Do you tell all your secrets -- Talking to your DOCTOR? .. YOU should.  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 93/100. consultrainer (2137)   ranked 378 out of 32,950 in life 2 years ago

After prolonged research, DOCTORS world-wide decided on this

That, most WOMEN tend to keep EIGHT secrets .. or even more, when talking to a doctor.

At your annual doctor's checkup, you hop up on the exam table and bare your deepest secrets.
You confess about alcohol you consume, how many times you smoked, or the fact that you're battling depression or that you are anxious or your recent new sexual partners.

No? Isn't everyone sharing this level of information with their doctor?

Apparently not. And that hush-hush attitude may be risky.

ONE regular secret is .. keeping the information about Use of Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medicines, Herbal Supplements, and Vitamins. It is very dangerous as it might intervene with the prescription drugs that your doctor suggests.

for more, just ask me.... rasp

hi consultrainer I never do keep any secrets from mydoctor as I am a diabetic and that would be real folly. I in the fifteen minutes he seems to allot am open and honest with him about any problems as Ihave to come in every three months for a diabetic check up as living in this stupid retirement center poses some problems with the food they serve and my being able to keep my blood sugar down. well i do try and I am always honest with him.

myLot reputation of 93/100. consultrainer (2137)   ranked 378 out of 32,950 in life  2 years ago

did you tell him about your varied energy levels? .. AND, mostly, did you tell him about your HOBBY?... you MIGHT have confused his diagnosis, when you complained about the pains in your back, and fingers.... DID you tell that you have a hobby of sitting before the computer, and keep on typing, ... ? Just asking.

YOU might be very truthful with all other secrets, but, you might have ignored this HOBBY of yours. And, for the benefit of other readers:

You may not think sharing your hobbies with your doctor is of any importance, especially since many hobbies are an excellent way to reduce stress and contribute to good health. But it could be your hobby that's responsible for some medical symptoms.

Thanks for sharing the view. Please ask me for any support on medical issues. evil grin

as far as i know doctors should be asking all those questions, all the medications and supplements you're taking, any unusual/isolated reactions, all your habits, any new activity taken up, any stress (job loss, family problems, etc). of course, the patient should be truthful for their own good.

but sometimes, patients simply keep quiet and only answer when asked. since doctors deal with many patients and can be preoccupied themselves as they're only human, things get overlooked. sad

having a form to fill up would help, i guess, and the doctor should probe further by asking the patient to clarify his/her answers.

myLot reputation of 93/100. consultrainer (2137)   ranked 378 out of 32,950 in life  2 years ago

if you don't mind my sharing a clinical experience.....

I was once involved in a wrong diagnosis. Almost got fired by my BOSS.
While writing down the profile of a patient, I asked a standard question:
Are you REGULAR with your bowels and defecation.
The reply was YES. and I noted that down... . .... only after a week, did we come to know that since her teenage, (she was then 35) ... this lady had to attend to her nature-call for defecation only ONCE a week, and she is regular on that.

for those who want to know: REGULAR bowel movements and defecation should be at least ONCE a day!!!

how far am I, her DOCTOR, wrong?

thanks for coming here.

myLot reputation of 99/100. binggaling (3666)   ranked 6,294 out of 32,950 in life  2 years ago

that's what i meant by probing further. everything is relative now. what's "normal" for you may mean something else to another. everything should be 'quantified' right? like how many times a day, how many times a week.

when a mother says, my son felt hot last night, the question should follow, did you take his temperature? if yes, what was the reading?

myLot reputation of 93/100. consultrainer (2137)   ranked 378 out of 32,950 in life  2 years ago

you should try filling out forms on a busy rainy day! .. with a load more of wailing and screaming patients.

HOW would it appear, if you keep PROBING. is it not the duty of the patients, as well as the attendants of the patient, to INFORM all about the suffering VERY VERY CLEARLY, without leading any ambiguity?

thanks for the suggestion, but, friend. I don't think, it is practical to keep asking.. when there is a pressure of OUT PATIENTS.

love to see more of your suggestions, though. I would consider writing them down, as THINGS to DO... on my table.

myLot reputation of 99/100. binggaling (3666)   ranked 6,294 out of 32,950 in life  2 years ago

then make the form clearer, more specific. under bowel movement, put boxes where they can just the boxes - 1x a day, 3x a week, 1x a week. that way, no need to ask the patient to explain. not all patients know what doctors know. not all patients are educated or take time to educate themselves.

myLot reputation of 93/100. consultrainer (2137)   ranked 378 out of 32,950 in life  2 years ago

that is a very wise suggestion . i should add that to the questionaire.

but, bowel movements is just one such example. ..

you are very right again about the education patterns, interests and patience levels of the suffering patients.

