It is the duty of every parents to take care of their child. Thanks for sharing your views. Have a good day.

Hi Viji,

For my two special kids, mass media helped a lot particularly the cds. i bought the alphabet and number cds and it really helped them alot. both of them are good in english. my youngest is good in spelling. with proper guidance the use of mass media is really helpful. They can converse and sing songs too.

myLot reputation of 97/100. vijiboopathy (6240)  2 years ago

Hi francs I have seen such kind of lessons are lacking in our place. And now here and there some kind of cds for kids to learn are originating. It is more available in cities when compared to the urban areas.
Hope your child are learning more quickly from the cds. My wishes for them francs. Have a good day.

I think that media and television is somewhat important to a child's development. They learn English in a way that is different from normal instructional material, which your friend has for their children. Learning English from a cd or a dvd can be taken further when the kids apply what they have just learned by watching tv. Another advantage would be acquiring a cultural edge. Things like Sesame Street and Yo Gabba Gabba are popular educational tv shows for children that teach more than just English. Kids get to learn other things like manners.

However, with today's seemingly unlimited amount of information that is available in both the Internet and tv programs, it is natural to be wary. But this doesn't mean that tv and the Internet should be ignored altogether. With the vast information out there, harnessing the individual's ability to choose is what makes the Internet a powerful learning tool.
