getting complimentary magazine  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 96/100. carmelanirel (12198)   ranked 32 out of 9,001 in reading 2 years ago

I have readers digest send me e-mails with the latest their online newsletters and last time they did this I had just gotten back from the Pennsylvania trip, so I was kind of brain dead at the time.

I think they sent this e-mail to enter this contest, but when I clicked on it to enter, I was so out of it, I didn't realizing that by entering I was subscribing to their magazine.

Now as much as I love readers digest, we get them occasionally when we can at the store. I not only can't afford it right now, but I don't have a credit card to pay for since it was an online transaction. So when I saw it, I immediately found a link to cancel my subscription and cancelled..

Obviously it didn't work because I got another e-mail this morning with my bill..shocked so I again went to cancel and explained why I was cancelling, that I inadvertently had subscribed and that I had tried to cancel right away when I saw what happened.

I just got a reply and this is what it says: In accordance with your request, we have canceled your subscription. Because our magazine labels are printed in advance, you may receive one or two more issues. You may keep them with our compliments. Please disregard any invoices you may receive for this.w00t

Wow, so I may get a couple of these before it is completely and and I get it with their compliments.

I feel bad that this has happened yet at the same time, I am happy that I may get a couple magazines before it cancels out.

What do you think? I don't get how something as quick as online transactions makes it impossible to cancel right away..confused

Wow, that's great that you are able to get free magazines. But I don't understand why you get it actually. haha.

Because they print out the address labels in advance, that is what it says in the bold print that I copied from my e-mail.

I think it's very generous of Reader's digest to do that under the circumstances. You should feel lucky and I understand how you did that...I did that once with makeup and recieved $87.00 worth of makeup products I was obliged to pay for....it's still in the bathroom unopened!

And they didn't charge you for them? Well I guess if you are a potential customer in the future, they do this to make sure you are satisfied with their business dealings..

When we subscribe for a magazine it usually takes 6 weeks for them to get the first issue out to us so I am wondering if they really have your magazines ready. They may just be sending them anyway so that you might change your mind and actually order a years worth.

myLot reputation of 96/100. carmelanirel (12198)   ranked 32 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

Well if they try that lotterylover, I saved the e-mail I got and won't delete it until much later..

myLot reputation of 91/100. lotterylover (7426)  2 years ago

Be sure to see if there is any place where it says you need to reply and discontinue
it or they will keep sending it to you and bill you for it.

myLot reputation of 96/100. carmelanirel (12198)   ranked 32 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

There was nothing, but like I said, I saved all the e-mail messages..If they want to bill me, then they are going to have a tough time because besides the e-mails, we have no money..

myLot reputation of 91/100. lotterylover (7426)  2 years ago

The emails will probably work. Don't think that because you don't have money that they won't keep sending you a bill if they wanted and would add interest and probably late charges. Timeshares do that and if you die they pass that onto your children. I know my daughter would call and see if they have a subscription in their computer. But then she was a paralegal and knows what people have had to go through over small matter. Actually, she is having to deal with a landlord. They don't keep sending her a bill. They just ruined her credit.

Yea online transactions will get ya. So many of them are processed instantly and then it just depends on the company's policies and procedures to determine whether or not you can cancel right away. I think some companies purposely make their policies so that you can't cancel immediately. It probably gets them more sales than if they did because some people will just let it go, rather than deal with the frustration of following specified procedures for cancellation.

I once signed up for some complementary informational thing and then discovered all the hidden fees and etc. I had to call and cancel, they had no way to request cancellation online.

myLot reputation of 96/100. carmelanirel (12198)   ranked 32 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

Well I hope they don't try to come back on me. I did keep the official e-mail as well as the ticket number from when I contacted them about cancelling it..

that is not as bad as what happened to me with a subscription to Readers Digest supposedly in my name as the real person used my address and how she thought I spelled my name. I kept getting dunned for copies of a magazine I had not signed up for. seems this thief girl used to live in the apt. before us then moved to another apt but in the s ame complex. she would waylay the mail carrier evidently as Readers digest kept dunning me so finally I called up the representative of Readers digest staff. Hetold me I had signed up five months back. I said no I did not, I have not received one copy so why must I pay for something I did not order. Then I asked him how the name was spelled and he said Patsy Hatley, and I said someone is using my name to get a free magazine each month. I do not spell my night like that,my name is Patsie M. Hatley. and I did not order a subscription. I told him about how there was a young woman who used to live in our apartment but had moved to a different one in the same complex. The representative suggested I talk to the mail carrier. so I did and we found where she lived myson took the letters to her and told her to mail the money to the Readers digest or he would call the police and charge her with interupting our mail to get out a magazine. She must have paid as we never got any more statements from Readers Digest.lol lol lol.

myLot reputation of 96/100. carmelanirel (12198)   ranked 32 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

shocked wow, that was a stupid move on her part. I can't believe someone would use their neighbor to get a free magazine..thumbdown Good thing you found out and that your son and told her what she needed to do and that she did it..:)

myLot reputation of 99/100. writersedge (7230)   ranked 48 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

I would be talking to the mail carrier, too.

It would seem like it would be easy to cancel a subscription right away, but it isn't because of "networking". The computer that generated the email about subscribing to R.D. works seperately from the main frame computer. When you click to subscribe, it is routed through the main computer to the computer that handles subscription billing. (It knows nothing but billing) From that computer it sends the information back to the main frame computer which in turn sends the information to another computer (or program) which generates the labels. Once that is done it returns the information back to the main frame computer which sends the information to the subscription computer to let it know that you will be receiving the next issue. Not one of the computers is set up to understand that you made a mistake and don't really want to subscribe, that you just pushed the wrong button.

