Parents and their kids (no matter what age) on Facebook . . .   email this discussion to a friend?

I noticed some of my teen/young adult friends have their parents as their Facebook friend . . . others are not connected with them even though they have FB accounts (and I have both parents and their kids on my friend list). Of course I notice that the young ones with the parents on there are not as racy and are on their better behavior - hee hee. Most of them have a trusting, open book relationship with their parents.

I have a parent friend who doesn't want to go on her grown daughter's list - she thinks it's an invasion of her daughter's privacy. But the grown daughter WANTS her mom there . . . so I guess it really depends on the person!

Are your parents your "friends" on Facebook? Why or why not? Would you want your own kids to add you in as a friend for safety issues perhaps, or would you let them have their total privacy? My parents are not my friends on Facebook - but that's because they don't use the computer at all. silly

This is an interesting question, I think though that it just depends on the type of relationship you have with each other and that determines if they add each other. For me though I would probably be a friend but not snoop you know. Everyone needs their privacy to an extent.

Yep, it definitely depends on the parent/kid relationship. The other day my aunt made a friend request to me - and I actually had to sit on it a few days to think over whether I should add her or not . . . so it's funny how we don't think about it til it actually happens (and she's just an aunt - not my parent). Everyone needs their privacy, but if you're on Facebook, it's at least open to all your friends.

my kids are on my facebook but its not really a big deal. i dont go on theirs, i trust them. i do see their status updates etc but we really dont put that much emphasis on facebook anyways.

I think it's great that you trust your kids. I know if I were some of my teen friends' parent, I wouldn't trust them - hee hee. And I know for sure they wouldn't dare add their parents. But others seem to leave their kids alone even if they are "friends" on Facebook (I see both sides) - they seem to have mutual respect and courtesy on FB.

I have my father and both of my kids (ages 11 & 16) as "friends" on facebook. I've never had an incident where either of my children made me blush and I hope the same can be said for my father. I'm very lucky to have such an open relationship with my family and our collective moral compasses' point due north.

Yes, you are fortunate to have such a great family relationship . . . I like your comment about your "collective moral compasses' point due north"! I hope it will be the same with us and our kids when they get older - and that's with or without Facebook - hee hee!

I am on facebook and my father says it is a social site for youngsters and he will prefer the mail and the letters. My mother share the same point of view as she like to video calls only. They do not favor to be on sites like this. I do not want it too because I will think that even there I do not have a privacy.

I think a lot of people feel that way too. My parents don't want any part of living in a computer world - they are far from wanting to be on something like Facebook. My inlaws are probably the same - thinking that snail mail and such are more personal. Yah, I can see how the younger ones want to keep their privacy!

I've heard some youngsters saying their biggest facebook mistake was accepting parents as friends. One said he was "forced" to accept because his parents asked him about it after 2 weeks of pending friend request! I guess some kids just don't want to be judged by their parents based on what they do or say in facebook. It could also go both ways. Personally, I have no qualms about adding parents or kids as friends on facebook. The only reasons they're not my "friends" are: (1)my parents don't use the computer and (2) my kids are only toddlers! I did help my mother-in-law set up her facebook account, though. Am proud to be one of her first friends...

We're in the same boat. My parents don't even own a computer and my kids are young too. My hubby would probably never set up a Facebook account for his parents though . . . they already bug him with a zillion questions on using the computer and FB might confuse them even more - ha ha. You are sweet to be proud that your MIL is one of your "friends". And yah, I'll bet some of the teens/young adults wouldn't say what they say on FB if their parents were their "friends"!!

My dad isn't even on Facebook, though he did add an account on Multiply. My nephew was a friend on MySpace, but not on Facebook. Too racy, doesn't want the adults in his life to see it. He's almost 21 anyway, so what the heck.

My aunt just friend requested me . . . I had to sit on it and think if I really wanted her "there". Not that I'm too racy or anything - and not that she could find anything to tattle tale to my parents . . . I just didn't know if I wanted her to be connected to me daily like that (when we barely say hi all year round!).

Of course my mother is my friend on facebook. In fact before my mother had a facebook account I encouraged her to start a facebook account. When she finally did get her account, I was her first friend. It, in our situation, is only natural that we would be friends because we are actually very close friends in our everyday life as well. I have not now and have never really had anything that I wanted to hide from my mother.

Awww - that's so sweet! Sounds like you have an awesome relationship with your mom! And of course, Facebook makes it's easy for you to communicate with everyone all at once with your life updates - including mom - but I'm sure mom gets better details of it in real life - hee hee.

I'd definitely say that she does. It is very rare that the two of us go an entire period of 24 hours without talking to each other at least on the phone and since she only lives five and a half miles away from me, I see her in person at least once a week and sometimes much more than that.

myLot reputation of 100/100. much2say (2730)   ranked 2 out of 4,046 in facebook.com  2 years ago

My parents live very close to us too, but we see them at least once a week and catch up on things then. My mom and I really talk when we see each other as we don't chat on the phone on a daily basis. You and your mom sound like best friends! happy