Well, consult, I am happy to see this sort of discussion from you! I guess all my nagging to you in PM"s is finally paying off! lol

I know that I should have an annual check-up, but I never have. I am blessed with good health and only seek "professional" health care when I have an accident i.e. Man Attacking Thorny Plants!

However, if I ever do need to talk to a doctor I would tell him everything that is pertinent. If you are going to talk to a professional then you should be a professional patient as well.

Now, I would just love to know what those 8 secrets are!

myLot reputation of 93/100. consultrainer (2137)   ranked 378 out of 32,950 in life  2 years ago

I have started off .. as responses to the comments that I receive. Till now, I told about Popping drugs and not informing , Not telling about the sleeping habits and, not informing the doctor about the hobbies that one is involved..

Ofcourse, the SEXUAL PARTNERS that you maintain, also have a bearing. I can give you a link to a popular Ob/Gyn doctor... who is SHOUTING HOARSE about the new PAP-SMEAR guidelines. But, It is all about a woman! ...

A man might reveal more than his secrets about his habits. But, a woman seldom shares information about her bedroom partners. With a DOCTOR. it is sure to have a bearing on the diagnosis and prescription.

Thanks about the private message nagging. But, I don't want to give you credit.rasp

Yes, i've always been honest with my doctor. I tell him everything including my vices so he'd know what's wrong with me whenever i'm feeling weird.

myLot reputation of 93/100. consultrainer (2137)   ranked 378 out of 32,950 in life  2 years ago

that is very correct. and proper. but, did you tell him about the various times, when you feel down. ENERGY levels really dropping ..

this also has a bearing on the diagnosis. just one more point.

female's have the tendency to consider that MOOD SWINGS and altered energy levels are common for them. .. WRONG NOTION.

LUCKY, we both are not women.wink

i'm kind of guilty of being like this too...never sharing the full story with the doctor. sometimes i even procrastinate about seeing the doctor in the first place sorry

i know it's wrong. in fact, one of my resolutions this year is to finally go for that FULL MEDICAL CHECKUP that i've been avoiding for the past few years. i have been going to the doctor's occasionally, but almost always with something minor.. eg: sniffles, throat irritation.. yeah, i know that sometimes small things tend to be a prelude to bigger things and all.

yeah, i really need to make time to get my butt over to the doctor's and get that checkup..

did you register with my forum for online medical advises? .. i am just checking .......................

i will have to put your account on HOLD, .. please tell me when you are scheduled to go for a FULL BODY MEDICAL CHECKUP. I cannot handle the pressure....

i AM sure, the machines will break-down. And, the attending physicians will go on a LONG-LEAVE. or may be, they might have already applied for a change of POST.

Hi,
When ever i need to go to doctor,i tell every secret about my health. We should tell the truth to doctor so that he can take right decision and can cure properly.Even we should talk about our bad habits too if any.
Many people hide it from the doctor. But it is not good.

myLot reputation of 93/100. consultrainer (2137)   ranked 378 out of 32,950 in life  2 years ago

mtvmtv you are very right. The purpose of this topic is to make everyone be truthful to themselves, and tell the doctor .. everything.

including the drugs and use/ abuse of alcohol, tobacco, etc.

Further, it is surprising that, people think that they can hide certain facts of their lives, from their doctors.

THE doctor might appear to have believed you. BUT, your blood reports, chest x-ray and such diagnostic tools REVEAL your dirty inner-secrets.

I just hate to visit doctor but when i have to i am totally honest and tell everything he asks for.I am not a drinker or smoker but when i have some problems,i open up fully.
Recently i have been having swelling in my whole body and thyroid test was conducted on me.I never ever take drugs/medicines on my own and fully rely upon my doctor.

very good kirti. it is very nice to have honest patients. BUT, did you tell your doctor about your mood swings? .. and cravings for some particular food? .. it will also have a say, while diagnosing.

and, what was the THYROID PROFILE telling ? ... Hope you are always healthy.