At this point you end up either having to email the company or call their customer service which is usually in India, outer Slobvoia or Mars. They have the power to access the main frame and let it know that you made a mistake. It takes a little time for the computers to understand the concept of mistake so the magazine figures two things, first it is easier to let you keep the magazines than to try to put them back into their inventory, and secondly it is wonderful good will for when you can afford the subscription...you'll be very apt to subscribe to R.D. because they were so nice to you.

I had to call Fed Ex this morning because something I ordered had taken nearly two weeks to get here and I was wondering why. I didn't sleep well last night...first thing is when I crawled in bed (I have a cup of tea beside the bed for when I get those nasty tickle coughs) with my cup of tea, Murphy decided it would be great fun to dump the cup. I spent 20 minutes drying everything off. Then Willy and Khuay decided to have a fight on the bed. I kicked them off. Then Dinglebeary wanted me to love him. He stood on my chest (on the spots where the chest tubes had been...they're still very sore areas!) and butt his head against mine and bite the end of my nose. He got tossed off the bed. I finally got to sleep at 3:30 a.m. and had to be up early because I was driving a friend to an appointment 100 miles away. Anyhow, I called Fed Ex and didn't even think about what was coming out of my mouth, I blurted out "Oh my G-D! You speak English!". The gentleman on the other end had a great laugh at that statement. As I told him a lot of my customer service calls get routed to India and other regions where they are hard to understand. Just from that you can tell how the day went. When I get home I'll post the whole story. Anyhow, it was a computer problem that caused the delay in delivery. The package has more miles on it than my car. It went from Grants Pass Oregon to Washington state, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Colorado. It landed in California yesterday and they finally delivered the package today. Hoorah for computers!

Now the MyLot computer states that I can't use emotes because I am under the rank of 200...and I have been ten times that amount for how long???

rofl I so love your cat stories, and still waiting to read the "book" Their better than Garfield..rofl

So you actually told this guy that? I bet he had a great laugh and shared it for days at work..

Not that I am against people in other countries, but I have a problem when words are mispronounced for some reason. So anyone with a heavy accent, I have to keep repeating myself over and over again: Excuse me? Can you repeat that? It gets pretty old fast..

I don't know why mylot does that with the emotes. Sometimes I see because I take so long responding, (Mostly because I am intruptted by my familyrolleyes), that I get signed out..

from personal experience, a long time ago with Readers Digest, I can tell you 'don't feel bad' that you will recieve a few free issues. I love Readers Digest, but like you I could no longer afford the subscription so I didn't renew! They automatically renewed for me! When I called and complained they told me that they do this so I would not miss any issues. I told them there was a reason why I never sent in the renew form, I didn't want the magazine anymore! Although they told me they would cancel my subscription, they continued to come, I got turned into a collection agency and they called me and I told them what happened and they got it canceled for me. I told Readers Digest to remove me from their mailing list and I think it took 10 years before I finally stoped getting mail from them! HONEST!!!!!

myLot reputation of 96/100. carmelanirel (12198)   ranked 32 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

You know what Christmas..I think years ago that happened to me too and since I couldn't afford to pay them and told them I didn't want the magazine anymore, they did continue to send a couple and tries to get me to pay for them..Ironic that they seemed to think I want a subscription since I still owe them...confused

myLot reputation of 98/100. Christmas2006 (830)   ranked 1,667 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

Was it under a different name or address? Mine wouldn't be we have lived here 33 years. Also I think after 7 years they cannot collect but I am not sure. I get special offers from them every so often for books and I just throw it away.

I bought a cookbook and got a free magazine subscription with it. I have also gotten some mag subscriptions that I like and they were only $6 so that I could afford.

myLot reputation of 96/100. carmelanirel (12198)   ranked 32 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

I can't remember. I know the address has changed, but the name, I don't know if it was mine or my husbands..maybe that is why they didn't connect it??

myLot reputation of 98/100. Christmas2006 (830)   ranked 1,667 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

We are blessed with this wonderful world of computers that are to be so much smarter then we are. The problem is with us 'older generation' we can still think for ourselfs and can see the conflicts that the younger generation say 'I didn't think of that' or my favorite "the computer won't let me"...I don't know where you fit in this 'generation' if you are like me 'the pre-computer life' or if you are 'the after life!"...point is, with everything done by computers, that is very likely, in your husbands name. I have 2 credit cards that are in my name from hte same company but my name is split first and middle, one has my name in all one word the other one doesn't...couldn't they match the Social Security # or address? Apparently not!!!!

When we had our garage we kept getting a computer generated job check for a nonexistant account. I would call the company, explain to them and send the check back. The next month I would go through the same thing. The last time I talked to their accounting she told me 'we have to do what the computer tells us and it says we owe you. We are not allowed to question the computer!"....they owed another company with the same name in another town but we always came up in the computer first so the computer issued us the checks. She told me I could cash the check that they would never know the difference! I did as always and returned the UNcashed check to them.

My point in all of that is I hope you get your problem straightened out forgive my spelling!

That's a form letter, who knows what the reality is. You may or may not get some. Since it is quick, they may have printed some immediately. On the other hand, printers could be backlogged and canceled, too.

I get regular letters from Readers Digest asking me to enter their big "Give Away". Besides entering me in the contest for thousands of collars, they also want to send me a copy of their latest Condensed books, but only in the fine print does one learn that they are also signing up to receive more books at regular intervals at their regular price. Some of the letters want to sell me special books about, music, history, etc. The big come on is the give-away (lottery). If they have that much money to give away, why don't they lower the price of their magazine subscription. I'm considering letting my subscription expire because of the price.

myLot reputation of 96/100. carmelanirel (12198)   ranked 32 out of 9,001 in reading  2 years ago

That is what happened. I was so out of it from the trip, I didn't realized when I clicked on "enter" the contest, that I was signing up for a subscription..
